If Froome's apparent vulnerability tpday leads to him falling out of the lead, then Geraint will inevitably fall some distance, but even if he does not, and gets 54 more leader points, Nibali and Zakarin (and to a lesser extent Kruijswijk) are maybe looking capable of outscoring him on stage finishes, and while Froome can only lose points for the "sprints" ranking, Leadbelly has riders who could improve there, and improve more easily in the KoM ranking.

Unless someone key has an absolute collapse, I can't really see anyone other than these two challenging for the title, as the next two teams (Archie and Vladimir) have 5 of Leadbelly's 6 big scorers, but both lack Poels or anyone likely to win a breakaway stage; the next team, Los Brolin, is essentially Leadbelly's team with Majka instead of Zakarin, and even his breakaway capacity is not going to give him the two stage wins that would be needed to really put Los Brolin into the equation.

Standings

A downward movement was more more dramatic than any upward ones in this evening's table: BikeRacer has the triple whammy of Lopez, Kelderman and De La Cruz, and falls not only out of the top ten, but also the top twenty.

Foremost among the risers was Bicycle Boy, the other Froome team (Nibali and Kruijswijk have been a less successful supporting cast than Lopez, Kelderman and Poels), and the biggest step forward was Trudgin.

The gap is closed, but tomorrow doesn't seem to have enough to offer Leadbelly to finally close the gap. Neither of our top teams has anyone likely to gain stage points, so Trentin's possible recovery of the Green jersey is the element most likely to change the game. That would see Froome (an therefore Geraint) lose 30 points. But Trentin would also be overhauling Nibali in that category (Nibali having moved into second today), so Leadbelly would lose the game by just seven points (the same as the margin in the Tour game if I remember correctly).

As to the third podium place, the four teams in contention have 1 sprinter each: Vladimir has Lobato, the other three have Schwartzmann. So Brolin and Bicycle Boy seem effectively blocked from the podium by Archie, and Vladimir would need at least a repeat of his second place on stage 4 from Lobato to reach third.

Geraint did indeed hold onto his lead, by an increased margin. Vladimir, by virtue of having Kelderman, mimics his exploit in moving upto fourth at the last, but Archie retains the third podium spot. On a day of very few positional changes, Shalgo moves up three places, and if he does not quite make it into the top ten, he at least forces us to acknowledge a top eleven instead.
