Standings

The Yates teams still dominate, but there has been quite a bit of movement among them. Bminchow remains in the lead, but the losses of Bennett and Dennis bring him much closer to his pursuers, and in particular Rote Laterne, who rises from 4th to a much closer second than we have seen since the race started. Los Brolin had the worst day of the Yatesians, dropping from 2nd to 5th, Bennett and Pinot having hurt his score today. The rest of the top ten remain in their positions, with Kazistuta the highest non-Yatesian to move upwards, and Googolplex the biggest (12 place) riser of the day.

Ciccone's points have been boosted by his rise to 2nd in the KoM standings: those are also the points that Chaves has lost today. Woods has been a particularly volatile pick in terms of his GC position day to day, and the teams that have Aru had probably already realised that he was not going to do much for them, but if they still had hope it has gone now.

Standings

A change in leadership for the first time since the race got to Tel Aviv. Bminchow (who as mentioned above, should recover somewhat through Rohan Dennis on Tuesday) drops to third, now behind Rote Laterne and formerly 4th placed Scrool. Kazistuta and Googolplex (the highest riser of the day, 8 places) get into the top ten, which now seems to be the battle for what would be the podium if it weren't for Yates.

Rest Day

I have unscheduled free time this afternoon, so with no stage to watch, a little calculation of what has been.

Purple points
I identified several stages ago some sprinter heavy teams that might have targetted this aspect of the game, but with the CQ system giving the same points for all types of stages, the small number of stages that sprinters have had to enjoy, and the accumulation of pink jersey wearer points, this is a very different table to the maglia cyclamina. The Yatesians have had the top 6 positions since stage 10, and this is why:

Stage points (and pink jersey wearer points in brackets where relevant) for riders with points equivalent to 2nd place on a stage or higher:

YATES Simon 330 (+180 so 510) 6 teams
BENNETT Sam 255 2 teams

A few there to condemn all of our selection policies

Splitting the Yatesians
For as long as Simon Yates (are we all meant to call him Simon Peter Yates now?) remains invincible, or even if he loses a couple of places, it is hard to see the stranglehold on the top positions of those 6 teams relenting. So what other picks make the difference between them, and how will they gain or lose points from here on? (Asterisk indicates riders unique among these six teams)

Has Yates done enough?
Not whether he has enough to win the race, but given that his guaranteed points are already more than the points for winning the GC, and that his teams have riders that will move up if he were to suddenly withdraw, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see what would happen if he were to fail to emerge on the start ramp for tomorrow's time trial.

And it appears that he has: the top three remain as they are, Nathanptz would move above 2 of the Yatesians, but Yellow Knoght would plummet to 16th. Bicycle Boy, as the only team with Dumoulin, would gain most, but would only rise to 8th.

Stage 16 The Time Trial/motor drafting challenge

Purple points
Time trial specialists, rather like sprinters, are hard to pick in these games: if they are good enough to get many points, they may be too expensive for the few opportunities they get. Some TTers (like err, Aru? Seriously??)are, of course, GC contenders, at least for the top ten, so they may get a look in.

A very steep dropaway after the Dennis teams, but those are of course the teams that may suffer if the climbers behind him on GC claw back time of stages 18-20:

Standings

The long term leader was best on the day: the two that overtook him on Sunday were 2 of the worst 5 on the day. Bminchow is therefore restored to the lead, such is the effect if having Dennis rather than Crapaz and Lopez in a timt trial. But if they regain that time in the mountains to come, then all is still in the balance.
Del1962 becomes the best of the rest, and leads The Pirate81 and Ruvu75 into the top ten, while the best riser of the day, going up 17 places, is Armchair Cyclist, which can only mean that I must be expected to fall back again almost as quickly.

Just about every team has one or two riders who could feature tomorrow, assuming we are to be allowed one stage for the break. Randomly distributed purple points (+ 18 for the Yates teams), and pink points that simply echo that, lie ahead.

Stage 17 Iseo: Not the expected stage for the break, and although it finished as a sprint, I gather not a typical sprint stage either.

Standings
Our leader has all three of Dennis, Bennett and Woods, the three main point losers of the day. The team in second avoids all of them, but has best GC point gainer, Lopez. But that still only removes just over half of the gap between the top two. Nathanptz moves up 2 places to be best of the rest, and Salvarani gets a 10 place boost from Schachmann's win.

Standings
Yates had given his teams such an advantage before today that although they inevitably took the last 6 spots on the day's nett changes, five of the six remain the top five. But Nathanptz has overtaken at least one of them, breaking them up for the first time since stage 10.
Having regained his lead through Dennis on Tuesday, Bminchow lost not only through Yates today, but also through Dennis and Chaves, and although this was mitigated somewhat by Formolo and Bennett, a 500 point loss is not likely to maintain the lead. On the other hand, for Rote Laterne, Carapaz, Lopez, Formolo and Reichenbach did a lot to limit the damage done to his score by Yates and Chaves, and he retakes the lead. Only the fairly similar team of Scrool07 seems to be close enough to challenge. Los Brolin also manages positive movement within the top ten, while Laarsland enters that group, on the back of a 10 place rise matched by Squire: in the more compact group outside the top few teams, there are 13 teams moving up by 5 or more places, which normally only happens after the first mountain stage.

Of riders still going, the only difference between this team and 2nd place Scrool is Chaves and Reighenbach over Brambilla and Bonifazio. So unless Bonifazio sprints to a higher position in Rome than he has managed thus far, the fate of the game seems likely to depend on whether Reichenbach's support for Pinot tomorrow boosts his position further, or amounts to self sacrifice (although the GC time gaps around him suggest that his position might be unlikely to change much). But as today proves, anything could happen.

Standings with, presumably, only the sprinters sorting tomorrow's stage points to go.

A late coup by Scrool07, based on the double whammy of Brambilla's breakaway yielding both stage points and a 4 place GC rise and Reichenbach being placed on nursing duties with Pinot, puts him in the lead at this late stage. He is only one of the teams near the top with any sprinter, so the engraver is poised. Long term leader Bminchow has slumped to 300 points off the pace, yet is still poised to take a podium.

Two of the Yatesians have Pinot: a few days ago that looked like an excellent combination, but in 2 days that has collapsed. They drop to 6th and 10th, and Yellow Knight recovers somewhat from yesterday's 7th to 4th. Nathanptz, suffering with Pinot, is no longer the top non-Yatesian: that honour falls to Kazistuta, and a team founded on the two white jersey contestants. He, Ruvu75 and Carlo Algatrensig all storm the top ten with jumps of 7 or 8 places, but there are no less than five teams that move up by more, Vladimir topping the lot with a 20 place leap.

Tomorrow is about sprinter points. Viviani is unselected, but 2 teams have Sam Bennett (Tigerion and Yellow Knight), Modolo is on 3 teams (including Kazistuta), Danny Van Poppel is in the Collective Wisdom team, with 14 selections (incl Kazistuta and Ruvu) and Bonifazio on 5 teams, including Scrool and Nathanptz).

A 94 pt insult added to injury for the 24 teams with Pinot, before the last stage even starts, is neutral as far as the top 2 are concerned (Brambilla gains 4 pts on GC; Reichenbach gains 2 on GC and Chaves gains 2 in KoM classification), but does bring two new teams into the putative top ten: Amis Velo and Vladimir in place of Nathanptz and Mellow Velo.

Pink points
The withdrawal of Pinot cost his teams 94 points, and other riders pick up a small number of points through moving up or down the GC (those positioned 17th to 51st yesterday) or in the KoM classification. Modolo also moves a couple of places in the points classification. Add that to our sprinters' points, and the gains and losses today are:

And so we get to
Final standings

Bonifazio added a little more gloss to Scrool07's win, but 8 points is still very close. Nobody picked Froome, and the only team with Dumoulin (Bicycle Boy) is very much mid-table. The Simon Yates teams fill the top 4, and also 8th and 14th (those last 2 having lost out on Pinot). Kazistuta, who shares with the top two teams a GC points haul based on the two South American white jersey contenders, is best of the rest, and is followed by Ruvu75, whose first entry into one of the GT games (I think) saw the selection of the team that would be the Collective Wisdom team if I had not compiled that team differently this time around. Amis Velo and Vladimir replace Pinot teams in the top ten at the last moment, and Premier Andrew, Blues in the Bottle, and Koronin share the final mention as the biggest jumpers of the day, each passing 5 teams.

Congratulations to Scrool07, commiserations to Rote Laterne who ran him so close and to Bminchow, who led for so long, and thanks to all who participated, to CQ for the system, to PCS who had results up reasonably quickly and in a consistent and useable format, and to the riders who unwittingly delighted or deflated us.

See you in about 6 weeks for the Tour (and maybe tomorrow for some number crunching).

I'm more surprised I didn't finish last where I had been the entire race until the last couple of days.

More than half the teams had spent more than a third of their budget on Pinot, who lost c350 points in the last 2 days. Some of those were inevitably less than 350 points above you. And you beat 3 non-Pinot teams too.

Better luck in the TdF game: you get a bigger budget for that one.

True although I had some not very good picks in Meintjes, Fernandez and Visconti who I expected more out of. Actually thought Visconti could be good for some stage/mountain points similar with Fernandez but breaks were almost useless in this GT.

At least Lopez did finally end up with something good.

Not sure I'll do much better in the TdF game if I can find a way to put my boy on that team. LOL
