I actually already thought this stage could get tricky for chaves yesterday because this first climb reminded me so much on the Mendelpass in 2016, so I wouldn't be that surprised of this wasn't caused by a crash.
Anyway, how big is the peloton and have they caught the break? Because this stage could definitely still offer some more excitement later on

If they had attacked on that 5% climb, then they wouldn't have gained much time on Froome, if any at all.

Could Yates do a Cancellara and try to bring about a period of neutralisation?

Why are we assuming its 100% a crash anyways?.... Probably is, but could just be legs not responding. As Giggs said, this climb is basically Mendellpass and he needed to get his motor going on that climb.

I'm really not buying all this 'great guy Chaves' stuff. When you're 2nd you make a show of support for the leader, even if everyone knows you don't mean it. He's got no history of working for team mates, but looks like there may be no excuses not to prove me wrong for the next couple of weeks now.
