Giro... three stages in Israel.

Did we travel 2000 years back? :)
Is Israel still under Roman Empire? :D

Wow, thank you so much for the writeup! Great work.

Here are all the stage profiles together on a single web page for quick scrolling: https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/giro-d-italia/2018/stage-5/stages/all-stage-profiles

Stage 11 finish looks like a slightly easier version of the Mur de Huy finish.

Those climb details for stage 15 really help. Definitely promising attacking on the 3rd or 2nd last climbs.

Stage 18 Pratonevoso looks like small gaps, due to the easing gradient and wanting to save legs for the monster stage 19.

What if one of the top 3 has a bad day on the Finestre? Being stage 19. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the podium contenders lose many minutes out of nowhere here.

Bardonecchia or Zoncolan to be the deciding climbs? Or will an attack on a penultimate climb win the Giro instead? The gradients of these two climbs are just too steep for me to think they'll hold hands up every MTF and let the ITT decide things.

I like stage 20's potential for a rolling the dice early attack on Tsecore. But will everyone just be happy with their top 10 finish instead of trying to win? Probably.

Stage 20 starts in Susa. Oldest Alpine town, founded by Gauls centuries before the Roman Republic became an Empire. No clue if its name has anything to do with the Ancient Persian city of Susa.

According to Wikipedia it doesn't. Its ancient name was different (Segusium), and just gradually transformed into Susa in Italian.

Meanwhile, Italy has been hit by bad weather. It's snowing on the Zoncolan and in Sappada. Just to let you know.

Somewhere, high and dry on El Teide, Vincenzo Nibali questions his life's decisions.

Looking at the Sappada stage, it's actually quite annoying how easily they could have improved it, even without added distance or difficulty (well, not much). Just change the start and skip Cortina d'Ampezzo.

The only way going through Cortina d'Ampezzo mid stage isn't a major disappointment is if it's followed by passo Giau and Passo Fedaia (FEDAIAAAAA!!!!!!!!!)

Though honestly, I would've loved if they came into Cortina from the Giau descent and whatever they want to put before that.

Yes, the sadist in me would still like to see Forcella Ciandolada instead of Forcella Cibiana in a race, that climb + Forcella Staulanza before Giau would be awesome.

That said, stage 15 is still the best designed mountain stage in the whole Giro and I really like those climbs.

Looking at the route we see that it favors Dumo. If we agree that he has a good kick in short climbs like a punchy rider plus the two time trials then we see it. The real mountains are too far out and back loaded. Usually a recipe for disaster. Oh well. We can only hope for something good. Yates is in leader Jersey for being one of the best punchy riders and doing an exceptional initial TT for his size.

What a wast of the finestre climb. Nobody is gonna risk it so far out. Maybe good for shedding domestiques.
Like the Glieres at the Tour. Great idea, poor design. Still, it's a toughy.

It's just going to be Nieve/Kreuziger and Haig sending everyone but the contenders backwards until Yates takes over :(

You mean 3 different first-time winners? Surely there were five stages won by first-time GT stage winners: Carapaz, Schachmann and Bennett x3.

How can one be a first time winner more than once?

Exactly. By the time Bennett won stages 12 and 21 he wasn't exactly a first time GT stage winner.
