Rider Popularity

126 riders chosen, and exactly half of them are unique picks

24: VANMARCKE Sep (out of 39 teams, a fairly low take up for a most popular pick)
20: CAPIOT Amaury, DE BIE Sean, ROELANDTS Jürgen, STYBAR Zdenek, TERPSTRA Niki
19: NIZZOLO Giacomo
17: MOSER Moreno, VAN BAARLE Dylan
13: COQUARD Bryan, VANDENBERGH Stijn
12: ENGER Sondre Holst, STANNARD Ian
The eleven most popular picks, plus Stannard but not Enger, make up the Collective Wisdom team. Even with choosing the more expensive of those two joint 12th in the popularity charts, there is still a spare 328 points in that budget.

9: MOSCON Gianni
8: GASPAROTTO Enrico
7: OSS Daniel
6: HALVORSEN Kristoffer, HAUSSLER Heinrich, LANGEVELD Sebastian, VAN AERT Wout, VAN HOOYDONCK Nathan

Big spends

The defining choices for each team. 3000 points for 12 riders averages out at 250 points, so these are the riders costing more than twice that.

In last year's races

If we post last year's results for the 20 races that will make up this game, the results will be:

1 So2017 2057
2 AmisVelo 1575
3 Madrazo 1559
4 Zaka_fan 1445
5 Hakkie 1404

38 Kazistuta 542
39 Josedin 417
CollectiveWisdom 1180

And that table is why the So 2017 team needs explaining.
It came into existence partly because I soon became dis-enamoured of my team (very rapidly collated because Joelsim sent in his squad very early, and largely made by looking at popular picks in the season game and trying to identify those who perform in the classics); partly because I was a bit disappointed that unlike last year no-one had built a team around one of the big names of these events, and such teams are always interesting to track; partly because I had some cancelled work yesterday so I had time to do it; partly because having started compiling the "In last year's races" data, I was intrigued to see how far I could take that; and partly because as game compiler I had the opportunity to cheat and put in a second selection.

So the intention was to calculate the team with the highest possible total score from these races last year. I suspect that there might be a way of getting Excel to work that out for me (PM me if you could explain), but I only looked at those who generated at least 60% of their 2017 points in these 20 races (having checked that it was not possible to make an improvement by including Kwiatkowski or Van Avermaet) omitting those who had retired, joined teams that will give them few of these rides, or are carrying injuries. Within those stipulations, I think this is the highest 2017 score team possible (Hakkie: you are usually good at working out best poss permutations), so I submit it as a mathematical selection rather than my second bite at the cherry.

My team is more or less a So2016  I use exactly the same method to pick my team, I just use the results from 2 years ago. That's how I discovered Baska. I left out Haussler and Rowe though :p

Race 1: Omloop

Maybe not the start to the Classics season that many hoped for, and not a result that many in our game hoped for or expected, but two teams have reason to be very happy with their pick. Popular cheap pick Capiot has already paid back half his cost, and had anyone gone for Wisniowski they would have a rider in profit already, which is a valuable asset in this game.

VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael 1st, 180pts for Blues_in_the_Bottle and Nathanptz
VANMARCKE Sep 3rd, 92pts for 24 teams
GILBERT Philippe 5th, 70pts for So2017
THEUNS Edward 6th, 62pts for Joelsim and NairoQ
VAN LERBERGHE Bert 7th, 54 for Armchair Cyclist and Blues_in_the_Bottle

ROOSEN Timo 18 for 3
CAPIOT Amaury 16 for 20
STYBAR Zdenek 11 for 20
CORT NIELSEN Magnus 8 for 5
and 28 other finishers gaining 5 points each

You'll notice Trudgin sneaking in with a late, asterisked entry, which has 5 unique picks, comes bottom of the popularity table, and can't be said to have sought unfair use of the Omloop result.

All the numbers, and even if I don't publish this link after each race, the spreadsheet file should remain here throughout.

I particularly like the teams of Amis Velo, Leadbelly and Russell23.
I'm interested to see if Benoot or Moscon is the better pick for this game. Benoot seems to be the safer pick as he always scores the same amout of points. Moscon's limit is the sky but it's also possible he can't get off the ground.

Race 2: Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

The best sprinters are usually too expensive for the number of opportunities they get in these races, so there will usually be fewer points on a race that ends up as a large group gallop. Some sprinters are thought durable or adaptable enough to be worth a big spend, so they will get in the frame from time to time. Like an expensive unique pick in 3rd today, the highest placed selected rider.

Today's points
COLBRELLI Sonny 3rd, 72pts for Laarsland and Trudgin*
LIGTHART Pim 4th, 62pts for Salvarani

If he was only riding Ardeche and Drome this weekend, I would've quadroupled down on Valentin Madouas for these competitions this year.

Ardeche and Drome aren't in the game this year, so it would have been a strange criterion to apply. But he does look a canny pick in other games.

Salvarani said:
Also... Le Samyn wont count next week?
I think I see a lot of people that will have one or two riders in the provisional startlist at least. I think it should count :)

I like the race, but it isn't in either.

There are too many 1.1 races that have historically only given tiny points to the game, but still needed a lot of spreadsheet work. I have settled on a rule on participation of 6 WT teams the previous year as the threshhold for races below 1.HC, so we have sometimes had one or two in the game, but with 5 in this weekend's French races, and only 3 in Le Samyn, it seems unlikely that I will include them next year either. Both the wrap-up post at the end of last year's competition, and the OP for this year's, included an invitation to anyone to plead the case of particular events, but there was no persuasion forthcoming.

That's what you get for focusing on a spreadsheet including last year's scores instead of reading the revised rules

I should have included Le Samyn: my unique pick, Gaudin, came in third.

Unlucky that the race is not on the list I am afraid ;)

I'm not sure I can count it as bad luck when it was my decision, but there is some sort of justice in the outcome that, through Gaudin paired with the popular Terpstra, I'm the one who missed out most.

It would have given us:
1 Armchair 135

Race 3: Strade Bianche

There are races in this series, mainly when we get to the Ardennes, that suit riders who get a lot of CQ points in GTs and other stage races: that's at least part of the reason why only 3 of the top ten, and 7 of the first twenty finishers, were selected. We might collectively need other reasons for no-one going for the likes of Power and Serry.

BENOOT Tiesj 1st, 180pts for Armchair Cyclist, Scrool07 and The Art
VAN AERT Wout 3rd, 92pts for 6 teams
STYBAR Zdenek 7th, 54 pts for 20 teams
OSS Daniel 12th, 27 pts for 7 teams
DE TIER Floris 24pts for Chiron
MOSCON Gianni 22pts, 9 teams
AMADOR BIKKAZAKOVA Andrey 14, 1
ANDERSEN Søren Kragh 8, 1
VERMOTE Julien 6, 3
And for five pointers, we have 3 unique picks (GILBERT Philippe, KEISSE Iljo, LUTSENKO Alexey) and our most popular pick, on 24 teams, VANMARCKE Sep.

1 Armchair 234 (Benoot and Stybar)
2 TheArt 202 (Benoot and Moscon)

And now I rue even more the non-counting status of Le Samyn: I would have been top. I'll stop going on about it now.

Tomorrow is the GP Industria & Artigianato, which could potentially giv a fair few points to a small number of teams, but which I am fairly sure will earn any popular picks nothing.

GP Industria & Artigianato (GP Larciano if you prefer)

More of an impact on the game than I expected, in that the highest placed rider who was selected is one of the more popular picks.
Less of an impact than I expected in that only 2 of the top 30 (ie, only 2 riders who get CQ points) were selected.

DE BIE Sean 4th, 62pts for 20 teams
IMPEY Daryl 8th, 36pts for 2 teams

Standings

Pretty straightforward: if you have De Bie or Impey, you moved up, if not, you move down. Only Exceptions to this are the top 4, who all have De Bie, and the bottom team, who doesn't. Pirate81's reward for having both selected riders is a nine place jump and a place in the top ten.

Race 5: Ronde van Drenthe

Most riders were busy in stage races this week, so it was only some of the fringe selections who took points today.

SISR Frantisek 1st, 140 points for So 2017
GERTS Floris 7th, 42pts for Comodoro, Madrazo and Nathanptz
VERMELTFOORT Coen 11th, 22pts for Josedin
LIGTHART Pim 12th, 18pts for Salvarani
CAPIOT Amaury 13th, 15pts for 20 teams
WARLOP Jordi 11pts, 3 teams
DE BACKER Bert 7 1
ALLEGAERT Piet 5 2
DEHAES Kenny 5 1

Today suggests that maybe there is something to be learned from who scored a large proportion of their points in these races last year:

1 So2017 145 (Sisr and Allegaert)
2= Nathanptz, Comodoro 57 (Gerts and Capiot)

The top three hold their places, although the lead has been reduced from 69 points to just 12, but just behind them Laarsland, Russell23 and The Art each move up one at the expense of Capiot-less DFA123. Comodoro manages a 7 place rise to appear in the top ten, and So 2017 overtakes half the field to sit mid-table.

I'll be sat in front of the spreadsheet quite a lot over the next week: Nokere Koerse on Wednesday, Handzame on Friday, then the first of the really big scoring races, Milan-San Remo on Saturday and back to minor points for GP de Denain on Sunday.

Race 6: Danilith Nokere Koerse

JAKOBSEN Fabio 1st, 140pts for Josedin
CAPIOT Amaury 2nd, 84pts for 20 teams
DE BIE Sean 8th, 36 for 20 teams
BASSO Leonardo 11th, 22 for DJW
VLIEGEN Loïc 18pts forAmis Velo and Salvarani
COQUARD Bryan 15pts 13 teams
NAESEN Lawrence 11 2
GERTS Floris 9 3
DE BACKER Bert 6 1
BIERMANS Jenthe 5 4
ROWE Luke 5 2
VAN KEIRSBULCK Guillaume 5 4

15 teams combine Capiot and De Bie for 120 pts, so not a great surprise that some of those overhaul Josedin's unique, but unsupported, pick of the winner.

Standings
Previous leader, Blues in the Bottle, lacks Capiot, which has caused him to drop to 3rd, and Mellow Velo is the only new entrant to the top ten (and only just). Farther down, the table is more volatile: Josedin gets a 10 place rise from his unique winning pick, but that is only the 5th best climb of the day, Kazistuta's 17 places being the best.
