They should be able to close that if they work well. 20km is a long way, and they could even give the leaders 15 seconds going into the final climb and still beat them (like Cancellara did a couple of years ago).
They don't have 20 kilometers though. At least Sagan won't want to arrive in Siena in a big group, so he has to attack, at latest at the last sterrato section which is over 10 k out

All of Bora, Sky and Movistar are to blame, though I agree that most fall on Bora.

Van Aert is probably the best in the field when it comes to climbing in cyclocross. So I think he can handle this on the road as well.

And cyclocross climbs are steep, punchy and muddy as hell.
