Rather then have one giant long thread it should be easier with a stage by stage thread - if Mods think otherwise then just delete this -

2019 Critérium du Dauphiné stage 1 Aurillac - Jussac 142 km
start 11.00 CET, TV from 13.30 CET

At 142 kilometres, the 1st stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné takes in five climbs. So the race gets the climbing underway from the get-go. The hardest ascent is crested at kilometre 34 before continuing onto more lumpy terrain. The last summit lies 18 kilometres before the finish in Jussac.

Departure place Aurillac is located in the southwest tip of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, a place where the Critérium du Dauphiné never ventured before. The route includes a series of demanding climbs, starting with the Pas de Peyrol (Puy Mary), an ascension of 10.6 kilometres at 6.1%. The pass is tackled at kilometre 34 and following a toil at the highest road pass in the Massif Central the riders reach the peak at an elevation of 1,598 metres. Quite an impressive climb to start with.

The race continues to the Côte de Besse (2.6 kilometres at 5.2%) and the Côte de Saint-Cernin (4.8 kilometres at 4.3%) before tackling a lumpy local circuit through the hills around Jussac. The riders face a double ascent up Côte de la Route des Crêtes. The 3.6 kilometres slope comes with an average gradient of 7%. The summit is 18 kilometres from the finishing line.

Re: 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné stage 1 Aurillac - Jussac 142

Thanks for posting - I much prefer individual stage threads.

This is a pretty hard stage to predict - could be early break, late attack or sprint. I'll go with the latter and say Bennett, whose form seems very strong and Bora should be strong enough to pull it back for him.

A lot of talk around for Magnus Cort Neilsen it seems.

6 man break - 50% Danish - Oliver Naesen (AG2R-La Mondiale), Magnus Cort (Astana), Niklas Eg (Trek-Segafredo), Fabien Doubey (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Casper Pedersen (Sunweb), Julien Vermote (Dimension Data) - nearly 3 mins lead after 20 km. Bora leading the peloton.

That makes a certain amount of sense, but they will really have to go nuts on the last climb if they are going to get rid of faster men. It has not been a hard day.

Here's the question: Was Cort told before the start not to go into the breakaway? Coz if he was, then we know how this is going to end.

It’s going to be tough to catch them. Bora working alone again and there’s a lot of firepower up front. The climb may even help the break - after all Bora can’t ride it so hard they put Bennett in trouble and the gap won’t close much on the descent either.

A different situation now with DQS on the front. Bad news for the break. Not sure if they are working for Hodeg Or Alaphilippe.

Down to four men in front. We will find out who DQS are riding for very soon as they hit the climb. If they continue to hammer it, presumably Alaphilippe is their man.

What was that? An attempt to get rid of the sprinters for Alaphilippe?

Until he had to realize that only Ineos have the right to set the tempo at French races.

Is there anyone from Bora left in that peloton?
Great tactics!

Now Ineos smothering the race, just because it's summer. Old habits.

Don't know why Lambrecht made that move. I doubt that this group will stay ahead. Did he just want the mountain points?
Yes, probably just for the dots, and it's fair to continue.
He's rolling well.

With a decimated peloton they are not gonna be easy to catch. If Bennett is back in the peloton they might be caught, not sure otherwise

Edit: who are MS working for?
