Stage 5
A bit of a damp squib, and a very damp squib at that. The early time taking probably contributed to the almost total lack of GC position change, so points for the stage are the main element today, along with pink jersey points and some shuffling of the points classification.

The top two share 5 of their riders; it is O'Connor, Clarke and Orsini for Mellow Velo against Gastauer, Poljanski and Garioso for BikeRacer33.

Tomorrow should see a number of riders who don't really belong in the GC top 30 drop down, so we might begin to get a better idea of how those cheaper "He might get a few GC points" type picks are going to contribute.

Stage 6

L'Aquila-esque on the eve of L'Aquila.

12 teams still not off the mark in this one.

Standings
In a few days, we might return to something like the table was yesterday, but for now, it is very different. Shalgo is the only one of the top ten this morning who had 2 of today's positive riders (Carboni and Amador), and goes from 6th to top. The only others who retain a top ten place are Leadbelly (through Antunes), and Nathanptz, Rote Laterne and Los Brolin (all courtesy of Amador). The top 5 this morning were the bottom 5 in today's scores, and now find themselves in the 11th to 18th range.

Vladimir goes from 22nd to second. Of the new entrants in the top ten, three have jumped more than 30 places. A 33 place rise is not enough to give Carlo Algatrensig the climber laurels, nor is 34 places for ArchieBoy: it is Triley who gets that honour, moving 35 places.

Standings

Yesterday's top two had a good margin by virtue of having Carboni in second place: he has fallen to third, but that does not diminish their margin much. Vladimir has the men second and third across the line today, so that puts him in the lead. ArchieBoy, Triley and Carlo Algatrensig all move the right direction in the top ten, and Tobydawq takes a ten place jump.

Yay!!!!! Finally a good day. Well at least for one day my very unique team paid off. Nice to actually get some of the purplish points and get my name on that board. Doubt it will be there by the end, but I'll take what I can get. I shall happily take a day win and call it a great Giro.

On a day of low scores, the top two were never going to be threatened, but in the congested area below, any team with Evans is likely to have moved up, including Triley36, Total Package and Carlo Algatrensig into 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively, and Del1962, Mellow Velo and BikeRacer33 into the top ten. Standings
The ten Roglic & Nibali teams once again occupy the top ten places, but in a rather different order than before the stage 6 breakaway.
Because of Carboni, Shalgo was already the best placed of the Roglic teams, so no surprise that he regains the lead. The next three places are taken by Amador teams, the top three on the day scores, each with a 10 place rise. There are three more teams re-entering the top ten, but it is just outside that that we find the biggest riser on this stage: Nibali-less Roglic team Squire with a 20 place jump.

The next two stages should see a swing in favour of the Ewan teams, although there are some other sprinters not mentioned here that might get decent returns, and after that it is really about how far the interlopers (Carboni, Antunes, Amador and Masnada) might fall: Amador has top tenned in the Giro twice before. And in what order the contenders for a high place arise.

When Conti slips from Pink, as he surely must, the top 11 will extend their margin over the rest by 125 points (plus 18 a day) if Roglic takes over: should Nibali get into position for his third Giro win, we are (apologies, Squire and Otoxiep) pretty much as we stand.

And although it is no longer the "official" secondary competition, the guaranteed points standings (so that you know what your score is if all your riders decide that they enjoyed the rest day so much that they take the next two weeks off as well) are:

Stage 10

No selected rider in the top three on the day, no-one getting the pink jersey points, no change in GC position among those who get more than the 15 finisher points, no Mountain classification points on offer, just a handful of stage points and a slight reshuffle in the lower half of the Ciclamino top ten. The effects of today's stage on tomorrow's start line might change the game more than the stage itself did.

At least the points won in this classification are just as many as they are in a TT or a major mountain stage. Scrool07 moves up to 2nd, Flo is up 4 to 4th, and Premier Andrew had a jump of 8 places. Because we are abut halfway through, and because I had intended putting it in the rest day update but forgot, here is the full table so that some can see just how badly they are doing.

It would be nice to think that this was a uniquely bland stage, but have you seen tomorrow's stage profile?

Stage 11

Slightly more impact than yesterday: Ewan got a better result, the withdrawal of Moschetti means there is some GC point change, and slightly more movement in the points classification. But not a lot.

Standings

The drop away of the stage 6 breakaway men topples Shalgo from top spot. Although their main characteristic to distinguish thenm from the other Roglic teams was a DNF this morning, BikeRacer and Mellow Velo have been left enough credit by Ewan to fill the top two slots, with Los Brolin, courtesy of unique pick Montaguti, taking third. Del1962 enters the top ten, infiltrating the stronghold of Roglic teams, largely through rare pick Majka, while daily winner Torcia is the rocket of the day, up 13 places.

Standings

A totally different game. Teams with Roglic and Nibali have filled the top ten most days: now the only Roglic team in the top 9 is Squire, the only one without Nibali.

That huge daily winning score brings Fauniera from 17th to first, Del in second is the only one from yesterday's top ten to move up (8 places), and Torcia, now 3rd, was 23rd this morning (and 36th yesterday morning). But 20 places is not enough to secure best jump of the day plaudits again: Salvarani is up 23 spots.

All but one of Fauniera's team has (for now, at least) more than 100 points. What are the odds on Miguel Florez winning the stage tomorrow and getting enough KoM points to make the top 4 in that ranking, to complete his set?

Even if that doesn't happen, I suspect big changes are on the cards again for tomorrow.

Standings

Of the 5 Carapaz teams, Scrool07 was by far the highest placed yesterday: 3rd as against 24th, 26th, 28th and 37th. But he had Zakarin, so moved up just one spot, as opposed to the average 25 places (max 30 for Josedin) of the others. So Archieboy takes the lead, despite having been nearly 300 points adrift yesterday.

Stage 15 Giro d'Italombaordia

An interesting enough stage, with potentially important time differences but few major positional changes, and only minor stage points for selected riders, so not many game points.

Standings

Much quieter in terms of change here, but the significant change is that Josedin has moved up two places, meaning that the five teams with Carapaz are now an unbroken group at the top of the table. BikeRacer333 manages the Zubeldian feat of being the biggest riser (4 places) while getting a nett day score of 0 and an anonymous joint 15th in the daily scores.

Non finishers

When we pick a rider we probably at least hope that they will finish the race. At least that way we get 15 points for them. How many riders does each team have already enjoying more than one rest day?

The top five teams are the five who have Carapaz (and obviously share Nibali as a pick as well), and if the Ecuadorian stays in pink, the should remain the top five.
There are only 3 points between Archieboy and Torcia, and they have three other riders in common: Landa, O'Connor and Senni. So it is essentially Masnada, Sivakov and Cimolai (for Archie) against Formolo, Zakarin and Ventoso for Torcia.
60 odd points does not look an enormous margin for Scrool07 to retrieve, but he also has both O'Connor and Landa, and with Ewan and Modolo out, and limited opportunities for Cimolai (who ArchieBoy has anyway), it would take a result from Narvaez that he has not indicated as likely yet to bring him any improvement. The possibility of success through other riders dropping remains for him.
Tobydawq also has Landa (it is the lack of dorsal number 1 that leaves Josedin so far behind the other Carapazinos) but needs Kangert and De La Parte to start improving rapidly if he is to make up the deficit on the top three.

Even if Roglic were to climb back to the race lead, leaving Carapaz second, that of itself would not be enough to put the teams based on the Slovenian back at the top, especially if, as seems the most likely place for that to happen, that occurs on the final TT after 5 more days of 18 point bonuses. And of course Nibali overtaking either or both of them would not have much nett effect on our scores. There are higher scoring permutations than those based on Roglic, as found by Del1962 (with Majka, Landa, Evans and Zakarin) and Fauniera (Landa, Evans, Zakarin, Ciccone and Sivakov).

But the last week will be horrible for at least one rider out there, and someone will do better than expected. And the same should happen in the game.
