I know I shouldnt complain but this was a really underwhelming stage. Nothing much happened except the sprint at the end which had just 3 guys battling.
No good MTF till Stage 14(?). Bummer.

We should complain.

7 road stages in, nothing has *** happened apart from one of the main favorites crashing out.

Yeah, I underestimated a whole peloton coming in in top form with lots of motivation. You need some harder stages than this to create good racing early on in a GC. But lets be happy the Giro starts proper tomorrow with an incredibly interesting TT.

We should complain about other stages, but I think this is the best example of necessary sprinter stages. We got lucky that it delivered the three best sprinters in style, but it was well designed to add some tension instead of a pan flat day. The two stages after the rest day for example: tear apart the design and backload.

Good win for Ewan - Ackermann did n't have the legs and Viviani too far back. Ciccone got a bit agitated there but otherwise everyone came through unscathed.

Onto the TT!

Did not look like a technically difficult descent, what was the fuss about?
Think it was related to potential bad weather, but yeah, some of the riders like to complain over everything.

There really is very little between the top sprinters. Ackermann looked like the fastest during his first win. Ewan was simply faster than him in a fair drag race today.

One thing we do seem to be learning is that Demare isn’t one of those top sprinters. He’s not competitive with these guys.

Demare needs a harder race, anyway Ewan did well as he was isolated in the final due to all the work his team did.

Demare is a fine hard course sprinter, that’s not in doubt. But he is still generally viewed as a bunch sprinter too. And he just isn’t cutting the mustard at that role.

I think even the descent from Vista Chinesa would look easy if Capecchi was leading a peloton down it at a measured pace like today.

Regarding Démare: He has not got a single victory so far this year. That must be truly horrible for him. Today was all about positioning, though, and I actually think having Guarnieri in front of him was a liability today as he made him be even further back than he would have been if he had surfed wheels himself. And when he went through the curve outside the top 7 positions he just had no chance.

I also think that the reason Ewan was much faster than the others today was the late turn. That meant they had to launch their sprints from a very low pace and with his light weight he is always going to have the best acceleration under such circumstances. I'm kicking myself for not having predicted that and put him as my captain for my fantasy team.

I think that a MTF was necessary for the first week: it would have been an other story to this hilly/tricky stages. In this way no one take risks, everyone is close in the GC.

Too far back? He was absolutely perfectly placed. He was right on Ewan's wheel and couldn't make up an inch. Ewan was simply much faster
