Technically, there was one and the same race for elite and U23 riders. As per race regulations, in case when an U23 rider wins, he is the winner of both: the entire race and the U23 subcompetition. He is also the only one to wear national champion jersey. Elite riders are classified separately (separate elite subcompetition), but in case if an U23 rider wins the overall, the winner of elite subcompetition is not granted with a separate elite national champion jersey.

So, to sum up:

- Fouche is the overall race winner and winner of the U23 subcompetition, and he is entitled to wear the Silver Fern throughout the season;
- Scully is third in the race and winner of elite subcompetition, unfortunately for him without the right to wear the national champion jersey.

Good questions. Not sure what the reason for is, but these are the race rules:

NATIONAL TITLE AND JERSEYS AT ELITE/U23 ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP If the race is combined Elite/U23, the results go to the UCI as one race, with the placegetters getting UCI points allocated based on race finish position. There is only one NZ National Champion, the winner of the combined Race. If an Elite rider wins the combined race, they will be awarded the NZ National Champions jersey, and the first placed U23 is awarded a NZ U23 Champion Jersey, which they may wear at U23 only events. If a U23 rider wins the combined race, they will be awarded the NZ National Champions jersey. The first placed Elite rider does NOT receive a Jersey.

I would see it more reasonable if there would be two separate jerseys, one for elite and another one for U23.

In Hungary last year, Barnabas Peak came in third, with 2 U23 riders ahead of him. Peak nevertheless was declared national champion, with jersey-wearing rights. The strange thing is that he is younger than the two guys that beat him: I guess it is simply a matter of what entry fee one paid.

The justification presumably in saying that Scully won the senior title is that he beat the riders against whom he was in competition: those challenging for the U23 title were of no more interest to him than the Slovakian riders in a breakaway would be to a contender for the Czech championship in that shared race. Although if he had realised that, unlike Peak, he wouldn't get jersey rights, he might have thought differently.

Well, if the guy who crossed the line first was the winner of the Elite race no matter what - and possibly also the winner of the U23 race, if young enough - then surely he'd also have been thinking differently.

It seems like there isn't an Elite sub-competition based on the rules, that's just how it's being reported. There is only an U23 sub-competition and it's only awarded when an U23 rider doesn't win the whole thing.

He gets the points for whatever position he finished overall, that's it.

Fouche wears the jersey in every road race, U23 or Elite.

I guess that technically he wears the U23 jersey in U23 races, and the senior jersey in senior races, but they are probably one and the same.

Unless Team WIGGINS has a really smart jersey sponsor who designs to separate jerseys just to show off.

Dennis' time was in-line with his previous performances from the last three years - Fastest time 50.59, 51.13 and 51.14 - He rode 51.22 today - So the time by Durbridge would have defeated Dennis on two occasions.
