2019 Vuelta CQ Game

It only occurred to me today that the race is a week away, so a little later than intended, but here we go:

Your team
You need to name 8 riders who will be on the startline for the Vuelta, and who have a total CQ value for the 12 months to 18th August (the Sunday before the start) of 3500 or less. Those prices are as reported in the CQ download published on 19th August.
If you pick a rider who is not on the final startlist, or your team is overbudget, I will replace him (the non-entrant or the cheapest one who can be replaced and bring you back into budget) with the most expensive replacement that will keep you in budget (this is a change from previous versions, but it shouldn't happen anyway).

There is a spreadsheet available on Dropbox that will help you get your 8 men within budget, and arrange it for submission.

Entering the game
Send your team to me by PM on either Velorooms or Cycling News forums. If you do not have sufficient posts to your name at CN, then you will find no such restriction at Velorooms.
Please send your riders' names only (not the price, not their team, preferably not even a following space) in CQ format (Surname then forename, some care needed with Spanish/South American, Danish, Eritrean and Portuguese riders). If you use the spreadsheet, that will be easy.
Entries must be sent in before the race starts, which I believe is 18:56 local time on 24th August (Yeah: I thought it looked like an odd time too). If you don't wait until the last moment, I will have a better chance of warning you if there is a problem with the team. However, please do not send in your teams until the riders' prices are confirmed.

The game
Your riders will get points for stage positions (70 for the winner, down to 1 for 10th), for starting a stage in the red jersey (18 points) and for their standings in the points and mountains categories with points given on the same scale, and GC standing (ranging from 500 for the leader to 16 for 50th, and 15 for everyone else). Those standings points can obviously increase or decrease, and gradually become a closer indication of what the final scores will be as the race goes on.
I will update daily, allowing you to become very optimistic until your top performers eventually drop away and/or withdraw from the race.

There is a secondary competition, which, after some discussion during the Tour, will be based on stage points only (not even red jersey bonuses). I'll be referring to this as the green points competition.

Enjoy the game, and good luck to your team.

Oops: thanks for the heads up. I will attend to that straight away.

Right: sorted. I had posted the scores 01/01/19 to 11/08/19, instead of 11/08/18 to 11/08/19. (I had copied from the Emerging Riders Game rather than going back to the original). I thought the prices were a bit low. My draft has been wiped out to start again.

However, even with that correction, these scores are a guide to rough price, pending the update for the year to 18/08 which I keep checking CQ for. In the meantime, prices are available at CQ or on Search's excellent table at Velorooms

All of the riders considered to have any chance of winning La Vuelta have been picked at least twice. One manager retracted Carapaz as soon as there was the possibility of him being injured, one reacted soon after his withdrawal was announced, and one is still pondering how to build a team without him.

You still have 130 chances to select a unique pick, or maybe you will put all three of the riders already in at least three quarters of the teams into your squad.

CQ did finally post the update, and although they have dated it as the year to 18th August, they have deleted for KOCH and BERNAS the points from races that took place on 21 Aug 2018. Those points therefore should be in the year to 18th August, and I will stick with the prices as posted at Velorooms (linked above) by Search, and that have been in the Dropbox team selector tool throughout.

However, in the case of GEBREIGZABHIER, although Search is quite right in saying that on 18th August the site reported his score as 189, the update this evening reports 204, and all the results would conform that. 189 would make sense on the basis of the score given in the 11 August update: my guess is that the good folks at CQ only picked up on his Eritrean national time trial championship win in April in the last week: that would account for the other 15 points.

GEBREIGZABHIER is on one team, but that manager had more than 15 points to spare in his budget, so the teams as they exist at the moment are not affected by this price rise. His price will therefore be 204, and I have amended Search's list and the selection tool at Dropbox accordingly.

A couple of people have reported having trouble finding the PM function on the new message board. Tap on my username (or merely hover over it on a laptop/PC), and select "Start Conversation".

Don't worry if you are using cut&paste and the names appear in boxes (like this list has, unexpectedly): that does not hinder me pasting it into the spreadsheet.

OK, so two teams that I have downloaded this morning have included Gebregzabhier at his "old" price (before CQ discovered the results of the Eritrean national TT results from June) and are therefore a few points over budget.

So do I:
A) apply the new prices, and replace their cheapest selection with a rider a few points cheaper ("The change in his price was announced in the thread, and the price lists changed, more than 24 hours before they submitted their teams"); or
B) allow them to run a few points over ("It was an inadvertent mistake, based on treating the information source they were given in good faith")

I know which way I am inclined to vote, but I get these sudden notions of democracy from time to time.

Two hours to decide the fate of your opponents!

*** (nine names submitted: I have omitted the cheapest, but if the manager wants to omit another and bring Latour in, I'll allow it up to tomorrow's)

Some observations:
Rote Laterne, hot from victory in the Tour game, is the only one to have gone with the big two of Lopez and Roglic.
Many teams have not bothered at all with a big name (or even a small name) sprinter, but Yellow Knight has both Bennett and Gaviria.
Googolplex seems to have his eyes on the initial lead, with hopes, I presume, for Tony Martin as the first red jersey.
Hakkie may have prioritised national pride over realistic chance in the game.

Riders

61 seems like a lower than usual number of the field to have represented, but that is probably because a few mid-price riders were very popular.

How many teams selected each rider

30 teams: CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban, LATOUR Pierre
26: ARU Fabio
20: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
12:GEOGHEGAN HART Tao, NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel
9: ROGLIC Primoz
8: BAUHAUS Phil, MEINTJES Louis, PADUN Mark
7: BARTA William, BENNETT Sam, MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe, SOLER GIMENEZ Marc

The bolded riders make up the Collective Wisdom team. Roglic would have put it way over budget, and taking two of the men on 8 teams would be very much under budget, so I have lifted Bennett from the group below to make a very plausible spend of 3486.

6: GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando, HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres
5: QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander, RODRIGUEZ GARAICOECHEA Oscar
4: ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin, GEBREIGZABHIER Amanuel Werkilul, MAJKA Rafal
3: BICO Nuno Miguel Alves Matos, KRUIJSWIJK Steven, O'CONNOR Ben, PARDILLA BELLON Sergio, URAN URAN Rigoberto
2: BOASSON HAGEN Edvald, DE LA PARTE GONZALEZ Victor, FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar, GESINK Robert, HOFSTEDE Lennard, KELDERMAN Wilco, KNOX James, MARCZYNSKI Tomasz, MEZGEC Luka, POELS Wout, POGACAR Tadej, SAMITIER SAMITIER Sergio, VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro

Hakkie's Dutchmen are not very popular on any other team: 4 unique picks there. Koronin has 3 and Scrool 2.

Very unusual for me to be so high in the popularity rankings: my team was lodged with Search early in the week though, lest anyone be suspicious.

The GC rankings at the moment are fairly irrelevant (although Lopez topping them might be noteworthy), but that's what gets added in at this stage to make the very early standings, along with the 18 points Lopez has for being Red Jersey wearer.
No sprint or climbing points included yet, they will begin to appear tomorrow.

It'll be some time before this tells us much: all it does so far is to show which 20 managers are getting 535 points (and probably a few days' worth of 18 point bonuses to come) from MA Lopez.

That's interesting. I'm higher than typical on the popularity chart with only 3 unique picks. Be interesting to see what happens. It's la Vuelta, Valverde is as good of a pick as a sprinter as any actual sprinter is. :)

Thanks for the updates. Always interesting to see everyone's teams.

And just shoot me. Right where I belong in last place. And no sprinters. Serves me right for twice changing my line up. I'm all in on Padun and O'Connor for the stage wins now. or maybe Roglic will be so pissed he wins the rest of the stages.
