2020 Classics CQ Game Redux

Back when this year appeared to be like any other, 33 of us entered the Spring Classics CQ Game.

We chose teams of 12 riders, (maximum total 2019 CQ score of 3000) to score points in 24 European 1.Pro and 1.WT races in the Spring.

But after 4 races, the world went mad, and there were no more races. I declared Vladimir the winner, and have no intention of depriving him of that title. But all the effort that we put into picking our teams yielded precious little sport, so let's have another go.

The goals of some riders, and the balance of skills that will gain points, have changed, so I will allow you to change up to 6 of your team, but the total budget (still based on year to 31/12/19 CQ scores) remains the same. We will all have had the benefit (if it is a benefit) of seeing other people's selections, but deciding whether it is good to be guided by that remains your judgement.

Scores already gained (from Omloop, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, Faun-Ardeche and Drome) are retained: ditching, or taking on, riders who scored in those races will not affect your score. But of the remaining 17 races listed for that game, several have abandoned any thought of re-scheduling for this year (GP Industria & Artigianato, Nokere Koerse, GP Denain, Koksijde Classic, GP Indurain, Tro-Bro Léon, Eschborn Frankfurt and Dwars door Vlaanderen), and that leaves us with gaps in the spreadsheet, and the freedom to choose outside the Spring period.

So I will be replacing those 8 races with Il Lombardia, Bretagne- Ouest France, GP Quebec, GP Montreal, World Championships Road Race, Milan-Torino, Paris-Tours and Dwars door het Hageland (ie, the WT one day races that were not at the right time of year, the WCRR, two of my favourite 1.Pro races and the one that seems to be the most spring classic-like).

If you don't submit any changes, I'll enter your team as it is anyway, so if you entered in February, you can't escape. And if you didn't enter in February, I will allow a new entry, but you obviously don't get the points some people have already banked from early in the season, and also have a reduced budget (10% lower, 2700 2019 points) to make up for your selection not being at least half those you fancied the chances of 5 months ago (and as a punishment for your disloyalty to the game back then).

Teams to me by the start of Strade Bianche on 1 August by PM please, either here or at Velorooms: as ever, just the name (no prices, no team names) and in CQ format (Surname Forename and watch out for how CQ treats Spanish Portuguese and Danish names, among others) if at all possible.

I'll need to do a bit of alteration to the spreadsheet, so I'll do that tomorrow and then get back here with a clearer formatted list of the races and anything else that I may have missed. Until then, have a think about how that changed list of races, and objectives of the riders, might make you want to alter your team. Here is the original spreadsheet: that will show you your original picks (and everyone else's) and gives (on the Price tab) a list of 2019 prices and the CQ versions of names.

So since I announced the redux game, two of the new list ( the Canadian races) have been cancelled. So I will replace them with 2 more 1.Pro events (Eurometropole and Wallonie), but from here on, anything cancelled just means one event fewer here.

So the races for the Redux Classics game are:
Omloop
Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne
Faun-Ardeche
Drome
Those have already been run, and your team points for those are locked in, regardless of what team changes you might make.

1 Aug Strade Bianche (180 pts for winner, 108 2nd, 92 3rd, 5 for finishing)
5 Aug Milan Torino (130, 78, 66: top 30 score)
8 Aug Milan San Remo (280, 170, 145, 5 to finish)
15 Aug Dwars door het Hageland (as Milan-Torino)
15 Aug Lombardia (as Milan- San Remo)
25 Aug Bretagne Ouest France (220, 132, 112, 5 to finish)
12 Sept Eurometropole (as Milan Torino)
16 Sept GP de Wallonie (as Milan Torino)
27 Sept World Championship RR (400, 240, 210, 10 to finish)
30 Sept Fleche Wallonne (as Ouest France)
4 Oct Liege-Bastogne-Liege (as Milan San Remo)
7 Oct Brabantse Pijl (as Milan Torino)
10 Oct Amstel Gold (as Ouest France)
11 Oct Gent- Wevelgem (as Ouest France)
11 Oct Paris Tours (as Milan Torino)
14 Oct Scheldeprijs (as Milan Torino)
18 Oct Ronde van Vlaanderen (as Milan San Remo)
21 Oct Dreidaagse De Panne (as Strade Bianche)
25 Oct Paris-Roubaix (as Milan San Remo)

The high points yield of the WCRR considering the different profile of riders who might shine there compared to most of the list might make for some interesting selection decisions.

I guess I need to start reading some of these statements on who intends doing what races. Let me know if there are any questions, otherwise I will simply sit back and await your transfers in and out (or indeed, new entries).

A few more hours this evening, and a few tomorrow morning, if you want to make any alterations to the team you sent in in February, or if you want to come in as a new entry.

Only three managers have made any alterations so far, including me. Time is running short for the rest of you.

No-one came in as a new, penalised, entry, and only 4 teams made any changes:

Standings

Today's race scored almost as many as the 4 earlier ones, therefore there is only a passing similarity between this and the pre-lockdown standings. The only real consistency (apart from BitB in last) is the virtual lead of the Collective Wisdom team. The top three were 8th, 9th and 17th before this race, but Otoxiep's jump is beaten by Rote Laterne and Comodoro, each moving up 18 spots.

Only 4 people made changes? Wow. Maybe they are just not paying attention. It is really hard to know who will start in what race. Armchair out in Froome. I may need to go look at the list of races again. This seems like a sneaky play.:)

Yeah, I was very surprised to see myself do that. But I had been keen to get rid of Moscon, and took fear at how long Dillier would be exiled with his Covid diagnosis. So I brought in a couple of climbier guys (we now have Lombardia, the Aigle Worlds, Namur finishing Wallonie and Milan-Torino until I realised too late that Superga had been excised) and had about 84 points left. So I reckoned if he can make any sort of appearance in the Worlds, or if he finally cracks the top 30 in LBL, then he wouldn't be bad value in this one.

Maybe there is something calming in doing this, takes my mind of what we all just saw in Poland. Hope it doesn't feel disrespectful or trite.

Race 6 Milan-Torino but not the Milano-Torino we normally see.

Race 7: Milan-San Remo

Sometimes the biggest races score low in this game, because the main protagonists prove too expensive to fit into a team. Not this time, for the winner if no-one else in the top 12, and WvA looks like he might be an essential for any team to get anywhere in the game.

VAN AERT Wout 1st, 280pts for 14 teams
VAN DER POEL Mathieu 13th, 42 pts 9 teams
NAESEN Oliver 14th, 38 for Salvarani
KWIATKOWSKI Michal 15th, 34 6

BETTIOL Alberto 18th, 28 4
STYBAR Zdenek 19th, 26 8

In an unlikely development, I seem to have both top scored today and moved up to the top of the tabel. I'm sure normal service will be resumed soon. Bminchow has also moved up onto the podium, and Comodoro and Salvarani move up within the top ten. Scrool07 and Blackbandit222 share the honourable mention for having moved forward most (3 places).

And with WvA having taken 526 points since the three races since the relaunch and the opportunity to change your team (the lowest team that chose him is a head of the highest that did not), Search may be permitted to kick himself for having dropped him in favour of Schachmann.

Two races next Saturday, Lombardia and Hageland: until then, numbers galore

Two races today, the minor one of which has finished first:
Race 8: Dwars door het Hageland

Included to retain some of the minor cobbled category that some riders may have been selected for.

Hakkie and Northerner both have the winner (130 points), Jonas Rickaert, and 2nd placed Eekhoff (78 pts) is on 7 teams (Blues in the Bottle, Bminchow, Del1962, Josedin, Laarsland, Leadbelly and Los Brolin)
Also Senechal (4th, 58 for 4 teams) Merlier (5th, 52, 3), Van der Hoorn (11th, 20, 3) Van Gestel (12th, 18, 1) and 4 5 pointers (21st -30th), including popular bargain Sean de Bie.

Race 9: Il Lombardia

The bigger of today's races, but a smaller contribution to the game's points total than Hageland. In the same way, I suppose, as we choose riders such that the Ardennes races tend to yield fewer points than the cobbles.

Bretagne Ouest (GP Plouay) next up, on Tuesday week, by which time I should be sorting the first entries for the Tour de France game.

Rickaert only cost 23 points for those 130 that he earned today, and Eekhoff also turns a profit. De Bie breaks even, but for a cost of 5 points, that is a minor achievement.

And that should have been Laarsland and Hakkie that moved up 7 places in Hageland, not Search and Leadbelly. I'll blame that on my mind being on Evenepoel's condition as I typed it.

Is it really not until the sep 30 until the next race (after tomorrow)? Assuming no Worlds RR?

Race 10 Bretagne Classic Ouest France

Michael Matthews was probably a bit too expensive to pick, unless he gets a few other results, but Luka Mezgec in this race would have created a decent return had anyone gone for him. Instead, the point scoring riders today that we did pick are:
SENECHAL Florian 3rd, 112pts for 4 teams
SIMMONS Quinn 6th, 76pts for 21
EEKHOFF Nils 7th, 66, 7
GARCIA CORTINA Ivan 10th, 46 for Comodoro and Kazistuta
HAAS Nathan 19th, 17 1
THWAITES Scott 23rd, 13 2
VANMARCKE Sep 28th, 8 7
and another 17 scoring 5 each for reaching the finish line.

1= Laarsland (Senechal, Eekhoff and 2 fives), Vladimir(Senechal and Simmons 188 (65 green points each)
3 LosBrolin 147 (Simmons, Eekhoff and a fiver) (35)
4= Bminchow, Josedin 142 (Simmons and Eekhoff) (20)
6 Kazistuta 130 (Simmons, Garcia, Vanmarcke) (10)
7 MellowVelo 129 (Senechal and Haas) (5)

Green points
The two teams who shared top scores today are modestly placed in the main competition, but both appear on the podium in the minor award.

1 Josedin 155.38
2 Laarsland 154.59
3 Vladimir 150.5
4 Comodoro 130
4 Search 130
6 Northerner 128
7 Armchair 126
8 Bminchow 125.09
9 Otoxiep87 120.38
10 JustSomeGuy 98.56

Standings
Of those who were in the top ten after the last race, only the top two got anything other than Simmons (the most popular pick in the game) and one or two fivers, and they matched each other exactly, so the gap between them is the same, and their margin over the rest of the field increases. Tobydawq came 10th on the day and moves up to 10th overall, but Madrazo makes a more impressive burst into the ten, up 5 places to a share of 6th. But not quite the jump of the day: Koronin moves up 6 (to 6th from bottom)

The next two events (Eurometropole and GP de Wallonie) have been cancelled, and the one after that is uncertain at best (the World Championships). So I'm not sure now long these numbers remain the status quo. From my point of view, I guess it saves me trying to do updates on this during the Tour de France, because I'll be busy each evening during that with updates of that game, so don't forget to get your entry in on that one: the thread will be near this somewhere.

Race 11 World Championship (it would have been race 13, but we lost Eurometropole and GP Wallonie

This is on a bigger scale of points than any of the other races. But that is mitigated by no-one choosing the winner. But here are those that we did pick:

VAN AERT Wout 2nd 240 points for 14 teams
HIRSCHI Marc 3rd 210pts for Joelsim
KWIATKOWSKI Michal 4th 180 6 teams
SCHACHMANN Maximilian 9th 96 for Search
GESCHKE Simon 17th 30 2
BETTIOL Alberto 18th 27 4
and only 4 of the 58 riders who finished outside the top 30, which is a shame as they are worth twice as many points here as in a WT race (10 points)

1 Armchair 420 (Van Aert and Kwiatkowski) 80 green points

And by then, you might have looked into your Giro team.

Nice job Armchair. Bumping me down one. Looks like Alaphilippe will not grace us with his presence on wednesday, so someone else has a shot.

Race 12 Fleche Wallonne

The balance of teams is usually heavily weighted towards the cobbles, and away from the hillier classics. Usually, that means scoring tails off, but this year it may mean a late boost for some teams.

But those who we did pick:

HIRSCHI Marc 1st 220pts for Joelsim
MARTIN Daniel 5th, 86 for Kazistuta
KWIATKOWSKI Michal 6th 76pts 6 teams
GESCHKE Simon 10th 46 2 teams
VANENDERT Jelle 12th 35 3
BAGIOLI Andrea 19th 17 3
GASPAROTTO Enrico 30th 6 3
and another 19 riders (including Quinn Simmons, the most popular pick in the game) who were among the 143 finishers, each getting 5 points.

1 Joelsim 230 (Hirschi and 2 fives) 80 green points
2 Search 132 (Kwiatkowski, Geschke and 2 fives) 50

Search seems to either do very well in a race (his has been the top team on one race and the second three times) or has a very mediocre showing (he has never been 3rd to 10th), but that is what the green jersey is meant to celebrate. Hakkie peeps into the ten.

Of the top ten scorers in this race, only one (Armchair) was higher than 15th overall. I get to celebrate that with a step up from 2nd to the top. No other positive changes in the top ten, and Joelsim and Hakkie each manage to rise 5 places.

Liege-Bastogne-Liege (usually the last event in this game) is on Sunday, but don't forget to get your Giro game teams to me before that.

Names and numbers

Blast. I've just realised that due to CQ's odd way of dealing with Michael Valgren's change of surname (they don't put the pre-marriage surname of women in brackets!) I did not give credit to Del1962, Hakkie, Rote Laterne, Tobydawq and Vladimir credit for his 11th place (64 points) in the World Championship.

That makes the World Championship race the biggest contributor of points to the game.

Race 13 Liege-Bastogne-Liege and a crazy finish.

As usual, the Ardennes doesn't see too many high scorers: these guys usually get too many points in their price from races that are not part of the classics series to be thought a good investment in the game.
