2020 TdF CQ Game

Well, the dates are different, but everything else is pretty much the same.

You need to pick a team of 8 riders taking part in the Tour, who have a total cost on CQ current rankings (on download to be dated 23 August, presumably available from afternoon of 24th) not exceeding 4000 points. Your success (or otherwise) is measured by the CQ points gained by the riders in the Tour.

You can find rider prices, the points scoring system, and a selector tool, here. There is also a secondary game (the Green points classification) based on your riders' daily positions, regardless of GC and other classifications.

Send your entries in CQ format (Surname, then forename: Danish, Portuguese, Eritrean and Spanish-language names can be difficult, please help me out by looking for the rider on CQranking.com and giving their version of the name, or use the selection tool) by PM on CyclingNews or Velorooms before the race starts at 2pm (French time) on 29th August. However, please do not try to enter before the appropriate scores are fixed on Monday evening: scores in the selection tool are only an indication until then (and will change due to Nationals and Wallonie/Emilia).

Non-starters or being over budget will be resolved by subbing in the next most expensive from the same team if possible, or next most expensive in the field if not. If you don't leave it to the last minute, I will be able to alert you and let you know the substitution that would happen.

Good luck, and enjoy the game. Any questions, PM me or ask in this thread.

Prices are not as low as you might imagine (or hope). What I think CQ have done for their current rankings is to include not only all results in the last 12 months (as per usual), but also results from 2019 races that had their 2020 equivalent rescheduled by the time it was due to start. (Their explanation:"If on the day of the (postponed) race - or the last day of a stage race - the new date has NOT been announced, the points scored in the previous year will be subtracted in our rankings. If the new date has been published, these points will be retained until the new race date."
So to look at Rui Costa, as an example, his score (download of 16 August) is 500 points:
326 from races in 2020, so nothing unusual
80 from the World Championships (less than a year ago, 2020 version not yet held, same as any other year)
71 from the Canadian GPs (cancelled this year, but still less than a year ago)
23 from last year's Tour de France (more than a year ago, but it was rescheduled before the anniversary date)
His score does not include points from the 2019 Milan-Torino (less than a year ago, but 2020 edition already held), nor his points from earlier than 22/08/19 (except the Tour) That means that his Tirreno Adriatico and BrabantsePijl/Fleche/AmstelGR points from last year are not in his current price (the 2020 versions have not yet been held, but as of the date the 2020 versions were to take place, they had not yet been rescheduled).

So in short, 2019 points for the Tour and the Giro (and a few other races probably) are still in there although they were more than a year ago, but riders who would probably have gained points in the spring classics or stage races like Romandie/Suisse/Catalunia/Basque Country/Tirreno-Adriatico are cheaper this year than they would be most years.

I did not understand anything but "prices are not as low as you might imagine". Okay. Got that.
I was predicting that people were expecting prices to be only CQ points gained in the last 12 months. But that's not the case: 2019 Giro and Tour de France points are still part of a rider's current CQ ranking. In terms of playing the game, you don't really need to know why each rider's cost is what it is, just work with it.

But considering the prices are lower than usual, I'm expecting some good scores in this edition.

A bit less than 48 hours to go, and with 13 teams in, 43 riders have been chosen, and two of them are way ahead in popularity, while 20 are unique picks.

Four different riders costing more than twice the average 500 pts/man have been selected.

Don't forget to send your selection in.

And as they roll away from Nice, here we go:

30 teams (listed alphabetically), 62 riders selected (listed by price in their teams), 19 unique picks (indicated here by an asterisk)

Rider Popularity
When 3 managers were able to ignore the hype around Remco Evenepoel for the edition of the Emerging Riders game for which he was eligible I should have admitted to myself that 100% selection of a rider in a CQ game would never happen. But Tom Dumoulin available here at 139 points, it seemed likely.

No.

28 teams (out of 30): DUMOULIN Tom
26: PINOT Thibaut
16: BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley
12: BUCHMANN Emanuel
7: BARDET Romain, BOL Cees, KÄMNA Lennard, URAN URAN Rigoberto, VAN GARDEREN Tejay
(The Collective Wisdom team will be the 4 riders on a dozen or more teams, plus 80% of the total of the five men selected seven times, it is quite a long way under budget at 3842)
6: LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel, ROLLAND Pierre
5: COQUARD Bryan, ELISSONDE Kenny
4: BENNETT Sam, DE GENDT Thomas, HERMANS Ben, MARTIN Daniel, MARTINEZ POVEDA Daniel Felipe, ROGLIC Primoz
3: GIBBONS Ryan, KUSS Sepp, LATOUR Pierre, MEZGEC Luka, NIZZOLO Giacomo, POZZOVIVO Domenico, REZA Kévin, SAGAN Peter, SIVAKOV Pavel, VAN AERT Wout

Maybe ArchieBoy and Josedin will let us know why they thought Pierre Rolland and Alessandro De Marchi respectively were likely to score more than Dumoulin.

A couple more things I should add before I start getting on with today's stage result:

If anything unscheduled happens that would affect scoring, I will avoid ever having to make a decision by following the point allocation of CQRankings.com.

I might not post the link to the spreadsheet in every evening's updates, but it should be synchronised on Google Drive, and be available here throughout.

Stage 1

Green points

I'm not sure that we have any new managers this time around, but in case we have, or anyone has forgotten, these are the stage points for the first 10 finishers in each stage, distributed 80, 50, 35, 25, 15, 10, 5, 3, 2, 1.

Main game

There are far more points available than the stage points of the green competition, Most importantly, the GC rankings, but also 20 points for wearing the yellow jersey (apart from after stage 21) and points for the KoM and Sprints classifications. So had anyone picked Kristoff, he would give them 80 for today's stage, 20 for being leader (these 100 points would be certain, whereas those that follow can, and for Kristoff surely will, reduce) 600 for top place in GC, and 80 for top in the points classification)

These rankings are therefore about as secure as Kristoff's grasp on the race lead, but we have to start somewhere.

No-one else scored. A change in the minor classification after discussion before the Vuelta last year means that the two Alaphilippe teams don't get the 20 points for leading the GC table (in this classification, they still get them in the main game).

Standings
SafeBet and Josedin don't only share Alaphilippe, but also Coquard, so they had the same points yesterday and are still not separated in this competition.

Main game

Most of the points are projected points: in previous years I have described that as 'if the Tour were to finish here', but in 2020 that seems unsubtle. But because they are projections they become closer to reality the nearer we get to the end of the race, and scores can go down as well as up (So had anyone picked Kristoff, he had 780 points yesterday (80 for stage win, 20 Yellow jersey points, 600 for top of GC and 80 for top of green jersey), today he has 200 (he can't lose the stage winner and yellow jersey wearer points, even if he doesn't finish the Tour, but his 600 race leader points have dropped to 20 for being 129th on GC, and he still has the lead in the sprints classification, but will probably lose some placings in that over the next three weeks) and so his points difference on the day is -580. And if individual riders can get negative daily scores, so can a team.

The main points changes, as they affect riders selected for our teams:
ALAPHILIPPE Julian 695 2 teams
HIRSCHI Marc 416 2 teams
CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban 235 2 teams
POGACAR Tadej 205 2 teams
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley 174 16 teams

SAGAN Peter -255 3 teams
BENNETT Sam -300 4 teams

No real correspondence to yesterday's table: the top two have both risen 17 places and Scrool 19.
That looks like an enormous, as if unsurmountable, lead already: how realistic it is, like the GC tables in last year's tour, depends on the durability of Alaphilippe's tenure of yellow.

Yours was one of the teams that looked like it had been put together with an eye on the green points category, so a sprint stage is likely to bring you to the fore.
To be honest it was put together in five minues without much thought at all. I only knew that I wanted Dumo, Pinot and Sagan. Haven't even checked how many points Sagan got from his other years compared to someone who finished high on the GC...
