That might not have looked like a very exciting stage, but it has caused some huge changes of position. SafeBet remains top (and I suspect will do for as long as Alaphilippe is in yellow) but Salvarani has risen 6 places to 2nd, while Bicycle Boy, Blues in the Bottle and Amis Velo have each jumped 17 places, and Del 21, to get into the top ten.

I wouldn't expect much change tomorrow.

I probably don't wholly understand the game but shouldn't the owners of Alaphilippe be awarded the points for holding the jersey?
You do get the 20 yellow jersey points in the main game, but after discussion last year, those points were removed from the Green Jersey competition.

So you currently have 1491 points:
108 stage points (95 for a win and a 5th for Alaphilippe; 5 for Bernal for 7th today; 5 for Coquard for 8th and 9th, and 3 for Pinot for 8th today: these are your Green points);
60 for three x 20 point yellow jersey bonus for Alaphilippe;
1315 for projected GC positions (600 for Alaphilippe in 1st, 260 for Bernal in 6th, 230 for Dumoulin in 7th, 110 for Pinot in 14th, 55 for Latour in 27th, and 20 each of your other three riiders who are outside of the top 50);
8 for the points classification (Alaphilippe is 7th for 5 points and Coquard 8th for 3);
and you have no riders in the top ten, and so no points, in the KoM classification.

108+60+1315+8+0=1491

And all the numbers are in the spreadsheet.

And I'm not sure that tomorrow will see much more change.

The ratio behind picking Alaphilippe was him getting the jersey early and then keeping it for as long as possible because of the defensive racing.
He got it early and the racing is ultra defensive but he managed to lose it in the oddest way possible.

Yeah, the tactic of choosing the rider who will get the leader's jersey early and rack up those bonus points for many days is a tempting one, but you were one of those who was bitten by Roglic being willing to let Conti take it over easily after 5 stages in last year's Giro.

I'm not sure that was what Alaphilippe was doing here, but it is clear that riders need to be spoken to about their moral responsibilities to those who select them in these games.

Stage 7

And I'm not sure that tomorrow will see much more change.
Shows what I know, important splits from the start, and echelons.

After Alaphilippe's bottle, Pogacar's puncture becomes the second cause of a dramatic fall from top spot. It is, we discover today, possible for the same team to make a huge jump to 3rd place in the green competition and drop several places to last on the same day.

Comodoro moves into pole from second, and Del rises from 5th to 2nd. Northerner completes the podium with a 5 place rise, matched by one entry to the top ten, Leadbelly, and beaten by the other one, Rote Laterne.

It would be nice if at least some of us can improve our score tomorrow.

Apologies: I composed this at Velorooms last night, and forgot to copy it here:

Stage 9 Second Pyrenean day, third great day's racing in a row.

Now that the two main pre-race favourites are in the top two spots, the two teams who doubled up on them are in the top two here. But after the way the last three days have been raced, I think we have plenty more to happen over the next 2 weeks, in the game and on the road.

Collective_Wisdom 1330 (Bernal, Buchmann and 80% of Bol, Bardet and Uran)

Some observations:
Van Aert is very impressive in the race, but the three teams that chose him here are in the bottom five.
Dumoulin was almost ubiquitous, and although he has moved from option B to last mountain dom, he is still getting a good return on the low cost, and the teams that lack him are among the bottom 5.
Pinot was almost as popular as Dumoulin, but a lot more expensive and underachieving: not going for him if it was in the interests of being able to afford both Bernal and Roglic was a wise move (at this stage), otherwise those who eschewed him did not invest any better (Sagan, Martinez, Nizzolo...)
Comodoro's lowest scoring rider is 64 pointer Pinot
Of the riders who have withdrawn, Cras was on one team (Otoxiep87), Degenkolb and Aru on two each (Armchair and Shalgo, Googolplex and TRiley) and Nizzolo, by far the most expensive DNF on three (ChrisDK, DJSprtsch and Laarsland). I haven't removed Pozzovivo's projected points yet, as he will only become a DNS at the start of stage 10, but those who suffer will be Laarsland (again), Mellow Velo and Pirate81.
Jumbo-Visma, the only team that are overbudget, have a cumulative score of 1257, AG2R are 2nd with 730, Ineos have 728, followed by Cofidis (625) and Trek (575).

And if there are any other numbers to investigate, they are here.

Standings

The relevant (so far) difference in composition between the top two (they both have both Bernal and Roglic) is the Blues in the Bottle has Bryan Coquard, while only Hermans has gained additional stage points for BicycleBoy: that means the gap widens today.
Search moves onto the virtual podium, Shalgo overtakes a couple of top ten teams, Googolplex appears in the top ten and shares the biggest rise with SafeBet.
