Standings

The race, and game, are at a mature stage when no team moves by more than one place up or down. The value of place riders can be seen by the fact that BicycleBoy has both Roglic and Bernal while Search, who has neither of them, is only 5 points behind him.

I think I'll have some time for number crunching tomorrow.

I'm more than happy to take a top 5 for the day. About time my rare picks are starting to pay off. Maybe I'll be lucky and that will continue. Dumoulin, Mas, and Valverde look to all finally be finding some form, even if Dumoulin is working for Roglic. Also Kuss is showing he's still strong, even though he is also working for Roglic. From what I can tell from comments from Mas and Valverde they are working together.

Which means that despite Roglic holding the big score for projected GC win, and 180 yellow jersey points so far, the 4 teams that have him are provisionally 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. If the (presumed) winner is very expensive, then he does not necessary win you the game unless the rest of the budget is well spent, without expensive let downs. AV has Pinot and Buchmann, Del has Pinot and Bardet, and BitB and BB both have Bernal. More balanced teams are better than all in for yellow, it would appear.

Stage 17 Queen stage: more impact on the time differences than the positions, except in the case of Colombians.

Standings

(Changes are since the end of yesterday's stage, not from the interim morning table)

Amis Velo moves onto the podium and is now the top Roglic team. Search is now top of both tables, so will have to decide which jersey to wear tomorrow. Scrool07 is a late claimant of a top ten place.

For once, your insistence on selecting Valverde, while he has not been great value for 1160 points, has been to your benefit, as it prevented you spending 1304 on Bernal.

There is something to that. Even if he ends up in 11th instead of 10 depends on how the TT goes, 11th is still better than a DNF. Actually if I wouldn't have been determined to take Valverde and just insisting to myself his consistency has to show up eventually I'd have been more likely to pick Sagan or Viviani or Trentin than Bernal. What's even worse in that none of the riders in that price range have been exactly a good value to the cost.

The top three teams should be able to expect a final bonus of 20 each for Roglic's collection of fluffy lions tomorrow, and if he is as high as most expect in the stage, they should be beyond the difference that Search might be able to make up from Bennett on Sunday. But Uran has a very good chance of overtaking Yates for 30 points in the time trial, which brings Search back into contention.

Other than Roglic, the top three also share Dumoulin (of course) and Van Garderen (!)

Those that make the differences between the teams are
Amis Velo
PINOT Thibaut
HERMANS Ben
BUCHMANN Emanuel
GIBBONS Ryan
BOL Cees

Blues in the Bottle
(BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley)
COQUARD Bryan
JUNGELS Bob
NIV Guy
REZA Kévin

Del1962
PINOT Thibaut
(BARDET Romain)
MARTIN Daniel
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald
ELISSONDE Kenny

So they all have some potential for minor points on Sunday, but nothing to pick between them tomorrow, I suspect.

Stage 20

This morning, the two teams with Pogacar were 5th and 6th, just one point apart, but seemed likely to be overhauled by the last remaining Roglic team below them and any difference between them would be of negligible importance.

And then that happened.

Green points

Standings

Salvarani jumps 4 places today, but his only sprinter for tomorrow is Bol, who is most unlikely to make up the 39 points he lacks, and even if he did, Bol is also on Archie's team (as are Mezgec, Van Aert and Bol). However, If Bennett is in the first two on the Champs, then the way is open for Search (or Laarsland, if Bennett wins and Mezgec is in the top four) to make a late challenge.

Standings

An eleventh hour shake-up of what had looked almost settled, and we are left with a two horse race. The two Pogacar teams would have each moved up four places, except that Enric Mas gained a place from Lopez' disastrous TT, and that puts JSG in pole position rather than one behind. As if to make up for Valverde falling out of the top ten, Koronin appears in it.

Apart from Pogacar and Dumoulin, the top two both share Pinot and De Gendt.

So the determining factor tomorrow will be the comparative performances of these quartets:

Just Some Guy:
BUCHMANN Emanuel
COQUARD Bryan
GIBBONS Ryan
MAS NICOLAU Enric

Salvarani:
BOL Cees
MARTIN Daniel
MARTIN Guillaume
ROLLAND Pierre

So in essence, it is down to whether Bol can outscore Coquard tomorrow. Van Aert and Ewan are poised to push Coquard down the Green jersey positions if they finish ahead of him, so it could be very tight. If Sam Bennett gets the sort of result that is expected of him tomorrow, then Search should find himself on the podium.

The numbers so far

And those average scores for each forum: Velorooms 1095, Cycling News 1081.

OK, this gets complicated, but stay with me.

Coquard is currently credited with 25 points in the game for holding 4th place in the green jersey competition. He cannot improve on that position, but could lose places, and he loses 10 points if one of them passes him, and 15 if both of them do. Bol is not going to get any points in this game for the green classification.

So Just Some Guy's advantage might be 20, 10 or 5 points.

A win for Bol (stop laughing) would guarantee victory for Salvarani.

These are all written as what Coquard would need to get to keep JSG in the lead
If the margin is 20:
Bol 2nd, Coq would need 3rd
CB 3rd, BC needs 5th, which would make a tie
CB 4th, BC 7th to make a tie
and if Coquard retains those 20 points, there is nothing Cees Bol can do for Salvarani if he can't make the top 4.

If the margin is 10:
Bol 2nd, Salvarani wins (unless Coquard wins the stage)
Bol 3rd/4th/5th, Coquard needs 4th/5th/6th for a tie
Bol 6th, BC outside the top ten is a tie
Bol 7th or lower, JSG is the champion

If the margin is 5

Bol in the top 4, Coquard would need to finish ahead of him
Bol 5th/6th, Coquard one place behind him would make a tie
Bol 7th, a tie unless Coquard is in the top ten
Bol lower than 7th is no use for Salvarani.

If none of the relevant riders get points at the mid-race sprint, then Coquard's margin over Van Aert and Ewan is 13 and 15 points respectively: In that situation, the following paragraph applies.

If van Aert or Ewan win, Coquard can't prevent them overtaking him, but he can hold either of them finishing second off by being in the top 4. To stay ahead of Van Aert in 3rd/4th/5th/6th, Coquard needs 9th/11th/13th/15th. If Ewan is 3rd 4th or 5th, Coquard needs 11th/13/15th to stay ahead of him.

But if any of these three get points at the intermediate sprint, I'll have 5 laps left of the Champs to recalculate.

And this being 2020, it may be that something else affects the scores.

Just for fun I checked Coquards placings in the Paris sprint... that he has been a part of:

2014: 7th
2015: 2nd
2016: 168th (crashed or hindered)

It was awhile now though since he has been here.

Cees Bol has never contested the Paris sprint. Could the lack of experience in the finale play a roll? 3rd, 7th, 2nd and 8th so far in this Tour.

Coquard. 8th, 9th, 7th, 3rd, 7th and 4th so far in this Tour.

Kristoff and Boasson Hagen usually does well here. Could the slightly uphill be something that can suit Bol too? Im just making a wish, that it could be the case.

It will be exciting to see how this game ends either way :)

Much to my relief, the intermediate sprint has made no difference to the game calculations. So the finishing positions (in the paragraph beginning "If Van Aert or Ewan win") hold good as the thing that determines how many points Salvarani is behind. I don't need to do any more Maths until it is over.
