I think MvdP is the kind of rider who when he feels good just tries to go off and looks what happens. I doubt there's much more thought behind it, and I don't mean that as a criticism.

I agree. But to Valverde: He was just dropped a minute before we saw him in full screen. There was a full shot at the peloton and three Movistar riders where trying to get contact again.
