This was a course for strong bike handlers with punchy power. Yates won a TT in Paris-Nice a few years ago with similar characteristics.

TBF we need to see what Yates is doing on the long climbs to make pronouncements on his form. In the Vuelta a Asturias he crushed everybody on the 2-3km climbs which this finale was similar to (but easier than, as El Violeo and Carabanzo are very steep) but had a complete pajará on Acebo.

However, the fact that you don't know which version of him will turn up on any given day is what makes him compelling. Having him and Supermán in the same race is good for unpredictability.

On Acebo he also got dropped within the first kilometers to be fair. I think it was just an off day for him, which he has more often. But on his good days he is also great on the longer climbs.

Sure - I mean, he's won the Vuelta and was my pick for KOM in the 2019 Tour before the annulments and abbreviations took a couple of HC climbs off the menu when he was in super form. He's a super climber when in form, but form is evanescent and variable, and Simon Yates' form is more evanescent and variable than most.

True, I also wouldn’t be surprise to see him collapse somewhere. But the chances of it happening in a hilly stage are similar to it happening in a stage like Blockhaus for me.
