According to Wiggins Yates is now the clear favourite to win the Giro. I don't agree with that. This Giro will be decided in the mountain stages in the third week, not in the time trials. Carapaz is still the favourite to me. Yates however has shown today that he's ready to challenge Carapaz.
Muffled gasps and thrashing sounds were heard from behind the closed door at Kirby's office earlier.

I think he is calling Yates the clear favorite now because a topshape Yates is also one of the best climbers in the world. Probably better than Carapaz even. And his argument is that a Yates who is winning TTs might be in his best shape ever.

That being said I also think we all know how fast that shape can disappear with Yates. But if he manages to keep this form for three weeks than Carapaz needs to be worried.

Yes, but there's also uncertainty about Foss. He crashed out of Coppi e Bartali before we got to see how well he was going at the time, and then he's been focusing on training since (some of it has been at altitude).

Like Logic says, he might do better than Dumoulin, but I doubt he can finish on the podium.

Yes, that's what I meant with come good, because he didn't have the best of year himself. Today he did better than I expected because of it, so I thought maybe it was not that bad and, to be fair, we haven't seen enough of him to know how good he can be in GT.

Yates does not have the best team with him. I think he could be quite easily isolated later on.
But it is better than what he has had with him in recent years. Hamilton, Sobrero, Howson is not bad. But he should try to give the pink to less important riders through breakaways in the first two weeks probably.

I think they will have a hard time. We will see.

The key rider is Hamilton who has been awful since he got ill in the 2021 Tour De Suisse - Hamilton showed some form in the Basque Country before he crashed out - It's interesting that Hamilton did not attend the Altitude camp or rode Asturias, yet Yates wanted him at the Giro.

Almeida sometimes gets off to an undercooked start in GTs. Today's performance wasn't a disaster.

He did start better in the previous 2 Giros but since the start of this season he's been doing worse on iTT.
His itt results are a little bit underwhelming this year.
I'm starting to think that he is focusing in improving his body for the high mountains stages which may impact his itt capabilities. I also read somewhere in Portuguese media that his preparation for this Giro was aiming for him to reach peak form in the 3rd week. I guess that we will see next Tuesday where his form stands atm.

Hmm. Maybe because he knows Hamilton could potentially be the best dom he has, if Hamilton finds his best level.

On the other hand looking at their squad... who else could they have brought? Kangert? Schultz? Thats pretty much where it stops.

So gambling on bringing Hamilton hoping he has a good race might have been the best choice either way.

If it comes down to Yates vs Carapaz, I'm afraid Ineos will only need one killer dom to force Yates to do a Pogacar's JV hitchhiking without being a Pogacar. And I don't think it will even take Ineos to do that to this BEX squad.
I hope Hamilton prove me wrong though.

I think UAE TT bike is just not as good as the other big teams. It's why Mcnulty, Bjerg never really get top TT results like you'd expect. Pogi to good for it to influence him.
