Yes, that's what I meant with come good, because he didn't have the best of year himself. Today he did better than I expected because of it, so I thought maybe it was not that bad and, to be fair, we haven't seen enough of him to know how good he can be in GT.

But we also last year that he struggled a bit in the mountains. Maybe he could have lost a little less time if they had backed him fully from the start instead of Bennett, but he was still far behind Carthy on the climbs. He also disappointed me a little in the final time trial, so perhaps his recovery over three weeks isn't the best either. We'll know more about his future potential at the end the race.

Funnily enough the obvious comparison for this performance by Yates is his 2nd place in the opening TT of the 2019 Giro, a Giro in which he proceeded to be garbage. It's almost funny. A guy performs way better than expected in a time trial and I feel like this tells me absolutely nothing.

I think they will have a hard time. We will see.

Well I am not saying they have the best team. Far from it. But an in form Hamilton is a very good rider, who should be able to be there with the last 15-20 riders. Howson and Sobrero with the best 30-40. If they have to carry the burden of pink the whole race fatigue will catch up to them probably, but otherwise I think Yates has a decent team.

Also, the question is if teams manage to isolate Yates, which team mates will be there that Yates has to respond to in the final week? Will there be riders other than the team captains still in contention, or is it leader against leader.

So for now, in the event that Yates proves to be the best, I don’t necessarily think that his team will form a problem.

We will just have to agree to disagree.

Almeida sometimes gets off to an undercooked start in GTs. Today's performance wasn't a disaster.
Completely predictable. Riders who leave Lefevere think they will perform better.... The reverse is usually true.

At Lefevere they may be in a tight system. But they were well surrounded and the group atmosphere did the rest. With their new team they often have to perform as a leader or reserve leader, or as the only sprinter. The pressure is therefore great, too great often. Especially because riders like Almeida and Bennett are not absolute top riders. Something both apparently thought. Last season, Almeida was obviously thinking he would be a better version of Evenepoel. Forgetting that Evenepoel was coming back from terrible injurys (and also underperforming because of errors of judgment - Evenepoel coming to soon back to the Giro 2021).

I think he is calling Yates the clear favorite now because a topshape Yates is also one of the best climbers in the world. Probably better than Carapaz even. And his argument is that a Yates who is winning TTs might be in his best shape ever.

That being said I also think we all know how fast that shape can disappear with Yates. But if he manages to keep this form for three weeks than Carapaz needs to be worried.
I think he is calling Yates the clear favourite because he likes flag waving, is expected to keep the less committed interested, and because he is a halfwit who usually says the first thing that comes into his head without really thinking about it. He said today's stage would be a nine minute effort.

I think there are good reasons for thinking that Yates might win the Giro, I just don't trust those to be at the heart of Wiggins' reasoning.

I think we all known that Yates is potential one of the best GC-contenders and a topclimber. BUT... in stageraces, not only but specially in 3-weeks grand tours, he can seldom avoid one or several weak days. That often gave him the advantage that after a breakdown he no longer played in the classification. Which gave him free rein to attack in one or more mountain stages afterwards. For Yates it is to be hoped that his breakdown does not occur too late in the Giro. Otherwise he could miss out on overall win as well as wins in mountain stages.

Congratulations to Simon Philip Yates for winning ITT.

Was a rather dramatic ITT today. Dumoulin was disappointed but i wouldn't be that hard on myself. Still he did a great TT. Favorites are close and this will likely end up being a nice Giro edition. Was fun to watch that interview with a bunny.

Before the Giro started Carapaz was the big favorite on paper for me. Yates was close second. As PN performance was just too special to not be taken into the account. Team support is what Yates might miss the most.

I think Yates will take pink on the Etna and keep it for two weeks. Then he'll lose it in one of the final mountain stages.

Yates will likely try to revenge his brother. The brother that was taken and is now riding for Ineos. Likely doing that for a much better paycheck.

Still it's now or never.
