2022 Vuelta CQ Game

Page 2 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Had to check over at cyclingarchives. There's been two, Laurent Devalle and Albert Vigna. Vigna took the start in the TdF in 1926, but probably was a bit of a chancer & didn't know exactly what he signed up for. Ended 4 hours and 49 minuts down on the first stage and DNF'd on the second. Devalle actually finished two TdF's, also in the 1920's.

The teams

We have 34 of them (which is about average in these games). Most of the old hands are here, but Kazistuta and Josedin, 4th and 5th in the Four Seasons challenge, haven't sent in a team thus forfeiting those positions, and we have a couple of newbies in BR2 and Pman, so welcome to them.

Some team adjustments as riders who were expected to ride have dropped out of the listings, with Blues in the Bottle being thus forced to change his team about 5 times; I'm willing to give DJW a bit more time to see if he has a replacement for Penalver other than the default of Jose Diaz.

So with that proviso, here are the teams:

Riders
There should be 184 riders, but due to covid and tramodol there are only 182. 79 of them are in our selections, and of those 35 are unique picks indicated above with an asterisk.

The rest, with the number of teams selecting them, are:
22 teams:LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel
19: CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio
15: CARTHY Hugh
13: VAN WILDER Ilan
12: O'CONNOR Ben
11: ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves
10: KELDERMAN Wilco
7: BENNETT Sam, FROOME Chris, HINDLEY Jai, YATES Simon
6: GEOGHEGAN HART Tao
5: ARENSMAN Thymen, CARRETERO MILLAN Hector, LANDA MEANA Mikel, MAS NICOLAU Enric, SWEENY Harrison
4: AYUSO PESQUERA Juan, CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban, FABBRO Matteo, LANGELLOTTI Victor, MALECKI Kamil, SIVAKOV Pavel, STEWART Jake
3: DE GENDT Thomas, DIAZ GALLEGO Jose Manuel, HAMILTON Lucas, IMPEY Daryl, KUSS Sepp, PETERS Nans, SOLER GIMENEZ Marc, URAN URAN Rigoberto
2: BRENNER Marco, BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago, DENNIS Rohan, EINHORN Itamar, FERNANDEZ ANDUJAR Ruben, GROVES Kaden, HIGUITA GARCIA Sergio Andres, ITURRIA SEGUROLA Mikel, MCLAY Daniel, ROGLIC Primoz, VINE Jay, WRIGHT Fred

Those marked with an asterisk are the Collective Wisdom team. It actually comes in quite a lot below budget at 3037, but even by averaging out a few riders, including Almeida, Hindley or Yates would have put that team well over the allowance.

Major picks
The riders on each team that cost 700 points or more:
Roglic: DJSprtsch, Yellow Knight

Evenepoel with Almeida: Evans is the Best

Hayter with Carapaz: Bicycle Boy

Alaphilippe: Redhead Dane

Higuita with Carapaz: Zigzag Wanderer
with Yates: Search

Hindley with Almeida: Armchair Cyclist
with Carapaz: Los Brolin, Pman, Rote Laterne
with Yates: Rufs
Archie Boy, Northerner

Almeida with Carapaz and Yates: 18-Valve, Blues in the Bottle
with Carapaz and Mas: Salvarani
with Carapaz: Amis Velo, Comodoro, Scrooll07
BR2, Del 1962, Jumbo Visma Fan

Carapaz with Yates: Madrazo, TRiley36
with Mas: Bonimenier, DJW, Mellow Velo, Otoxiep 87
Laarsland, Leadbelly

Yates: Vladimir

Titan31 has a much more egalitarian team, with O'Connor (642) as his most expensive pick.

I haven't got time to do a team similarity chart, and once there is other results data in the spreadsheet it becomes almost impossible, so we'll have to forego that one this time around.

Stage 1 TTT
No-one has Dennis, and the CQ points for TTTs are a bit odd, so can't say who has made the best start, but Yellow Knight, who is I believe the only manager with two JV riders, will probably be up there. To follow...

Stage 1: TTT in Utrecht

CQ Points for a team time trial are a quarter of the stage position points, but rounded down (rather than rounded to the nearest whole number), and only to those who finish with their team group. So Peter Serry, who finished ahead of anyone from Bike Exxchange, gets 0 while the BEX contingent each get 3.

I was wrong about Yellow Knight being top with 2 JVs: Archie has a JV, 2 Ineoses , a Bike Ex and a Bora

Red points
This is the main category, with GC, race leader, minor classification (but not young rider) points all thrown in as well as the stage points, and at this stage of the race almost entirely meaningless.

Roglic was 2nd over the line, so with no-one having selected Gesink, it is no surprise that the two teams who spent 70%+ of their budget on that one rider are the top two tonight.

I am away for a few days, travelling light so I won't have a laptop and have no intention of trying to juggle a large spreadsheet on my phone, so I'm afraid the next update will be on Wednesday morning, to report on three stages (but not stages that anyone is expecting to be very definitive for the final standings) . So you will have to wait with baited breath for that. And because I need to make an early start, I won't be able to do the tidying up of the spreadsheet tonight, so I'm afraid you'll have to wait those few days before I share that link too. I'm not expecting any other interruptions to service during the race after that though.

Enjoy the Dutch introductory stages and the first views of Spain.

Right, I am back from my family gathering (very enjoyable, thanks for asking), let's try to catch up a bit.

Standings
I will normally only paste the top ten in the minor classification, but as it is the first time for several days, here we all are.

Vladimir has three stage winners in 4 individual stages (Bennett x2 + Soler)

Red Points, the main classification.
If my flight hadn't been delayed and the roads in such a state last night, I might have been up earlier today to post the standings as of last night, which might have been more realistic, with names that were kind of plausible in the top ten of GC. But because of my travel woes and subsequent lie in, this is now a tale of the changes from stage 1 to stage 5, with the top of GC taken by the breakaway riders who surely cannot expect to defend their current projected points.

Rider changes since the TTT
(not all of them, only if the change => 40 points and they have been selected for the game)

The changes to key positions should start (or continue) tomorrow.

I should be able to manage normal service from here on, with daily updates.

The interforum challenge stands at VR 557, CN 519 and the spreadsheet (which still needs a bit of tidying up) is on Google Docs here, and at the same location throughout.

Tomorrow should see a less dramatic impact on the table. Perhaps.

VR 686, CN 660

And Blues in the Bottle is back on top in the 4 seasons challenge., having yielded the lead briefly to Comodoro.

Stage 7 Plateau after the climb, and mistimed chase.

As frequent players will know, break away stages (unless they are Aquila like) will, like sprint stages, yield stage (green) points, but do very little else for the red competition.

Green points
And not necessarily even a lot of green points

Red points
Points a plenty, mainly from the falling away in GC of Sivakov, Carapaz, Kelderman and, most of all, Molard, and Langellotti's KoM position (unless you had one or more of them...)

Standings
The top three (and 5th and 11th) have Enric Mas, while the shortage of other points available to spend keep the only team with Evenepoel (Evans is the Best) down in 7th. A huge spend on Roglic can still let you get Geoghegan Hart and Soler for 4th (or have Dennis as your second best scorer and leave you in 23rd)

(There was an issue with the spreadsheet yesterday, and I think Soler's points were under-reported: that might account for part of the ten place rises of MV and Vladimir)

Langellotti is a DNF, but his points from stage 5 mean that he will finish in profit in the race, which probably only a handful of others will do, as well as giving his managers the chance to pick a team that would otherwise have been over budget.

Although the top three teams are all on Team VeloRooms, the lead swings to the CN Forumites (717 to 702)

Stage 9 Summit finish not won by Jay Vine shock!

Green points

Not much wild cheering among our managers at the finish line today.

Red points
The most popular rider in the game had the best score of those selected, but scant comfort to those who picked O'Connor or, especially, Geoghegan Hart.
