And off we go...

Teams
43 teams: not the record, but higher than average, and than last year, so welcome to the new players.

I haven't worked on it yet, but I think the team similarity rankings will be very high. I guess that means that all 18 picks will matter, and that lots of us will be in the running for a long time. Maybe.

So here they are:

I had hoped to sneak two of my Irish contigent in as unique picks but everytime I try to pick some obscure guy that I hope will be an unique pick he also ends up on Jakob's team :D

Good luck to all and especially to Axel Mariault and Dean Harvey whom I did manage to sneak past Jakob and are in fact unique picks.

I'd just like to point out that I have Sexton as a unique pick both here and in the main game. Did I pick him solely because of his name? Of course I did!

I had picked him for the main game, and then I decided - among other things - to reuse those of my riders for that game who are under 200 pts.

I have all in top 10 and 14 of the 18 most popular picks so as usual I will likely have one of the most popular or one might also say boring team. The 4 I did not pick in the collective wisdom team were ofcourse also in my thought, but funny enough my last 2 cuts were also nr 19 and 20 here with Poole and Arrieta.

For the 4 popular I skipped, I simply think Herzog and Morgado comming from juniors and being on a continental team this year (unlike other huge talents like Tarling, Svrcek and Leonard) are too young to become good picks, despite obviously being monster talents both of them. I hope and kind of expect they will still be eligable in this game next year, where they will then be obvious picks. Hagenes is ofcourse also a huge talent with a real winnerinstict and was also close to make my team, but again him being very young and starting on the development team counted agaisnt him and also Im not so sure he is the type of rider that will score so much at least early on, and norwegian talents also often dissapoints as pros which also counted againt him. Finally Thompson is ofcourse also a very solid talent, but I just found him to be a big too ordinary a talent compared to the rest in this year with so many huge talents to pick from, but he should do well.

For my 2 rarest picks, like in the maingame I have big confidence in very versatile sprinter Vercher being very solid on the french calendar, even if perhaps many other riders are more talented, and Leonard has been quite scary on the italian junior climbing scene and with Ineos young guys doing so well this year so I dared not skip him, even if he could perhaps also have been saved for next years game.

Collective Wisdom as mentioned at the top is our most popular 18 riders

Collective Ignorance is a team that has no fixed make-up: it is the highest scoring (total) 18 riders that every single one of us overlooked. You could look on a Unique Pick as rescuing someone from that team. It will start very well, but unless we have made some huge mistake (like no-one picking Kevin Vauquelin a year ago) most of us should overtake in due time.

MainGame 2023 is the 18 riders most chosen by those participating in the annual CQ game. Large, but not exact, correlation between that and the popularity table. I might do a little write up on it later.

Good in 2022 draws on the fact that the sub-200 point limit means that riders can show some ability in main races and still be eligible. It is made up of those who scored most points in 2022 while still keeping their totals below 200. But some of them have no contract for 2023, and it doesn't look like it is going to pose much of a challenge to most real teams. It is not the maximum possible previous points combination (more on that later), but would be close to it.

:D Darren Rafferty is not mentioned in the same sentence as the majority of other super-talents but in all honesty, I see him as being "special".

In his fabulous 2021 season - It's easy to forget, but In May, Rafferty crashed at the Hill Town GP and broke 3 ribs, his wrist, and bruised his lung. Then post-recovery, he broke the 10 mile Junior Irish Record averaging 51.4 km/hr and joined Team 31 Jolly and won 3 stage-races and the GP Plouay (110km break) in a 1 month time-span.

Educate me a little on Dean Harvey please? I know he did a bit of cross besides racing on the road, bronze medal at the Irish junior CX nationals in 2020. Almost 3 minutes and 30 seconds behind Rafferty :D. Untapped potential? I see hes signed to Trinity this season.

I see he is from Belfast - cool. The last rider from Northen Ireland I remember hyping was John Buller - legit speed as a junior :)

Haa. For once, I dont have one of the most popular teams for the Emerging game. Only have 8 of the top 10 and 11 of the top 18. So that could be good, but its not. I had Nys on my short list. But the other 6 guys on the Wisdom team I had never heard of and were no where on my list (Penhoet came to my attention but after i submitted my line up). I just dont follow the Junior/U23 racing at all and any info i could find was obviously insufficient. I do find it interesting how quickly we can lose interest in the latest hot talent:
VANDENABEELE Henri 2022 picks: 19 2023 picks: 13
STEINHAUSER Georg 2022 picks: 15 2023 picks: 8

Have they really done so much to make them less appealing this year? They should actually better for the next three years. Also, Romeo was not on my roster until i saw that he was starting in the TdU. If Movistar is putting him into a WT race, then maybe he will get some chances this year even to score points. Although i dont see that hew could really compete much from what I have seen.

I had Rafferty in my first draft in the main game so I was a bit shocked to not see him picked at all there.
I'm afraid I can't tell you much about Harvey. I wanted a third Irish guy on the team and he was the only one that had even a remote chance of scoring some points. Trinity has done a good job of preparing riders for the top level in recent years so hopefully he'll be their next hit.

It's fair that they get picked a lot less. If nothing else last year established that their ceiling isn't super high. Top riders just don't stay eligible an extra year once they hit the WT level.

I wouldn't read to much into Romeo going to Australia. Teams send neo pros to the TDU all the time. Established riders often don't want to do the trip and teams have to send someone. It's also a fairly relaxed environment for their first race so they can ease into their pro career. Much better than say throwing them into the deep end at Omloop for instance.

For my 2 rarest picks, like in the maingame I have big confidence in very versatile sprinter Vercher being very solid on the french calendar, even if perhaps many other riders are more talented

I like a lot the Vercher pick, I think he's a good talent being a little under radar because he mostly only rode french calendar, and he'll do very well in the game. Total Energies has proved in the past years that they give opportunities to score big points to his neos since year 1.

He was one of my last cuts alongside Pickering, Syritsa, Poole, Penhoet, Thompson & Ryan.
The only collective wisdom pick I think it's a little overrated is Svrcek. The Quick Step effect I guess.

Yes Vercher has a lot of benefits here likely getting a lot of chances for himself from year one in this competition.

I have Svrcek too though, and yes him going to Quick Step is definetly something that always likely to give more picks, and his fairly quiet 2022 could perhaps make him seem overrated, but at the same time Quick Step sounds very optimistic and hyped about him and in 2021 he was so dominant in the italian junior 1. day races that he was a safe pick on my team.

Good points. Unless your name is Marco Brenner. Then you get several second chances :)
2021 - 40? (highest picked rider anyway)
2022 - 27
2023 - 29

Rafferty is indeed a super interesting talent. After juniors he was fo me one of the top talents to follow in their first u23 year and he did according to the expectations. Just like Fredheim, another good one, or even Pickering & Poole... They did great but I just rate Martinez, Gregoire, Segaert, Hagenes & Mihkels higher, and there's no place for everyone. Hope I'll can pick them next year if they don't go over 200 (like Uijtdebroeks already did).

About Harvey, looks like a very good rider but on paper he's clearly inferior than Rafferty or the "veteran" Ryan. Fun fact is that he won over both of them the national u23 champ this 2022. Btw about Ryan, although he's a 4 year u23 he could have even good potential still, cause his recurring knee problems were slowing down him in the past seasons until his breakthrough last year (and that's paradoxicaly the reason why I didn't choose him in the end, cause maybe the knee get bad again -hope not- and I didn't know who to cut for the last 19 riders haha).

I got a bit disillusioned about Vandenabeele in his debut as a pro (& already his 2020 at u23 level was better than his 2021) but I have to differ about Steinhauser. He had a season full of bad luck with sickness and he was less prepared for his debut as a pro (was more raw talent and 1 year younger but I think with higher ceiling). Well, so I'm still believing in Steinhauser, he showed some glimpses of real talent, like top10 in Romandie prologue (in his first WT race ever & coming back from a ilness) & 5th at Germany itt champs. And I have to add that he was still working in his father factory finishing his degree, he's only going to live as a cycling pro from 2024. His father btw is an ancient pro and his uncle is Ullrich... And on paper he's not a tt specialist but a climber that excells in long range stages... He's got a great motor that got Vaughters very hype last winter.
Anyway this year the field was so stocked that Steinhauser was one of my later picks (17th in my list).

Personally, I think the italian junior circuit in the last seasons is relatively weak comparing to other european countries, I would even rather spanish circuit higher now. Karel Vacek was impressive there 4 seasons ago for example, and then he has been a bust. It's true next year I was hyped about Piccolo & Tiberi and somehow got it right (altough their 1st u23 season was also mediocre), but in the last couple of seasons the italians have been quite dull in the international junior scene. So for me that's not enough, altough surely Svrcek has good qualitys, his u23 worlds performance was impressive nonetheless. I would say something similar this year about Leonard, surely he has a great potential and Ineos giving him a chance is a good hint, but I want to see him first at a higher level than the italian junior scene. Spanish bias maybe, as with Rodriguez & Ayuso I didn't need to see more :D

Yes it may be some pretty cheap wins Svrcek got there in 2021. But the combination of them with the very optimistic words from Quick Step about him and the Quick Step effect still got me convinsed. Its a bit the same with Leonard where it was also the combination of him destrying Italian juniors combined with the mentions of great testresults and for instance him comparing himself very directly to Carlos Rodriquez, turning pro after the juniorranks with Ineos and being a similar rider and hoping to do as well as him, and also with the trend going more and more in favour of young guys breaking through quicker. But I agree that Italian junior results or even u23 results dont mean as much as it may have done once and some more international results would have been reassuring.

Interesting for me is Piganzoli being picked more than Milesi.
I probably wouldn't pick any of them if I weren't Italian but if I had to choose I'd go 99% for Milesi. Ceiling seems a lot higher (new to the sport, better TTer, better punch, has won races against very good competition already) despite Piganzoli being the more consistent thus far.

As for my team, after selecting 12 riders I was very confident about I decided to pick a few riders to cheer for in the following years (the two Italians, Rondel, Herzog) even if I believe it might be a little early.

The other two picks are Van Eetvelt and Penhoet, two riders I wouldn't have picked but I noticed they were relatively popular in the main game so I figured they would be must have in this one.

Hmmm, I've overlooked Brenner, didn't realise he was still sub 200 CQ points.

I have 14 riders from the Collective Wisdom team and only one rider with fewer than 10 picks and I'm still only 11th in the popularity score, geez, we all had the same ideas.

A few more stats:

Comparison with selection for the main game:
There were 182 riders chosen for the main CQ Game that were eligible for this, of whom Romain Gregoire was most selected there (60 of 102(?) teams) as he was here (40 of 43). They were published in this thread as the 'cheat sheet', and 29 of our teams were made up entirely of riders chosen at least once there (whether by reference to that list or not).
But it is not a direct correlation: A lot of those in the main game were not chosen at all here (ROMO OLIVER Javier 6 times, COSTIOU Ewen/PUPPIO Antonio/RODENBERG MADSEN Frederik/VERMAERKE Kevin each 4 times,
GAROFOLI Gianmarco/HOLLYMAN Mason/LECERF William Junior/VACEK Karel thrice, along with 13 who were selected twice and 72 unique picks); 25 of our picks here were not selected there, including Darren Rafferty and Raul Garcia (3 teams in this game) and Carl Bevort and Max van der Meulen (2 teams)
Other riders who are disproportionately popular in the main game are Vader (13 - 1), Heiduk (11 - 1) Ponomar (11 - 2), Leonard (14 - 4) and Riccitello (10 - 3); the opposite phenomenon is exhibited by Ryan (5 - 26), Heming (1 - 4), Hagenes (7 - 24), Luhrs (1 - 3), Anders Johannessen (2 - 6), Segaert (5 -13) and Hessmann (4 - 10).

Previous points
It's possible to rate teams according to how many points their riders had prior to 2022: I'm not sure that we can conclude much from it though. Teams at the bottom of the table have probably picked more of their riders immediately out of the junior ranks. The Good in 2022 team not surprisingly has the highest score, but some real teams are not far behind.

Team similarity
The highest amount of overlap between 2 teams is 14, which happens between 13 pairs of teams.
The weird thing is that 8 of these 13 pairs include Skidmark: with Armchair Cyclist, Devil's Elbow, Fivezzz, Joelsim, Madrazo, Otoxiep87, SafeBet and Zipi Zapismo.
The other 14 man pairings are Armchair Cyclist and Otoxiep, Berflamand and Cordi, DJW and Fivezzz, Fivezzz and Salvarani, and Lukas CPH and Otoxiep.
15 rider overlaps do exist, between the Collective Wisdom Team and Devil's Elbow, Fivezzz, Jumbo Visma Fan and Skidmark. Also between Madrazo and the most commonly picked in the Main Game team (and that team with Common Wisdom)

Inter-Forum challenge
Average scores from the teams according to which of the forums they were submitted through will be tracked throughout the three years as a competition, and those who are members of Parlamiento Ciclista appear on that team as well (apart from me: I have joined that site, but exclude myself from the averages)
Team VeloRooms has Amis Velo, Cordi, DJW, Josedin, Joelsim, Leadbelly, LukasCPH, Otoxiep87, Rote Laterne, Scrooll07 and Zipi Zapismo;
Parlamiento has Alvarakas, Comodoro, Cordi, Jon Ezeitza, Josedin, Kryvoskyn and Ludwigzgz
Cycling News Forum has everyone else, and those in the PC team who are not on VeloRooms.

Spreadsheet
Here it is: I will aim to update it, and this thread, early each month: it is sometimes delayed if other games are active at the same time, or if real life intervenes.

So, who will be the best of the Collective Ignorance team in three years time to make us all look silly? Romo? Magnier? Shmidt? Pidcock?

I see your point. And I very much agree Piganzoli is currently the better rider, I'm just not sure he will be the better one in 3 years.
DSM being DSM can limit Milesi's growth, but it might also go in his favor since he hasn't been riding a bike for long and needs some more structured training. Milesi has been very inconsistent and has crashed a little too much so far but someone who can win a TT, a punchy finish and a mountain stage (albeit from the break) in top U23 races will always catch my attention. The potential to be a stud is there, I think.

As for Piganzoli, Ivan Basso once said he has comparable numbers to Mas and Juanpe Lopez at same age. So he's very likely going to be a WT caliber rider at some point, but his development will determine whether he'll be a GT podium contender already in his first three years among the pros or "only" a solid climber who can get a top5 here and there.
Picking Piganzoli (as I did) means betting on him being closer to Mas than to Lopez in terms of potential but I gotta admit I don't see many paths for him to be relevant in this game.

BTW Milesi crashed out of the U23 NC TT last year, but it's true Piganzoli beat him in 2021 when they both were first years u23.
