So long as you leave enough in your underspend to pay for the cheapest two riders on the startline, sure. I won't force you to take points from them if you don't want them.

Edit: since writing that, I have told a manager who sent in a 7 man team that I would have to replace his cheapest rider with two that he can afford both of. Ruthless, I am.

okay, so basically you need 8 riders

Major Picks
The build up has all been about Evenepoel or Roglic. It appears that largely those who think Roglic will win, have found him worth the big price, and those who predict Evenepoel for victory have been going for Almeida. But then, fairly late among the submissions, came Rote Laterne with what is probably the most expensive buy in CQ game history (how expensive was Pogacar for the Tour last year? I'll try to remember to look that up sometime), A few decided that Roglic and Almeida doesn't need to be either/or, but could be both. Some big buys looking for stages and the Purplish(see other years for my aversion to reference to a cyclamen jersey) jersey (Pedersen and Matthews, although attributing a tactic to RhD's selections might be giving more credit than is due). There are other GC challengers who are affordable even after a splurge buy that feature, amd some managers take the Arkea approach of as many men in the top ten as possible even if they don't try to get the winner. And one manager apparently focussed on the first pink jersey.

The riders who have been bought for more than 600 points:

I couldn't just put the most popular 8 riders into the Collective Wisdom team, or it would have been waaaaay over budget. The riders in bold make up the most popular permitted group.

Team popularity
Unique picks give 1 point here, Jack Haig gives 24, per the table above

Kazistuta has to be the closest anybody has ever gotten to the Collective Wisdom team in their selection right ? 6/8 + Groves who is actually more popular than the two guys from the Collective Wisdom team he omitted.

I tend to not finish very high in the popularity ranking but even for me this is low. Well I guess it's not my fault nobody wanted to buy tickets to the Buitrago hype train.

I made two teams, Roglic, TGH, Caruso/Groves (haven't decided who I'd go for, possibly Groves) and Haig and the Remco one.
I was not particularily fond of the Roglic one so I went with Remco. I really like my decision now as nobody else took the risk. And at least the race started better than expected for me.
Have fun everyone.

Well, if just a few others found Stevie W as intreaging as I do, it'd likely be 8/8.
But usually I'm quite high in the popularity rankings (guess I like "easy" picks), and with this first place I can now call my giro team a success regardless of the outcome in three weeks:)

Correction

An apology: Scrooll07 had sent me a change to his team on Friday morning that I acknowledged and recorded, but only on one part of the spreadsheet, not on the part that I quote team lists and calculate popularity of riders from.

His team should be:
ROGLIC Primoz
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves
HAIG Jack
CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander
KUSS Sepp
CONTI Valerio
CIMOLAI Davide
DEKKER David
Dennis and Bonifaccio out, Cepeda and Conti in

Cepeda is therefore no longer a unique pick for Leadbelly, and the popularity table now reads

I have also made changes to the Collective wisdom team so that it includes as many as possible of the most popular riders, while still within budget. So it now consists of
Haig
Roglic
Dunbar
Vlasov
Dekker
The average of Caruso, Groves and Kamna
Twice the average of Dennis, Moscon and Conti

(Almeida, Geoghegan Hart and Milan are as popular or more so, but no amount of averaging out was going to have them contribute to a score that stays in budget)

No, you can't average a bunch of riders together in your submissions for future games.

Team similarity

I have in the past sometimes had to invite teams to name an extra rider to be a tiebreaker between otherwise identical teams. That's not necessary here, but Kazistuta has 75% crossover with both Armchair Cyclist and Berlus (a new player from the Parlamento Ciclista site which has given us many other participants).
There are 5 man intersections between a number of teams:
Armchair and Berlus,
Berlus and Search,
Bminchow and Bonimenier,
Bminchow and Peixotini,
Bminchow and Titan31,
Devil's Elbow and Rufs,
Devil's Elbow and Scrooll07,
Jumbo Visma Fan and Kazistuta,
Kazistuta and Search,
Peixotini and Titan31,

With the expanded Collective Wisdom team there are greater chances for overlap:
Kazistuta 7
Berlus, Leadbelly, Los Brolin, 6 each
Anderis, Armchair Cyclist, Googolplex, Jumbo Visma Fan, Ricco, Search 5 each.

You will be able to see your own match-ups when I post the Spreadsheet, but that and the actual race result from today will be in the morning (I have had a very odd evening in real life)

So, finally (I hope not to have as long a delay on other stages)

Stage points
Most teams had at least one of Roglic and Almeida, and Geoghegan Hart was fairly popular, so a lot of OK scores, but two unique picks topped the day.
Popularity
EVENEPOEL Remco701
GANNA Filippo401
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves2511
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao158
KÜNG Stefan100
ROGLIC Primoz721
VINE Jay50
MCNULTY Brandon31
THOMAS Geraint20
VLASOV Aleksandr115

I hadn't really noticed as the teams came in, the general uncertainty about who will be Ineos leader is not shared among the managers here, with Geoghegan Hart picked 8 times and Thomas, although cheaper, invariably dismissed.

The points for stage one are also the first standings for the Purple Jersey (the word cyclamen is not in common use in English as the name of a colour, and if you look up images of the flower of that name it is much paler: annual minor rant done) minor classification: stage points only. Sometimes it just repeats the main game, sometimes it provides a different set of challengers.

Pink Points
The main game is not just stage points, it also includes daily (except stage 21) pink jersey winner bonus of 18 points, and standings in the point and mountain classifications (same distribution of points as a stage, note that there are no white jersey points) as well as, most importantly, GC standings.
At this stage, those are mainly the same as yesterday's finish order except for outside the top 50 on GC (everyone gets the same 15 predicted finisher points) and that the two men ahead of Almeida in the mountains rankings are McNulty and Geoghegan Hart, not Evenepoel and Ganna.

I won't normally show such a long list here, but these are the initial points for every rider that was selected.

But you don't need to find your own riders among that lot and add them together: that 's what the rankings table below is for.

Perhaps a totally one-man team doesn't work, as Rote Laterne's Remco-centric team is not top, but with pink jersey bonuses and possible withdrawals to come, one never knows

You might wonder how I split Devil's Elbow and TRiley for third place: they had the same >15 point scorers, so I gave the nod to DE on the basis of his best placed not-top-50 rider (Stork) having finished 5 places ahead of Moscon for TRiley. Thus is won a place on the first podium. Really couldn't be bothered splitting those in joint 24th. I will probably address ties in the top ten, but frankly, that might depend on my mood/timetable.

The spreadsheet is on Google Drive Same as usual: there is no archiving of updates, so the same link is going to be current as soon as I have done the number crunching each day. Because it is the same link, I don't bother posting it every time, so remember that it can be found at the foot of the first update.

Stage 2

Unusually for a GT stage, the result is dominated by lower budget sprinters, the kind that are often picked but rarely rewarding, so several teams take decent purple points. GC became a bit of a mess though...

If your team isn't listed, you didn't score (unless somethings gone wrong with the spreadsheet)

Standings
I think I have traditionally posted the whole list here, but I think I will save your scrolling by only putting the top ten for the minor classification, as I do in the Spring Classics game. If I get requests to change back, I will.

No tiebreakers for shared positions here, at least not yet: if it becomes nescessary at the pointy end, I will examine old GT games or propose something. Or declare an honourable draw, depending on my mood.

Pink points
Because riders can fall in classifications, they can lose their projected points (some points, namely stage and pink jersey bonuses, are guaranteed, even if the rider never reaches Rome). A rider's daily variation can therefore be negative. I will post daily score variations, positive and negative, of riders who are on a team who have the most significant moves each day: sometimes the threshhold will be quite high, sometimes very low.

GC points (barring non-finishers) and the other classifications are a zero sum game: if one rider drops dramatically (and you don't get many falls of more than Ganna's 119 position drop today), others move up, through no particular achievement of their own, to fill that void. That is where much of today's point changes come from.

Standings
Yellow Knight, the only manager to suffer Ganna's huge point loss, loses that large margin and top spot, but is still second.
Although Vlasov is behind Roglic on GC, and has just one stage point, those who combine Almeida and Vlasov hold the top places, with TRiley in 4th the highest placed of the Roglic teams.

Soudal Quickstep have made it clear that they want to relinquish the pink jersey on stage 4: there should therefore be a considerable, if largely temporary, shake up tomorrow. But to whose benefit?

Stage 4 The handover of the jersey

Two members of the break are active in the game, but only one of them stayed away. And won.

Standings
On 5 very different stages, Peixotini has a worst daily Purple point position of joint tenth, and today was his second win in a row. And Fiorelli's balancing act means that with Samu Cuenca getting 5 points, everyone now has had at least one rider getting a top ten finish, and therefore has points in this classification (and unlike the Pink Points, these ones cannot be lost)

Pink Points
As often happens on non-GC days, there are only rather minor pink point changes other than the stage points and pink jersey bonus. What else there is today is largely due to riders passing Vine, Uran and Conci.

Conti, as a DNS today, becomes the first to illustrate (for the 7 teams who picked him), the loss of the 15 points that every rider who finishes the Giro will get. Hoping that there will not be too many more DNSes in the morning.
