A daily top score near the end of the race might go some way towards making up for Laarsland having been scuppered by Landa's injury on day one.

Congratz for those who picked Del Toro! I didn't see his good result coming and didn't even consider him.
Had high expectations from Ayuso, Arensman, Poole and Rubio. Only Rubio is steady. Not my best game,

Redemption or capitulation?

Stage points

And again, a winner who makes instantly for a pretty good value pick, although he had probably disappointed those who went for him prior to today.

Sprinters are fairly few and far between in these teams. I reckon Bminchow is favourite to take it, through Groves if he makes the top three tomorrow, but if Zijlaard (for DJW) is 8th or better, then he would need Groves to be 2nd (at least). Unless Bennett (for Abbulf) suddenly rides like it is 2020.

Standings

Two of the Del Toro teams have Yates, so they don't suffer too much (Del Toro is still giving 260 odd points more), but the change in race leadership causes some disruption in the higher, but not highest, places here.

Typically, a few riders in the 30s and 40s of GC will somehow lose time on the last day, so there might be something other than stage points to be altered here tomorrow, but not much.

Did you forget about Casper Van Uden who already has a first and second place this Giro?

Oh man, missed the podium by one CQ-point. Maybe there’s a chance if Van Uden takes Del Toros fifth place in the points classification. Van Uden needs 22 points.
So assuming Del Toro does not sprint like he did yesterday and leaving aside the intermediate sprints, third place would take Van Uden into 5th, and DJSprtsch into 3rd (Del, as noted in the previous post, is sprinterless). Behind DJSprtsch, nobody in range has anyone in whom much hope could be invested today.

But in the points classification, if Groves wins and Van Uden is 3rd, then they are tied. I'm not sure what the tie breaker is, but I suspect that two stage wins will put that in Groves' favour, and Van Uden will not be any higher up the rankings. That means (if I am correct in my assumption) that a win for Groves would mean that Van Uden needs second for DJSprtsch to push Del off the podium.

But aside from the sprinters, it is very plausible that Masnada or Frigo, for example, not realising the importance of their current placings in this game, might lose or gain a couple of GC slots.

The Cepeda cousins did a slower sightseeing tour of Rome at the end, meaning that Wout Poels moved into the final placing on GC that scores anything more than finishing points, so the only significant placement that seemed in any jeopardy gets double the gap of this morning (Del 1962 over DJSprtsch)

Congratulations to Abbulf, who is a relatively recent addition to our gaming circle, but has seemed very enthusuastic, and also to Sam and Del on the podium. Congratulations to Bminchow in the points classification, and to DJW and Abbulf who were on the podium in that.

Thanks to CQ for the system, PCS for the results that I used, whoever invented MS Excel, and to all of you for joining in. I hope you all got at least some kind of minor victory some day.

I'll probably post some number crunching tomorrow, but that aside, see you for

Despite Yates being the winner, Del Toro massively outpointed him, not only because of the 180 point difference in pink jersey points

Best possible team:
It's rare that anyone sends in a team more than 100 points below the budget, but sometimes that's the right thing to do.

They would have won the purple with 683 points
Abbulf therefore scored 65.1 % of the maximum possible, very much in the typical range for a winner.

This is close to the list of impeccable picks (so if after choosing 7 riders, you still had (eg) more than 39 points left, but fewer than 79, you could not have done better than picking James Knox (which is a lesson to those who picked Affini, Azparren, Bouchard, Bouwman, Castroviejo, Colleoni, Hamilton (l), Pietrobon, Schultz, Tonelli, Vader or Van Baarle))

The Collective Wisdom team came in a virtual 8th place: at least it beat the best possible team of those not picked at all, the Collective Ignorance selection (or non-selection)

Hard luck table
Expensive picks such as Roglic, Ayuso, Ciccone, Landa and Fretin didn't make it as far as Rome: only three of our teams had all eight men finishing. I count the cost of non finishers as their price minus any stage points they picked up, so by that token our bad luck table is :

but while the loss of Roglic was probably terminal, even Ayuso's DNF wouldn't put an end to a teams chances, and 2 of the eventual podium had him. Even with Ayuso, a score of 2676 was possible.

Those who take part in all 3 GT games and the Spring Classics game become entrants in the 4 Seasons competition, this is how we stand at the halfway stage (with change in rank since the Classics)
