Are they still having the Montreal classic shortly before the WCs?
Yes, GP Montreal is on the 13th of September 2026. The WC RR will be on the 27th of September 2026. I guess most riders will already go to Montreal beforehand to ride the GP, and just say there.

I was thinking that some city in the Northeast U.S. should find a big sponsor and hold a race on the intervening weekend. But realized that wouldn’t fly because of border issues.

You've got Maryland Cycling Classic beforehand in the US, so it is possible to do something in the states. There's also the WC ITT between Montreal and WC RR.

Forgot about the ITT. For foreign nationals it will probably be simpler just to do Canadian racing and avoid visa issues.

You'd pretty much struggle to put together courses where this wouldn't happen, short of an MTT for Tadej, P-R cobbles for MvdP and a pan flat race for the sprinters. Maybe a technical downhill MTT for Pidcock with some gravel.
I don’t know why you’d try to combine different disciplines into a single race. For folks who for some reason demand an all-a-rounder as world champion, it would be best to do a T&F decathlon equivalent. Separate races in which riders point totals are based on a high-level standard. But that’s not what bike racing is about.

Zero issues with a flat RR. Will it be a bit boring? Yes, but imagine Phillipson wearing the rainbow jersey for a year ala Cav
