Any chance you are mixing up 2009 and 2004? 2009 was the year Maier ended his career, winning the super-g world cup in his last race ever.

So this is about our favourite sports moments now? Mine of course is Messi winning the world cup in 2014. 
But close to it is when Germany decided to get rid of Löw shortly afterwards, because they knew he'd never reach those heights of a final again... I once woke up, embarrassed by Löw publicly sticking his finger in places where they don't belong (certainly not on TV), was so relieved in the morning that it had just been a dream... just like that fiasco at the WC 2018... yeah, I know, in the end it was Argentina vs. Germany again, but I really dreamed that Germany was last in a group with South Korea and Sweden...

I was a young boy but I remember il pirata leaving big mig and Gianetti with a big attack, leaving them for dead..and then bridging upto ti Olano. The way he beat Olano in the sprint to take gold at the WCC, Duitama 95 was pure class.
Favourite sports moments, or sports moments we wish had happened, I'm not so sure anymore.
Vaguely remember the name from when I'd just watch Eurosport when bored. Watched a lot more skiing, ski jumping and snooker than I care to admit.
Boonen finally taking his fifth Paris-Roubaix in 2016 was brilliant. Really thought Hayman had it there for a second, what a shock that would have been! If Boonen had lost that sprint I'd probably still be mourning that five years later.
