Probably hurts a bit though
Cyclists are among the most pain-resistant athletes I know.
True, but a tough 250k race with a seriously hurt nose might not be great.

Oh well, it's a shame but it happens

Valgren told TV 2 (Danish media) that they want to make the race hard from further out, because they don't have anybody who can follow the best up Cauberg in the final. Furthermore, he told that he has a completely free role, but that Kreuziger was still the most protected rider by the team.

I hope they attack from far.

Only orica wants to wait no?

Yeah I'm thinking the same. Should get some attacks well before the final hill. No one should try and take Matthews or Gerrans to the line.

I think alot of teams will fancy their chances on the final ascent of Cauberg: Orica, Sky, Etixx, BMC, DDD, Katusha...

which is sad, i think only phil in best form could beat orica waiting for the final 3 km. all the strong teams should attack before and tire orica...

Yes, I definitely agree that they should almost all open up the race. Though to be fair, Kwiatkowski did win here last year so he has proved that he can beat Orica in this exact situation.

Kwiatkowski won because Matthews was able to suck Gilbert's wheel in the Cauberg.

If I remember correctly, Gilbert didn't want to pull Matthews to the line in the final 2k's so he sat up and after Valverde arrived at their wheels he didn't wanted to work either, which allowed the big regrouping. Kwia wasn't very good in the climb, maybe outside of the top-10 after the Cauberg.

yes you remembered it perfectly, which is kind of frightening :p

normally at least 10 riders can climb cauberg under 1min 35sec so the chance of regrouping is 90%. especially with headwind in the last 2 km.

You still need someone to pull though. If it's a group of 10 favourites, each with no team-mates, behind a decent rouleur like Gilbert, Kwiat or Vakoc, then they may well all look at each other and a rider with just 5 second advantage at the top could stay away.

The coverage has started, but nothing from the road, yet.
Looks calm, without the wind, at the finish line.
Some head wind, correction. And coolish, it appears.

He was at the front for whole Cauberg, and for sure wasn't outside of the top 10 or even top 5 after the Cauberg.

Last year at the top of Cauberg it was
Gilbert, Matthews

Kwiatkowski, Valverde Caruso, Gasparotto

Martin, Costa, Fuglsang, Van Avermaet, Gilbert, Kreuziger, Moreno

in that order

No sure how a 90% regrouping stat was calculated so precisely

Anyway SKY with Heano,Poles, etc will have team mates to pull
