For all this Amstel-bashing, I have to say (ok, old finish) that 2009 victory by Sergei Ivanov was absolutely breath-taking.

I just had to re-watch it... That anticipation he showed in attacking INTO Cauberg proved genius. The breakaway trio of Gesink-Kroon-Ivanov was basically caught about 1,2 K to go. At that point Ivanov attacked and no one in peloton was brave enough to commit. Gap which was 4 seconds at 1K banner re-opened to more than 10 secs and was still 6 seconds at the finishing line. Maybe Ivanov wasn't fastest up the Cauberg, but he was quickest for the final K out of breakaway!

Great race. And very hard and selective already on earlier climbs. Not too many people together when they hit Cauberg.

Gasparotto to amaze all like Rebellin in Flèche Wallone 2009 style

Not a bad bet at all, but i think the flat part on the top will hinder him to take the win.

I have a feeling that Lutsenko will do well today, unless he is stuck working for Aru

Last year at the top of Cauberg it was
Gilbert, Matthews

Kwiatkowski, Valverde Caruso, Gasparotto

Martin, Costa, Fuglsang, Van Avermaet, Gilbert, Kreuziger, Moreno

in that order
Matthews basically won the race for Kwiat by staying with Gilbert, so that he stopped riding. No way a group of Kwiat, Valverde, Caruso and Gasporotto would have worked well enough together to reel in Gilbert on the run in to the line.

I guess Orica will try to get Gerrans to follow Gilbert's attack this year, with Matthews pacing himself better and then winning the sprint if it all comes back together.

Aru has said that he isn't the leader for Amstel. Targeting Liege and Fleche.

Vuillermoz down, hope he gets back on. He is the type who can actually liven the race up a bit.

Yes you are right Gerrans will stick to Gilbert who is still the best up the Cauberg

Thing is they may stay away becasue this year Gilbert won't slow down and there may be another rider or 2 just behind them
IF it comes back together there is still a chance Matthews does not win the sprint

But what if Gerrans follows Gilbert's wheel and then decides to work together with him?

Then Gerrans wins the sprint and victory for Orica.
Exactly - win,win for Orica. Although I think Matthews wil be straight in the taxi back to the hotel rather than join in the celebrations on the team bus! :)

Why are you using the roll eyes smilies

This is what could indeed happen and what Gerrans must secretly hope for given his relationship with Matthews
He follows team orders but beats Gilbert

Gerrans works with no one. Disgusting wheelsucker
