Buenahora had already been flagged up for high haematocrit a couple of years before his ephedrine positive. He got what he deserved.

Here is a good profile of the Alto de La Línea for those who haven't seen it. It's like Mont Ventoux had been on the juice.

uci had special rules for colombian uci races to have hematocrit up to 52% because of the altitude. I think in 2006 they removed the rule and 70% went over 50% in that year, that's the reason only this stage race is still on uci calendar and not rcn. when you live on more than 3000 metres altitude for generations you'll have a hard time getting your hematocrite below 50%

Although that's true, didn't the high levels come after a test late in the race? So he'd been passed fit at the start, but then his haematocrit suddenly got too high before the last mountain stage or whatever it was. Most of the top riders passed their checks, only Buenahora and a couple of others didn't.

no it was such a chaos. 70% of all riders didn't pass the test. the commissioners and uci panicked and then decided to take out one rider per team and they took out Castelblanco from Buenahora's team? And left Buenahora in but according to their own riduclous new rules 70% of all participants had to excluded. They changed back to 52% rule again next year I think.

many riders in colombia race at a very high level, look at israel ochoa, he was top ten in wc 1995 in duitama and he's 46 and still at pretty strong level, libardo nino is 41, elder herrera is 41.

I love this race. I'll be cheering for the young riders.

Hernan Buenahora is a legend but he is no saint. He came from the Kelme school. Enough said.

That reminds me, chicks in cycling shirts are hot!
Well hot chicks in cycling shirts, that is....
They somehow manage to bring out the best of Colombia at their annual Tour. Impressive
Can't wait to see them slobbering up Jose Rujano :)

Yeah Schleck would need another chaingate and AC finishing a mountain stage starting at 2000 ending after 150 miles at 3600 with 30 min behind crying for his mama.

Here the team Prez on YouTube with more swinging ohlala starting at 3.35 :

That's why people who have won the Vuelta a Colombia never won the Tour de France. And trust me, there are Colombians who have tried to win it :)

Luis Herrera for example.

With good altitude training and preparation for this Vuelta I'm pretty sure both Schleck and Conti could win it.

But no decent European cyclist will enter this competition which is a shame really. The world needs a new Grand Tour with bigger mountain stages. South America is the perfect place for that.

Cafe de Colombia went off the map in 1989. Then Herrera and Co. started racing with Postobon. Buenahora started racing in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 with Kelme. I can tell you that if you rode with Kelme during those days you'll become suspicious in my book immediately. Again he is a legend but no saint.

For what it's worth, Kelme sucked until 1997 or thereabouts (or, maybe more accurately, until they signed Escartín in 1996). Maybe their previous suckiness was due to their lack of organization and also lack of talent rather than to any relative cleanliness though. And I wouldn't think things were different at Vitalicio anyway. Don't mind me, I'm just rambling here.

Small question at what time are these stages ridden most of the time, that way I'll know when to start searching for a stream
