For what it's worth, I managed to find out how this came to be: He had the national champ jersey plus pants, the whole kit, but it was a wee bit too small for his own comfort. Somebody messed up and he got it one size too small, apparently. Couldn't really breathe in it, so he only had it on for inscription and presentation, but not in the race.
By now he has received the correct size, so look forward to seeing the (unfortunately) least visible champions jersey ever. ;)
