Any thoughts on Rohregger for LEO. He is Austrian and probably knows Grossglockner like the back of his hand.

If he gets lucky and gets into the break he has a chance I suppose. Judging by his performance in Romandie he seems to be in good shape

Sometimes you just have to reply to an idiotic/trolling post:

How can people say that saying a guy who won a grand tour and came 3rd in another in the same year has a chance this year is overrating them. Utter nonsense as usual.

It will be tough for Nibali to win particularly with Contador there but he is a more complete GT rider then many of the others mentioned. i expect him to at least podium.

You also have to look at how those races unfolded, of course. In the Giro Scarponi actually took several minutes on Nibali in the mountains, but he was unlucky elsewhere. In the Vuelta his strongest opponent (Anton) crashed out, and his second strongest opponent (Rodriguez) was completely cooked in the third week, after a loooong season. All three of those guys will be there in the Giro, fresh as a daisy, plus the strongest GT rider of all, Contador, and 3 time GT winner Menchov. All those things considered I think Nibali will be very lucky if he makes the podium.

What Nibali does have going for him, though, is the newfound confidence of being a GT winner, and being the sole team leader in their home race.

Well, Nibali only knew he was going to make the Giro 1 week before it started, so he wasn't at his best.

I think this is grossly overstated by Nibali and the team. The team had knowledge that Pellizoti was under investigation and would most likely not be allowed to start, so I think Nibali knew at least a month before the giro that he would most likely be starting there

fixed it for you. just cus he was racing in portugual for the past few years it doesn't make him weaker then a young guy like duarte or a guy that has shown nothing in the past 2 seasons like cobo :p

I don't think Cobo is riding. Rumour has it he was going to be dropped from the preselection because he's even beyond Matxín's help.

damn what a video.niemiec and scarponi will make contador's life in il giro pretty difficult.also michele probably one of the nicest persons in the peloton.

wow just one more week and the biggest show on earth will begin!!!!!

Yea, Scarponi is the jolly joker of the bunch. He is played up as such too in the Italian media.

He's also the proverbial underdog. Gotta route for the guy.

It would be great if he gave Conta a run for the money. In any case, the course in this year's Giro is kick-a$$.

I wonder how the first stage, the Team Time Trial will turn out. Last year Liquigas won it, what would happen if they win it this year?

Of course the first few stages they could be expected to get help by team with sprinters to catch the breakaways, but that didn't go so well in stages 5 and 6 yesteryear before they lost the pink jersey on the Strade Bianchi stage.

Maybe Liquigas doesn't want to be in the pink jersey after the TTT? Should be interesting to see the tactics by Saxo Bank-Sungard, Liquigas-Cannondale, HTC-Highroad and Team Sky. Maybe RadioShack will be in the mix?

My bet is HTC.

So Porte has now been selected for the Giro.

http://saxobanksungard.com/ny_news.asp?n_id=3151

The entire team is:

Alberto Contador, Kasper Klostergaard, Jesus Hernandez, Daniel Navarro, Michael Mørkøv, Matteo Tosatto, Laurent Didier, Richie Porte og Volodymir Gustov

Not looking good for any of the other teams imo. The worlds best GT rider, plenty of experience, plenty of young talent, plenty of climbers, plenty of TT riders.

Is this the best team for the giro?

Considering Porte isn't in form and is basing his season around July, could it be possible that he will pull out half way through and is only going to help in the team time trial and the first couple mountain stages?

TTT is not particularly important and a rider who's been finishing in the last group for most part of April isn't much help in the mountains

Yes, and not just by looking at the riders, but by looking at the management as well. I guess Nick Nuyens will ride the Tour then?

TTT can easily give you a free minute on some lesser teams with great climbers.

They'll take 1 minute max, in a 20 k TT. This doesn't really look like a team that could control the race in the mountains, except for Dani Navarro, and Hernandez, to a lesser extent.

Have you ever seen a team control the Giro in the mountains? Maybe back in 2004 when there were 20 sprinting stages lol(hyperbole. It were only 19 sprinting stages to be fair.).

Given that Porte replaced Larsson the gains for a TTT from such a change aren't really likely to be race desive.
