Contenders
SCARPONI_MICHELE.jpg

Michele Scarponi: The defending champion (even though I remember another guy lifting the trophy last year) is ready to the double, arguably supported by the strongest team.

BASSO_IVAN.jpg

Ivan Basso: After winning the title twice, he's now called to justify Nibali's absence in this race. He had a very bad early season, but in Romandie he showed some improvements. He definitely can get his past shape in time for the final week.

RUJANO_GUILLEN_JOSE_HUMBERTO.jpg

José Humberto Rujano Guillen: Last year he seemed the only one holding the pace of Mr.X... His weak spot could be the very first week.

KREUZIGER_ROMAN.jpg

Roman Kreuziger: The Astana guys have been pretty amazing this year... This Giro seems very unpredictable and he has a real chance to deliver.

SCHLECK_FRANK.jpg

Frank Schleck: What I said about Basso holds true for him, too. He haven't been preparing the Giro, but Bruyneel seems confident he can make it just as in 2008

GADRET_JOHN.jpg

John Gadret: Despite being French, the Giro is his favourite race. He improved every year and now he seems ready for the podium.

RODRIGUEZ_OLIVER_JOAQUIN.jpg

Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver: Can he hold his ardennes form until the third week? If he can, then he'll be a serious threat to everyone.

CUNEGO_DAMIANO.jpg

Damiano Cunego: After a horrible Ardennes campaign but an excellent Trentino, he seems now more a GC guy than a one day racer. Can he steal the Giro to his teammate just like he did in 2004?

Route Detalis:
After Zomegnan left the direction of the Giro, everyone was expecting an easier route, supported by the declarations of the new RCS boss Acquarone who said repeatedly the this year Giro would be more "human". As a result, the Giro 2012 will have 5 mountain stages, 4 of which are MTFs. But all these stages are harder than those of 2011. The overall difficulty of the Giro seems to be comparable, if not higher, than the last one. What makes this Giro more human, in the eyes of the organisers, are probly the 7 flat stages and the very easy first week.
Like many past Giros, the key will be the very last week, with three murderous stages that could make meaningless all the rest of the race.
But let's go stage by stage:
Stage 1: the prologue
Stage 2-3: Flat stages, most likely they'll finish with bunch sprints. GC guys will have to care about crosswinds and crashes.
Stage 4: Team Time Trial, very important for the GC as those with a good team could gain a lot of time on their oppponents
Stage 5: Other bunch sprint
Stage 6: Hilly stage, with a hard first half (with a stretch of sterrato in) and a lot of little walls in the final. It could likely be taken by a breakaway.
Stage 7: First "MTF", very long and easy. Probly the contenders will stare at each other and an outsider will win.
Stage 8: It's not a mountain stage but it will be very demanding. The final climb could provide a good entertainment between the main favourites.
Stage 9: Flat stage with some interesting bumps in the end. Imho it's NOT gonna finish with a bunch sprint.
Stage 10: Uphill finish. Purito FTW.
Stage 11: Longest stage with a bump in the end. Really don't know what to expect.
Stage 12: Short and stressful stage, where a GC guy could gain or lose much
Stage 13: Bunch sprint. Sprinters to leave the race after this.
Stage 14: First and easiest high mountain stage. Probly 6-7 favourites to decide the winner by a sprint. No time bonuses though.
Stage 15: Other mountain stage, very interesting to see how the race unfolds.
Stage 16: Easy stage with a wall in the end. An attacker FTW.
Stage 17: The only non-MTF mountain stage. Very hard day in the dolomites. Most likely the peloton will explode on the Giau, but there is room to attack before.
Stage 18: Bunch sprint, but who will take it, as the sprinters will be gone?
Stage 19: The hardest stage of the race. I fully expect the race to explode from the Passo Di Pampeago already.
Stage 20: Two scenarios: 1) There are 5 minutes between each GC guy, and a breakaway will be free to take it. The leaders will attack on the final stretch of the Stelvio and that's all. 2) The GC is still open and it will be epicness overloaded.
Stage 21. Meaningless ITT

yes I'm interested too. I don't think he will deliver but who knows.

Stranger things have happened, he claims that the course suits him too. Plenty time to ride into some kind of form too

I think it will be a great gt. The gc candidates will show themselves on the early hill stages, then rest a bit and go absolutely wild in the mountains.

No Contador like character to ruin the competition.

Everything is up for grabs. 1st place could go to anyone from about 4 or 5 names.

Podium theres about 10 people who one would not be surprised if they finished on podium, and even the competition for top 10 is hot.

Fight for stages will be good too.

And points and mountains. No one has a clue who will win those.

Flat stages, not all of them will be exciting, but i think stage 3 as its WW rememberance, some people will be extra motivated to make the break succeed could be good.
Stage 13 its the last sprinters stage, im interested to see if Cav can get over that early mountain/ hill.

Theres stage 18 sprinters stage after everyone has been eliminated, so that will be interesting.

And there are 2 sprinters stages i think with a hill within the last 10k or so, again wondering how they will go.

As for the GC stages, fuggedaboudid.

Total destruction. 1 of either 14 or 15 will be carnage, hopefully both.

17 is the best profile a gt stage has had in a long time, 19 is like Gardeccia last year and 20 is even worse.

Any one of those last 3 could end up as stage of the decade.

The fear is that either 19 or 20 will be raced easy like Sestrieres last year or Gavia the year before.

Well the great thing is that with so many contenders, we will only need 1 to be determined on any one of these stages, to ensure against riders taking it easy on those stages. Could be Rujano showing he is nuts, could be J Rod trying to get onto the podium, getting form in the last week having sucked in the first 2, could be Basso and Scarponi getting last week form, could be Liqui sending Szmyd up the road if they are willing to try him as a Nibali.

Could be a break of riders 15 minutes down going hard, forcing the teams to ride hard to keep the gap.

Actually I think with 20, we will get a spectacle no matter what as people will want the Cimma Coppi and the highest ever stage win.
