What a riot......in a sport where most of the participants would pump any chemical known to man into their body if they thought it would make then faster and stronger. Coming from Riis.....especially funny, given is own experience with substance abuse and the notion that he didn't know a thing about Tyler's doping program.

They must be the slowest drinkers ever, unless they were at a strip club with a two drink minimum.

Two drink maximum maybe :)

I like that he says "like people do in Spain". Well, most people in Spain don't have to do 200k next day. And, yes, probably half the Spanish peloton does it and the Italian peloton drag the podium girls to their rooms - but that doesn't mean it's the done thing on Saxo... "Sorry Bjarne, but the other guys did it and we didn't want to feel left out!... It's so unfair! - I'm telling Kim"

The no more than two beers quote came from Andy. When they said they went out after dinner, it sounded like right after dinner, why else use it as a milestone? You can only nurse two beers for so long, so unless there's entertainment, who sits there after they've stopped drinking so they can get back to the hotel at one in the morning?

That could be. But based on other Vuelta results, Cancellara should have come in another five minutes behind them. :D

A late dinner in Spain can finish well past midnight. If not, it's not late by Spanish standards.

But they have a regular team dinner at the hotel, on their own schedule. They're not tourists.

Getting back to the hotel at one in the morning after posting nine stages of crappy results means you're not trying. Andy bragged all along how he was dedicated to help Frank win, and that he's just coming into form.

Well, the teetotalling faction of the team are mostly autobus denizens.

How hard are they not trying?

What a load of rubbish ! Rijs wins the Tour on drugs and kicks two of his top riders out for having a drink ! If they'd won a stage they'd have had champagne. I think its because they are leaving his team for next year.

Pathetic.
well when you cheat you are trying to win, in a dubiuos way but winning after all. when you get wasted during a race it is the opposite. it is not caring at all.

Mr 60%

Looks like Riis is back to his Mr 60% nickname, as he only has 60% of his team left in the Vuelta!

I think there was no "night out" - I think the real (non)story is about Cancellara... Remember Bjarne was going there to discuss the future with FC. My bet is Bjarne missed FC, was panicking because he was sitting in the hotel bar waiting for the taxi to take him back to the aiport and had to let some steam off. In walks poor innocent O'Grady and Schleck the Younger chatting about the possibility of maybe sharing one of the little bottles in the hotel fridge after the Vuelta is all done. Bjarne let's rip and throws them out of the of the race... Bjarne is relaxed again, but still never got to speak to Fabian.

They dragged their asses in at 5 AM, and Andy Schleck lied to the press about it. Next question, since we know Andy's story knocked 4 hours off the time, how long did the two beers last?

"They haven't respected the rules of the team," Riis said after the stage. "Whether it's one glass or ten, at 5 a.m., it's inexcusable. I've done what I had to do. The rules of the team are the same for everyone. We are professionals and we have to act professionally. I had to take this decision. It's up to them to assume the consequences of what they've done."

seriously, who here believes that it was only 2 drinks?

Oh, everybody I think... there's a pattern going here:

Ivan Basso, ex-rider for Riis: "I did get blood taken out, but I never used it."

Frank Schleck, coming ex-rider for Riis: "I wired the money to Fuentes, but I never used whatever it was I bought."

Andy Schleck, also coming ex-rider for Riis: "We did buy the beers, but we never drank them"

Bill Clinton, not a rider for Riis: "I did try Marijuana, but I never inhaled"

All sounds regular to me...

Sounds like BR made the right call. My guess is that even if he hadn't pulled them, they wouldn't have been of much use to the team coming in at that hour.

The issue is that they were out til 5 am. Andy tried to deflect the real issue by bringing up the "2 drink" statement. Of course he failed to mention how late they were out, almost like a typical teenager, except he's in his mid-twenties and can't man-up to his mistake. He would've been better served by not commenting at all.
