Anyone think that Contador goes in the break again today?

I hope that he tries to. It's an interesting stage, and the rest day immediately follows.

There is a long distance between the two category 1 climbs of the day, but if guys such as GVA and Gilbert get into the break, then the move will be a strong one. I don't think that Quintana will try anything today as it is not quite mountainous enough for him, plus he is also too close to yellow. But I really think that Alberto should - if he has the legs - try something on today's stage. He might be able to get back another couple of minutes.

You have yelliw.

Would you want Alberto Contador within 2 minutes with the Galibier stage still to come

Also, Sunweb will try to control this for Matthews

He won't last the Galibier stage. Couple of stages ago was fine for him and his attack, it was only 100k.

Likely, though I would never want to risk that with Alberto Contador.

I agree, he's got close enough for the main GC to start to take notice again so he will be given no leeway. He should have lost a lot more time in past stages so he would have been given the chance for a stage win. The Galibier stage would have been great for him to win if only he was far enough back to not bother the main men.

You never know, if he collapses on Galibier, maybe he will get the chance the net day.

Great to see Landa and Contador-bromance. Its so much Quintana just to stay out of all that. :D

On Galibier, if he hadn't attacked beforehand (which has probably has been), it could to interesting to see him replicate his Galibier-assault one more time like in 2007 and 2011. He has some good memories about this climb. But I think this stage will expose once again that he isn't that great on these types of mountain stages. He doesn't have that much left after hard tempo riding all day, it zaps him.

I thought Berto looked pretty good today, he is clearly improving :) however it will be tough to win a stage in the Alps with the current time gaps, they won't let him ride and the stages are too perfect for Sky IMO. Stage 17 will likely go to a break, 18 to the strongest GC contender.

He will do an alliance with quintana, the problem is quintana is too cooked at the moment

I can see those 2 getting some room to go on a break. I don't think they will consider either to be a threat to the GC, so maybe they can do something fun. Unfortunately I don't see Contador winning a stage this year. He may be instrumental in stirring up the GC battle (I hope!), but it looks like not much more can happen. I just hope he gets through the whole race without any more crashes.

Is he planning to do the Vuelta? What about World Champs this year?

Quintana, at little over 2 minutes, no threat to GC

I mean, wat?
So I hadn't watched the stage today, reading the stage thread now.

Quintana got wrecked by AG2R dom's.

Wat?

Why would he forge an alliance with Quintana?
I mean, why wouldn't he? They are in the exact same position. Contador going up the road alone wont lead to anything now that Landa most probably won't join in. Then you have Barguil. The big question in Quintana's legs tho.

Neither I'd say, although I guess his team may want him to ride the Vuelta.
I think it depends a lot on how he fares in the Alps. If he recovers more and leaves the Tour on a relative high I could see him racing decently in the latter part of the year.

I think it would be better for Contador to go up the road with a GC contender so he can work with them and go for the stage uncontested. If Alberto and Nairo go up the road they would both be looking for a stage. Still could happen, but going with a GC contender would give him better odds of a stage win.
