Contador was at home with a fissure of about 5 cm in his tibia, team doctor Piet de Moor says. TCS has done everything to get him at the start in Spain, says De Jongh. "For Alberto, there's not a bigger motivation than his home tour. He was off the bike for 15 days, but his level at the Tour was so high that the decline wasn't very big. Alberto is an exceptional talent, also when it comes to recovery. He has worked with electrostimulation a lot, because we were afraid he'd lose some muscle strength. And we've used a device that helps the healing of wounds and tissue. A bodytherapist was with him 24/7 to treat him because his back, neck and hip hurt."

On yesterdays' stage, the amount of times that Contador looked behind looking for Froome was akin to Andy looking for Frank.
Let's hope that Contador hasn't burned too much energy up at trying to drop Froome and wheelsucking Purito and Valverde.

Dr. Juice said:Yeah and people use that as an excuse to throw in the room the usual " Contador hasn't shown sustained attacks since 2011 " which is bull****. He was at his 2011 form this year, if not better. There was 1 bad year, the other 6 years he was the boss. Now he comes off a fractured tibia with 2 weeks zero training + another 10 days light intensity due to pain and still is way better than 2013, probably 2012 level.
Regarding the GC battle : Monte Castrove is a 100 % win for Valverde. Cat 2 climb, probably a bunch of riders together at the end. Alberto has to drop him today. This is THE day.
It would have been the same at La Vuelta's. Since his injury wasn't as bad as everybody thought, right? Your own words.LaFlorecita said:Contador was at his best this year. He just didn't get to show it at the Tour which is a huge shame.

2012: No stronger than V and R. Well short of his old level.
2013: Annihilated by the Dawg. Beaten by others.
2014: Early indications looked promising, yet here we are at the Vuelta and he's still only marginally better than V and R, reminiscent of 2012.
His saving grace is that there is evidence you can't carry over your Tour peak to the Vuelta, even if little energy is expended: Froome is well short of his best too, despite better preparation.
I do hope Contador can produce his best in next year's Tour. But until he does, we can't be certain he can return to his old level. And, if the Dauphine is an indication, his best might not even be good enough against a charging Dawg.
