Weren't all the big guns there this year?

Quintana, Contador, Kreuziger and Froome were missing. Rodriguez wasn't aiming for GC and not in form because of crashes.

That means number one, two, three, four and five of the Tour last year were not there or in bad shape (Rodriguez).

No, none of the big guns were there except Nibali.

It was the weakest Tour since 2006.

Not at the end of the race which is what counts.

Who guarantees they'll be there (by your understanding of the preposition) next year?

Read posts carefully, he said "If the big guns are there". Yea there's a good chance some will crash or not be there, but that doesn't happen each year.

Of course every year some crash but usually the biggest guys don't crash out, this year was an exception.

Now you should go back and read carefully.
By "there" I consider starting a race, and they consider finishing.
Do we really have to go through the discussion about crashing and staying on the bike again?

2014 Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali, Pinot, Peraud, plus Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano), Cadel Evans (BMC) and Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) all attended the presentation, along with UCI President Brian Cookson. Alberto Contador was absent after undergoing minor surgery on the leg he injured in this year's Tour de France, while Chris Froome was in Britain for a Team Sky get together.

So who has info on this 'minor surgery'?

It's amputation. They're trying to minimize injury risk in the future. Less legs = less injuries.
"Minor surgery" 'cause he basically doesn't need two legs to win a GT.

Let me word it this way: If AC, Nibali, Froome, and Quintana all finish the Tour they will be in front of Bardet and Pinot in the final GC. That is what was meant by the last several posts.

I read on twitter he is having a fatty cyst removed from the same leg…not sure it is accident related, might just be a lipoma (my brother has one - the doctor says its something that happens as men get older, for some reason. God knows where Contador gets the fat from for it to form though. Might make him lose another kilo…!)

Shouldn't be a big deal if that's what it is. Probably do it under local unless it a. massive, or b. deep. But from my understanding, they are usually just under the skin so healing should be pretty rapid.

Aaahhh... I'm getting it!
So, if they finish - they'll finish in front.
Don't they have to finish the race first, so we can say where they've finished?
Like this year, for example.

Yep, correct

Vaguely underwhelmed by the TdF route…not that I like the ITT much, but it's pretty short…hardly worth it. Ups the chances of Froome doing the Giro, do we think? Or not?

Hope AC gets some cobbles practice...

Thanks! Fatty deposits in men getting older. Yikes!!! Better get that double next year :).

Yeah, I think Froome will ride Il Giro. I should hope so, at least. Alberto's chances of doing the double have decreased massively anyway, so I'd rather see a good fight at the Giro, then, and have them both skip the Tour.

He's had plenty of cobbles practice, we can only hope it doesn't rain, if the cobbles are dry he might limit his losses.

in fairness, I believe these thing can form as some kind of protection after an injury, though they don't have to ? I think he's got a few years in him yet, if his motivation holds.

But I'll be off to watch the Giro and the Tour next year for certain.

I'm guessing Froome will still be targeting the Tour as no. 1 - whether it suits him or not, it's suits Team Sky's target audience much better. they are not a media company for nothing. But I can't see them going 'all eggs in one basket' again...

Giro will be the race to watch next year, I reckon. I have no problem with TdF including cobbles and so on, but feels like they haven't balanced the route with other skills as much as they might have. Feels like there are very few stages that really will sort the pack out unless bad weather / bad luck comes into it…

Here's hoping that there'll be some death or glory long distance attempts to animate things.
