What is it that Simoni did in the 2004 Giro ? I remember the stage when he let Cunego go up the road (like Hinault did with Lemond when he crashed in St Etienne) when he likely could have stayed with him or at least not lost several minutes. Was he marking Honshar or maybe Popovych ? Bad tactic for sure...Then he attacked Cunego a couple of times, including once with Garzellei, and accused him of riding behind him when he got caught, hehe...

I don't miss Simoni. Bullheaded and...won 2 Giro with average opponents. Then you look up the climbing times from Alpe di Pampeago and realise he climbed as fast in 2003 as in 1999 when he got destroyed by Pantani.
He was a strong climber like Ivan Gotti but that's it.

He attacked on the last road stage with Garzelli, at the beginning of the stage (on the Mortirolo, with Vivione and Presolana left)... it was a very short stage so the similarities between his action and AC's are quite impressive. But Simoni's action was more effective, since at least Garzelli won the stage :p

Thanks, I had looked it up in the meantime and it was actually the previous day that he complained about Cunego riding to catch him. Interestingly enough the day Cunego took off, Simoni said he hoped the team (Mazzolini first in line...) would be as strong at the TDF where he was planning to take on Armstrong, whatever happened to that claim ! Of course the best ever long range attack we got to witness was Landis in 2006, unfortunately it didn't stand the test of time but that was truly mind boggling to watch, even more than Hinault's raids in 1986.

:) very well said. I could not have said it better

Alberto+Contador+Rogers.JPG

Alberto apologized to Rogers, he said he couldn't continue, and Rogers said - you don't have to apologize, you've done nothing but make us proud.

That quote and picture still cuts to the quick…how anyone honestly believed that he wasn't that badly hurt doesn't have the first idea about the man.

As for that interview…There are very few people that the more I read about, or hear from, the more I both admire and like. He manages to avoid arrogance, false modesty or faux humility. He's generous to his rivals without pretending he doesn't know he's capable of beating every one. I never have the impression he's 'on message' or insincerely following the party line or PR blurb.

I know I m biased, but I too hate to think of the day he retires, because there'll be a huge Contador shaped hole in the peloton for some time. Riche Porte said it at the T-A last year - having Contador back in form was really good for cycling. People of Contador's calibre - and not just as a cyclist - don't come around that much.

At the risk of sounding like a hideous fan-gurl, isn't it his birthday tomorrow??

Think so, funny thing that it coincides with the birthday of a spanish saint who's known in the Netherlands for giving lot's of gifts. (Lol, Giro 2011)

More than almost anything - aside from his actually doing the double - I really want everyone who wrote him off in 2013 to have to eat their words. More than just the win, that's why the Vuelta this year was so sweet for me - the British press can be unendurably snide. The commentators are almost as bad; they're so biased. It was supremely satisfying watching AC climb and then leave Froome behind on the Queen stage and 20. I was pleased the Roger Hammond in the wrap up interviews was straight-forward about the severity of their respective injuries and potential recovery, and didn't just make endless excuses or hint that AC couldn't have been that hurt, as others I read/saw at the time did.

Seeing ACs achievements in black and white versus his rivals in that article just brings home the extraordinary arrogance and hubris of those who wrote him off. Nice to hear him put it into perspective. Sounds like this year has done as lot to put any remaining questions AC might have to bed.

I disagree, Contador made sure AS didn't win the tour by making that move. He completely blew himself up by following Contador. He was way too confused on Contador when he was actually irrelevant.

Costing AS a possible tour victory is way way more effective.

Maybe Valverde got inspired this year on that Contador 'strategy'.

It wasn't a strategy from Contaador, he prob could care less who wins if he doesn't but it was a nice aftereffect of what happened.

Maybe at the 2015 Tour start:)

I'll go there as well and then I'll force you through the crowds toward the Tinkoff bus holding a sign high with the text "THE BIGGEST CONTADOR FAN EVER" with a big arrow pointing at you and then he will certainly come over for a chat and a signature or maybe even more.

I'm 2,02 mtr so there is no way they won't see me and then I'll get him to you ;)

You'll still get ignored. You have to hold a sign that states that she is the biggest Oleg Tinkov fan 4vah who have posters of him on the wall. Then you'll get in. ;)
