im gonna take a look in our local shop over the next few days just to get some ideas, they are 99% trek, which i dont know how i feel about it, but if anyone knows of some good treks, or even some BAD treks, would be interesting to know.. something about a trek just doesnt appeal to me.. i dont know why.. over here they seem to be a bit of a rich lawyer or banker bike for showing off, and not much else..

:D - not rich, not showing off, but this might be getting a little close for comfort

Actually, they make nice road and mountain bikes. You probably have to pay for the name (unless your shop also offers steep discounts like mine did) and I have no idea how they compare for cross or hybrids.

at the moment my heart is heading towards specialized.. seen a couple of things i like depending on if i go with drops or flat handlebars..

however, my heart is leading towards drops, and probably a cross bike..
i dont want a road bike, mainly because of some of the terrain round here, and i always promised when i did buy a new bike it wasnt going to be drops, i dont trust myself to be out on it 8 hours a day..

but the more i look at stuff, and looking at it realistically as i will have the money fairly soon, my heart cant tear itself away from drop handlebars and a cross bike may be the only solution..

will know what my budget is in the next two weeks (redundancy sunday but it depends on holiday owed etc), basically subract £1500 for next summers holiday, and divide the rest in two, one half for me and a bike, one half for the wifes last few driving lessons and a crap car..

so anyway.. cross bike.. heart is set.. so anything suitable that comes up.. sub £800 but i do really want to buy a garmin even if its a second hand £100 one.. :D

options at the minute

raleigh airlight £650

Specialized Tricross £700

Kona Jake - £750 (must be able to find it cheaper)

Kona Dewdrop - have found for as littl as £400 leavs cash for upgrades

i cant find a cannondal or trek cross bike in the uk for under a grand..

i think i am sold on the dewdrop.. i can find one in the uk for about £450 which for the spec offers nearly as much as the more expensive bikes.. and leaves me about £350 on my budget for extras, decent lock, pedals, odd sundries and my garmin that ive dreamt of..

now just need to money, and hoping if it arrives in january i may be able to pick up a garmin, and bits on ebay in the "unwanted xmas present" section..

Have you looked at the Kona Dew Drop? It's a hybrid with drop bars. We sell a few of them, cheaper than a cross bike or a classic tourer but still rideable in a headwind.

http://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=dewdrop

Don't know what they cost in England but should be near your budget.

whats the gear shifters on the dew drop.. its not clear from the picture and it just says shimano on the specs..

They're just the 2300 "non-series" levers.

ok... well here comes the moral dilemma..

one of my local shops stocks the kona range.. including the jake, and they can get the dew drop... trouble is of course the sell on list price..

so they want
£750 for the jake (£599 online at evans)
£650 for the dewdrop (£449 online at ribble)

now, im happy to support my local bikeshop, prefer buying it locally for any problems, and also for sizing etc.. but.. £150-£200 price difference (or 25%) i cant justify...

so its wait till the cheque arrives in dec/january and see just what price they are willing to go to.. i think if they can manage to split the difference £650 jake, or £550 dewdrop then they should have a deal

Dim, don't know if your lbs will play ball but i often find that if i go and say 'i can get this for 'x' elsewhere - will you do it at that price?' that more often than not, the answer is yes! try it, you might be pleasantly surprised. :)

thats the plan... im just waiting on the money today.. saw the jake today and im in love with it.. i did kinda want discs, but i can live without them.
interestingly the guy in the shop has a edge 705 he is looking to sell...

so.. if they can bring the jake down from 750 to somewhere around the 650 mark (v 600 online) and he wants to flog his edge for 150 then they have a deal..

i just waiting for the money now.. redundant from sunday, apparently the administrators have been pretty hot on sending the paperwork out (cos we have to claim redundancy from the government.. some people who where made redundant last week have already had the forms.. so could even have the money before Christmas)..

so it looks like im down to a straight toss up between the dew drop and the jake.. partly cash based, partly down to which is the better option...

so

jake v dewdrop.. thoughts?

the main difference is the tiagra groupset on the jake v deore, cantis as opposed to discs, and much tighter road gearing
jake - 50/39/30 12-25 9 Speed
dew - 48/38/28 11-34 8 Speed

the legs arent what they where but i shouldnt have any problems turning the jake round...

the only slight temptation is as well, that ive looked and locally there is a fairly good cross season in the winter.. i will be 39 this year so by winter 2011 i would be eligable for Veterans (although looking the vetarans are beating the seniors most of the time).. i guess this is where the wifes car will come in if she passes her test.. :D the wifes comment.. hmm.. ok.. as long as i can take a flask of tea... damn. this place.. i said i wasnt going to do any racing again.. :/

Dim, once you succumb to the dark side, you know there's no going back! Fwiw, i'm 39 too, raced cross for the first time last year and loved it. Can't wait til next season where the races are 40 minutes instead of an hour!!!! :D

If it were me, I'd go for the Jake. You did say in an earlier post that you might like to make the occasional foray off-road and the Jake gives you that option. The triple chainring gives you the granny option when the going gets really steep too. 30/25 is pretty low. I haven't ridden a gear that low since my mtb days - 39/26 gets me over 2-3 km 20%+ power climbs easily although i might look for more rear teeth in the pyrenees!

i only swore i wasnt going back to road racing.. doing a bit of cross wouldnt really be racing, more like a 1 hour training session..

the jake v dewdrop will probably come down to price..

the gearing on either will be fine, although i prefer the jakes, but on the dew its always something changeable.. the only really question is the decision over discs or not.. it may come down to something technical like panniers, i will occasionally need to have them if the wife and i go on holiday with the bikes. then again, if she can pass her test and get a car panniers arent so important, shes happy carrying the day gear we need in hers.

im 38 for another 3 weeks btw.. :D relative youngster..

just need the money now.. im impatient.. :D

Cheers dim,
The Jake looks good as a multi-use bike, with fender mounts and all. I currently have a rack and child seat on the back of my Cross bike. They can carry some weight when needed, but the short wheelbase gets twitchy with a load on the back (my sone is approaching 35 lbs). You will want the Canti brakes if you do decide to race.

I'll see you at 39 for a week or two, before I slip into the next decade.

Let us know what you end up with. Pictures required.

Dim...I know a few folks who have the Kona Jake...they really love it...I think it's a great choice...having trouble justifying the extra cash then I would drop the garmin thingy...but it's a really fine bike that guys I know seem to love...I have tried and they are really something...

i came in £70 over budget, but i did buy the garmin, some new more weather suitable gear and a few odds and sods like new lights, spd's, as the old bike will still be in use, so no light or pedal stealing :/ and a giro...

so all in all not bad..

got the 2009 at a fairly bargain price, i think another month and i would have been forced into paying an extra £100 for the 2010, so thanks to the redundancy service in this country for being so efficient..

now its sabotage bits from the old one so the missus can have its computer and a few other bits n bobs.. that will be the shopping bike from now on

Nice looking bike:cool:

You just need to remove the useless reflectors and the dork disk and you are ready to go.

agreed - that's clean!

i was checking the legal business over the reflectors first.. bikes over here are supplied with them and there is some law so i was checking...

turns out the law is

wheel reflectors can go...
front and rear lights are compulsory by law
pedal reflectors are compulsory by law (work that one out with spd's)
rear reflectors must be supplied and are law that you must have one (however, some recent law says that if youre lights flash you can dispense with your reflector, but not if your light is solid)..

weird weird laws...

the reflectors go tommoro..
the idiot disc goes when i can be bothered..
