Seems just a little dismissive. Races after the Giro will clarify whether that was a big win or not.

Just being realistic.

It's a great result for him. It may spur him on to greater confidence and performance.

But judging the performance as distinct from the result, it did not yet show the ability to beat Cav when he's going well. Or if it did, everyone else in the sprint bar Cav all had a sudden progression together...

As other threads will show, I suspect when that happens it will be Guardini or a similar proper sprinter (read, midget) to do it, rather than one of the cobbles/TT riders playing at sprinting.

I think WS is just referring to their build - Chicchi, Napolitano, McEwen etc. just look like sprinters. I don't hink bodyshape is the deciding factor of riding style though.

e.g. for quite a while it was Petacchi who was most capable of beating Cav and he's tallish and not that heavy (I think).

Since when are midgets like Cav the proper build of a sprinter?

IDK. I suppose when you think of short sprinters they tend to be the ones considered to have a good jump though.

You obviously havent been watching much this season. He hasn't just won one sprint. He's been on fire since January.

Sprinting isn't just Grand Tours....

Yes. You are right AND a couple of thoughts spring to mind... firstly I was only really thinking of GT sprinting and Cav has been effective in the past in other types of race. Secondly haven't we seen other "sprinters" come on to the scene but then fall by the wayside.

It just seems a little early to pronounce 'the king is dead - long live the (new) king'. But we will see.

Please dont hear me say that it isnt great to have exciting new talent in the sport - it definately makes it a better sport.

Of course this is explicitly a thread for hype, and not entirely serious in tone. End of the day even if Guardini were to prove in the future he was generally equal to Cav in terms of speed, it would be a very long time until he matched his palmares. So Cav's still top boy for the forseeable future.
