I hate this thread more than I have hated any troll thread on this forum. I feel dirty posting here.

Let it die. Please, let it die.
Actually, I'm going to keep it going. This will serve as a reminder to people why it is that people such as Ross and Jonathan from Science of Sport, Myles and Andy from Bike Pure, numerous others with science backgrounds, or pro racers we used to converse with and got key information from, rarely post here anymore and probably have been driven from the site all together.

More than any other, this thread and the OP's first post exemplifies what this forum has become.

Greg Lemond also used to work with Andy on gaining some muscle mass early in his pro career - his metabolism was too high (like lots of naturally skinny kids). It's not unusual for these riders to gain some bulk later in their career as their metabolism slows down.

Andy was also raised by two PHd granola genius parents. They weren't into body building nutritiona and, believe it or not; the dude didn't eat a ton of protein (like meat) until Lemond's diet influenced him. Kinda like a delayed puberty. He also trained 700 miles per week to get ready for early Tours 'cause no one told him he would lose weight over the course of the race. His brother, Steve, was a really good chef until they decided to build bikes. He can still cook but he was the eater, Andy the rider. Add the jaw surgery, maturation and you have the guy you see. He was one of the last honest phenoms.

This is like one of those before and after pictures used to market diets where the person has been photographed from a different angle, and with different lighting, in other words meaningless. And in this case he's older in the second shot.

Thanks to Squampton and Masteresracer for the information. I thought he must of had something done. He looks so different.

Why are some people flipping out and calling me a troll? I just wanted to know what happened to the guy that's all. I'm genuinely interested. Relax.

Hello forum,

Considered joining for a while and finally made the leap.

Bring on the rear only STI shifter coupled with a front down-tube shifter, those were the days.

Ah, no. Two downtube shifters, friction only, none of this "indexed" garbage.

I still feel that variable gears are only for people over 45. Isn’t it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailleur?

I resent the ageism you are exhibiting here (yes, I'm not under 45). :D
Ever seen someone who's been riding a track bike for "a long time?" Give them the right single gear and it's poetry in motion.

Oh, and to the OP: how many years and miles between the two pictures for Andy? I'd posit that anyone riding even just half that amount would show at least a little physical development, even a hack like me. As for the allergic reaction to bee stings, I know from personal experience how bad it can get; yes, I'm allergic. Got shots for at least 5 years growing up to give me some kind of immune response. Got stung once on a finger, whole arm swelled up until my bicep looked like Davis Phinney's quad.

Apologies to anyone offended by this topic. That wasn't my intention at all. To be honest I was more interested by his change of facial appearance, which mastersracer and squampton answered for me. Thanks.

I'm confused. I've been reading up about Andy Hampsten recently, wanting to find out about his career and acheivements and what kind of guy he was and I stumble across this picture:

hamp_01.jpg

Okay, so he was a blonde-haired, buck-toothed, thin climber type. I then go to his wikipedia page. I click the picture:

What? Is this the same guy? is it some kind of optical illusion? Did he start doing roids in the nineties? I'm lost. Can someone fill me in?

Great post. Whether you are serious or not, I think it is a brilliant s**** of the post about the pictures of Armstrong as evidence of his doping. (Edit: it looks like the filter didn't like the word s p o o f. Strange.)

i don't see why you guys are upset about this thread. most threads in this forum follow this simple formula:

1. pick a rider (alberto, lance, hero from yesteryear, today's stage winner, etc.)
2. observe something about that rider
3. conclude this as evidence of potential doping
4. somehow relate this to lance armstrong!

i will write a quick one, although you will find examples of this everyday.

"remy digregorio came in 32nd on today's flat stage. looks suspicious enough for me to imply here that he is on drugs. i wish they would bottle lance's ball sweat and make a cologne."

or

"alberto contador performed his morning bowel movement today at 7:30, a half hour later than his usual time! clearly he is on the juice! lance poops at the exact same time everyday. and his farts smell nice too. alberto has a lot to learn."

Funny, the only 3 people to mention Armstrong's name are fanboys. Nice strawman argument there guys! You are the ones that cannot live without talking about him. Irony, once again, the bane of the fanboy's existence.

Hey, I'm no Armstrong fanboy. I just come to the Clinic for entertainment and the odd posting when I am amused.

Okay, so it was 2 of the 3. And actually, your comment was the only insightful one of the bunch.

Nor me. In fact I "sidegraded" to a compact chainset a year or so ago, so I'm even more of a cheat.

Didn't you get the Henri Desgrange reference? That statement was from him.

I did; I was thinking about trying to find a picture of Bartali and other strongmen walking their bikes up one of the cobbled climbs :)

Oh, I did the compact a bit ago, but not completely: 12x25 in back 38/52 in front. For the life of me I can't get comfortable with a 53.

Um, stupid thread, I agree. IIRC Hampsten had jaw surgery beginning/mid of his career to correct bite and breathing issues: it did radically change the look of his face. I bet he's just stewing right now (and biting his tongue) about all that's happening - him and Steve Bauer; two of the clean guys who unfortunately have to protect their Giro/TdF tour companies and their contacts with the ProTour folks...

Hampsten, especially, has been pretty unfiltered...
