This, exactly.

Think back to January when he finished dead last on every stage Down Under and compare it to now, it's like night and day. I think the most important is that he finished the race and evidently gave it everything, even going into the break twice. But it was also obvious that he is still a ways away from climbing with the best such as Van Garderen or Acevedo in this case.

I was also positively suprised by his ITT. I did not see the stage but people said he looked like he gave it everything. It was his first ITT in 11 months if I am not mistaken, he said he barely trained on the TT bike due to his injury and a large part of it was flat and windy. It didn't see the splits, i.e. how his time up the climb compared to the rest, does anyone have that? It is by no means a brilliant performance but I think we could have expected much worse than this.

As for the Tour I don't care for the result, I only wish to see him in good shape and up there with the best sometimes, and why not give it a shot for stage glory. I am hoping to see him go for it on Mont Ventoux à la Virenque, that will be epic

I'm not saying that he is going to win the Tour but did he not place 2nd in his first ever GT? He never had a GT in his legs at that stage and had no experience in three week races. He's a beast.

It's a shame that he has decided he can't win TDF this year but hopefully he can avoid accidents in the first week and find himself in a position like Evans in the current Giro:). The belief may come then, and I am of the opinion that Andys recovery abilities are the best in the Peleton

Ride the tour for form, drop time and play with KOM, possibly net a stage doing so. Then Vuelta and Worlds, this is the best worlds climbers in a while.
KOM is impossible for Andy unless he drops loads of time first, he'll be an unknown until he's 30 minutes down and not given any lattitude.

I doubt this scenario. If Andy can win a stage, he can win the Tour. He has never really been inconsistent, although he is only competitive in a few races. I'm not sure, however, that he'll be winning any stages or competing with the best on the hardest mountains.

i think the best thing for Andy's career would be to move back to Saxo bank with Riis.

You can never convince him to only ride the Giro and Vuelta and let Berto ride for the Tour with or without him as dom. But no doubt it was exactly what he should do, win a couple of Giro´s or Vuelta´s first.

But good to see he´s progressing, I´m sure he will find his old form.

I think his problem will be the third week. The longest he has raced in over one year was 8 (?) days in California, so I think by the time we hit the third week the wheels will come off.

Stage win might also be tough. Breakaway chances are always low for everyone and if it's not from a breakaway it will depend on the good will of Froome or Wiggins, whoever will be conducting the Sky express

Looks like Andy just became a double GT winner :D

This is of course clinic material so mods might delete this but I remember reading somewhere that in the 2007 Giro, Di Luca had "the hormone levels of a 13 year old" (don't remember the source though)

/edit: There is a reference about it in the front page article

Won't delete but won't let it develop either. Take any more on this to Clinic.

Keep these updates coming Christian, regardless how you get them.

At least Andy is doing what we all expect of a contender. I don't think the TD Suisse or the Dauphine have ever been more keenly anticipated as a TDF guide over the years I've been following cycling.

It will tell us a lot but not everything. Nibali is a good example at last year's Dauphine. Completely invisible there but the only one able to give Sky something to worry about in July.

Weather all week for Mont Ventoux area is between 15-20 degrees. I don't know how it was yesterday and I am sure it will be cold at the top but this sure doesn't seem like terrible weather

From what i've seen this season, Andy is getting better. But i have my strong doubts he could be a contender for the victory in France. I want first to see him finishing with the top group on a mountain stage. Maybe in Suisse.

Funny you should say that. Just today I get a text message from my dad who is doing a cycling trip in Southwest France, saying he spotted Andy and two other Radioshack riders near Quillan. This means today they are reconnoitring stage 8, Castres -> Ax 3 Domaines. Quillan is just before the HC Col de Pailhères (2001m). Weather according to my dad: rain and snow
