Yea you´re right. Just watched some 2010 footage and he indeed started pedaling with a heavier gear. But especially in 2011 it just did not look efficient at all.. I kinda hope that Bruyneel convinces Andy to use a higher cadence

Everything is gonna be alright. I think Andy is able to get away from Wiggins and Menchov even using a 53 gear. :) :D Though, undoubtedly effectiveness of work suffers from it a lot, especially explosiveness.

lol! Well yea he builds up a lot more lactic acid when using those heavy gears. I´m not saying he should go Armstrong junior style and go up mountains with 100rpm, but a bit higher rpm then last year would be better I think

Exactly. In 2011 Andy began to pedal in the manner time trialists use to salvage themselves on the climbs. When they were passing Tourmalet, I thought he was about to be dropped and only then realized that was the way he usually worked. :) Though in general his style is far away from to be considered ergonomical and rather built on unique abilities of the cardiovascular system.

If I recall correctly he altered his training to allow himself to gain more explosiveness in his accelerations, this after the 2009 Tour. Due IMO in large part to alow him to match/counter Contador's accelerations. In 2009, Contador was able to create a gap quickly on Andy, build on it to a certain degree and then hold that gap to the finish.

I remember like 1/2 weeks before the 2011 tdf Andy gave a interview to Cyclingnews. In that interview he stated that he would use a fluid pedaling style, and even said his rpm would be close to that of Lance. Was kinda funny when i saw him riding up mountains like he was Ullrich lol :D Will be interesting to see which cadence he chooses to use this year. His hearth/lungs capacity are obviously superb, so pedaling with 90 rpm should be no problem

hmm okay interesting. Maby the high cadence was in fact to much of a strain on his heart/lungs, and therefore choose to use a heavier gear. That would lower his HR, but build up more lactic acid. I kinda doubt that though coz Andy's heart/lungs are obviously way above average pro cyclist.

Lol, Andy confirms his unsurpassed class as a master of subtle intrigues. :D We can only speculate how far he was from super peak form сlimbing this way.

I think Contador's out of the saddle climbing and Petacchi's smooth sprinting style are the most beautiful things in the sport.
In recent years when he struggles though it seems like one leg does not move as much as the other.

I only saw that in the Tour which I assumed had to do with his swollen knee.

He will never win the Tour again because he won't be there.

That would be awesome (for the Giro and Vuelta), but no chance the ASO risks such a dent in the Tour's preeminence.
