Apparently Oman has some 2,000m climbs, but at this time of the year the peloton doesn't want to be doing that sort of climbing. Interesting that there is an ITT on the final stage, the smart money would have to be on Spartacus.

Well, Yemen doesn't have any money, it is the poorest gulf country to begin with.

You can drink in Oman, Qatar and Yemen.

These countries are not democracies, but to be honest I don't think it would work in these countries... after all look at how well its working in Afghanistan and Iraq...

Money is an issue for sure (4 000 000 Euro and you can have a race anywhere I guess).

Yemen is totally lawless with very poor infrastructure they are a good 20 years behind the rest of the world.

If you were going to make a tour de gulf I would guess it would go to Saudi or the UAE, they have money after all.

Yes Oman has a few mountains that go over 2000m (over 2000 of climbing at an average of 10%+ Max 20%) as I said before too tough for this time of year.

Oman is a pretty spot and one of the reasons they are having the race here is to promote tourism. Hopefully the powers that be will continue to have the race after this year and promote cycling here.

I'll put up pics from today's crit

I do have slight issues with a race in a country where women are still given no rights, and they have the death penalty

although on that basis i guess the ToC falls in the same catagory

FYI the women do have rights in Oman and are part of the government. It is true however that they are not treated equally. I am opposed to the death penalty as well but as you pointed out this is not the only place in the world with capital punishment.

So HEKTOREN issues forth a three hundred words of engaging, fairly provocative socio-political diatribe, yet nobody is moved to respond; but an off hand allusion to the "PROFIT" Mohammed draws return fire? I'm (relatively) new in town and still trying to figure out the rules of engagement, such as they are, so forgive me for asking silly questions: I don't want to be called a Troll, again, for violating the social mores.

A bigot posts a rant about arabs, swiss, and every other creed and ethnicity he dislikes in a racing thread. It has nothing to do with racing. No takes the bait. Boo hoo.

I got one line into hektorens post and decided it was far too much to read..

Hektoran still has a lot to learn, if you want to rant or troll its best to keep it down to two lines.

Has the race actually bloody started yet.. there is complete confusion

was meant to start 2pm gmt, but at 3pm steven de johng was still twittering pictures of fireworks. The oman twitter said at 3pm that the opening ceremony had just started.

And all im getting on oman tv is the ministry of information.. which omany channel is it on?

ok.. see that its started..
any news would be well received, even the guys at sky are in the dark..

6 in break away but it as it is under lights it is impossible to see numbers and jerseys are even hard with the quality of the image. There is at least once Cervello and BMC . I heard Cameron Myer mentioned but my arabic is hopeless so it could have been aout anything.

Looks like they are about caught in anycase.
