Has Merricks "dropped Lance"?

From the emails it is obvious he is trying to keep clear water between him and "the situation". He makes very accurate statements too, obviously aware that it will all be on the record now, and picked over soon too.

It looks to me like he has decided that he won't be singing in tune with any of the camps now, probably having realized that whatever the fall-out is, that his race won't have tied itself to the downfall of any of the named riders that are still star participants.

If one was obviously lying, and the other obviously not, and the one(s) being smeared was/were arguably the assets that are the engine behind your very survival, keeping a safe distance is an interesting pick as "the best/wise thing to do under the circumstances".

When I first heard Armstrong talk about revealing these emails, I had an image of crazy Floyd talking crap. I guess I had bought into the rumours about drunk, wild, broke a$$ Floyd. These emails... I cannot believe they released them with such fanfare. I am sincerely trying to look at them objectively and I cannot find anything that supports the theory of angry, mentally unstable Floyd blackmailing his rich former associate. This struck me as a guy trying to put his career back together and trying to use his fame to help his current team get in a big domestic race. The emails to Armstrong were calm and rational, anything but crazy. If that's the best spin Radiofarce can put on this, well they've truly lost their touch and/or their influence.

On the highlighted above - we all did as this is what Bruyneel had told the NYT the day before:

Bruyneel, who was also implicated in the e-mail messages, said Landis had asked him “for money, basically a lot of money” and a job on the team in exchange for his silence.

He added that Landis was looking for money to pay legal bills that were accumulating after he tested positive at the Tour de France. “Threatened, blackmailed, whatever you want to call it,” Bruyneel said.

When asked if he contacted the police about the threats, Bruyneel said no. He said that Landis had a volatile personality and that he should “seek professional help, and by that I don’t mean lawyers.”

This is Lances testing history from 1999 to 2004, as published in L'Equipe in 2005 - these numbers are the total number for each year, not just the TdF.

1999: 15 urine tests
2000: 12 urine tests
2001: 10 urine tests
2002: 9 urine tests
2003: 9 urine tests including the search for HES,
2004: 8 urine tests and 1 blood test for the detection of hemoglobin synthesis
.

UCI controls from 1999 to 2004 in total = 63. or 10.5 per year.

Thanks for that. I knew that 'the most tested athlete' claims were as plausible as the idea of using a portfolio of Enron and Bre-X stock to retire at the age of 50 , I just didn't know the exact numbers.

I'm actually reeling that a mainstream newspaper hasn't just parroted the shack press release. The NYT checked whether the information from radioshack really did back up what LA and JB said and then reported on the difference. Can't rely on the old nobody-will-bother-checking MO anymore lads.

Much more of this and Flandis wont be the only one with a public credibility problem.... and we can all focus on the credibility of his allegations.

Feeling pretty vindicated about my comments in this thread after the article. Its gonna be great when the herpes-troll returns, he can apologise for his ad hominems then

Also, can anyone enlighten me as to the original source of the Messick quote that publicus posted?

I'm wondering if the Radioshack people are just really naive about cycling and believe all the BS that LA/JB have told them, told the minions to release the emails thinking they backed up JB and shot themselves in the foot. Or is it me that's naive - probably the latter.

I guess because they got away with promoting their message and having it repeated without much scrutiny in the main stream media before, they thought they could continue to do so.

An example would be the Catlin "total transparency" that didn't happen. Another would be yesterday's press conference, whith statements to the effect that they were happy to answer questions .....but then they explained they didn't think it was worth going into specifics......

In fact, they seem to have got away without much scrutiny so many times I suspected they were going to do so yet again. Now I'm beginning to hope that the LA chapter really will get closed.

It would be interesting to hear the real reason Catlin was let go, and what kind of financial kickback he received to just go away.

Duffy is still with the team, except now that call him "Chef" Duffy because he puts the cereal on the table in the morning.

Why would you think he got any kind of bribe? LA promises to work with him, but then didn't. What would he do to stop that which didn't just make him sound bitter that he didn't get the job?
