Attention: 'Orgullo Paisa y Colombia es Pasión–Café de Col.' in Giro-Tour-Vuelta 2011

Historic Moment Colombia
.

For those that understand a little Spanish > the announcement from the big boss Luis Alfredo Ramos Botero on National
TV last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8sPsIGm25o&feature=player_embedded

Medellin Monday, 13 September 2010.
Colombia in 2011, will have a team with the best national riders to represent us in the great races of Europe, said the governor of Antioquia, Luis Alfredo Ramos, who showed up out of the blue, at last stage ceremony of the XVI Vuelta Nacional Marco Fidel Suárez (BabyRCN) Sept 8-12.
The governor was there to congratulate and thank the mayor from Bello for the good care of his team Indeportes Governor Antioquia-Orgullo Paise.

**The governor is in talks with Ignacio Vélez, president of Colombia es Passion team-Café de Colombia-4/72, both with the firm intention of creating an independent Professional Continental team from the riders combined we have now, bringing together the best riders of the two teams to work together and get the invitation to the big three, Giro, Tour and Vuelta.

The governor also mentioned in the proposal the team of UNE-EPM telecom.

UNE-EPM technical director Raul Mesa said we will not leave our top riders sit on the sideline cause the UCI regulations doesn't allow to race with different teams registered within the UCI (International Cycling Union), Colombia es Passion-Café de Colombia-4/72 and UNE-EPM are registered as continental teams and are in the process of getting that entry also for 2011.

Both teams Colombia es Passon and UNE-EPM now have to see if they can find a way to keep the continental teams at flow, together with the riders from Indeportes Governor Antioquia-Orgullo Paise that will not intergrate in the new entity, to do the races in Colombia and UCI America Tour, while at the same time it's managers would sacrifice their best riders to integrate only in the new Professional Continental team to run internationally the whole calender of the Pro Tour.

! {So it's a 3 party merger to set up a PCT or PT powerhouse with the 30 top notch volunteer riders, attached 2 continental branches with the Crème de la Crème of riders batteling the IAT and domestic agenda.} WoW

So let me get this right, three teams are merging/putting forward their best riders and staff to form a single columbian team that is applying for a pro-conti licence for next year? while retaining the three teams to compete domestically..

basically this is the making of a Colombian based team in europe, probably pt?
good news, will be hard work getting invites to the GTs, but let them make their statement on the road.

Fantastic news. Really hope they get a shot at the tour at least (would make it a lot less boring). ALthough I think the Giro and the Vuelta would be more suited to this team

After so many deceiving teams entering some GTs last years I think they will not have so many problems to make 2 or even the 3 GTs in 2011. It is on the interest of everyone also, Colombia could add upp even more than now to international cycling. The country is also doing well economically, it would also be smart from the bussines perspective in the long term.

As for the pure cycling...great:)

I'm not sure they can make it for 2011 but if they get a proper pro-conti team and get a chance to ride regularly in Europe they'll get invites (or at least they should, if they're anything like every other Colombian team ever).

If they get to shine at the Tour again this might be a sign that things have changed for the better (and I'm not talking about Colombia's economy here, it's Clinic stuff).

To be honest I think they struggle, at least the first year, or probably the first few years. I think this mainly due to a difference in the manner the peloton behaves. They'll probably would need to adjust to it. But I could also be completely wrong, to be honest I hope I am wrong

From what i read, Columbian cyclists dont have quite the same ethical standards as European cyclists. It would be so funny if the malia rosa/ jaune/ roja crashed/ had a puncture and Columbia Passion or whatever suddenly start hammering the pace:D

I'm sooo looking forward to this. That this colombian team totally messes up all these crappy ethics that are getting out of control more and more in Europe.

Anyways great news this is! DAOTEC once again provides us with some good Colombian cycling information.

Ah, excellent news. Hopefully they'll get one or 2 invites if they get it off the ground in time. Bringing slightly unstable dynamite to the party is one sure way to inject a bit of bang. It's the Tour's mountain stages that could really do with it, but I guess the Vuelta would be their first real GT shot. I hope.

These riders are more suited for the Tour-Vuelta combo. Just based on weather conditions. But getting an invite into the Tour could be tough. Maybe they'll get it if the Tour organization goes for the diversity peloton that Hinault was talking about. I think it helps that Hinault experienced first hand riding against these Colombians in the 80's. He saw some of them riding away from him. I some cases helping him.

I would laugh my **** off if everybody says that they are not Tour material and in the first mountain stage out of 10 riders on the final climb half of them are Colombians. :DThat would be crazy. (Just dreaming).

Something like this happened in the Dauphine Libere in 1984. A Colombian team (Leche La Gran Via) received a last minute invitation to ride the Dauphine. The team travels to Europe, but have no shirts to wear (They were amateurs). So they pulled some shirts out of somewhere and start riding. First mountain stage there was like 4 Colombians among 8 riders. After more climbing it was more like Greg Lemond, Hinault against the same 4 Colombians. That was the Story for the rest of the Dauphine. Towards the end the cold weather killed the Colombians but at the end Martin Ramirez finally won. Of course it was easy for them to perform in a 1 week race as compared to a 3 week race which they found out later that year.:)

So is Henao going to podium/ win a gt or will he struggle in europe?

henao right now in the mountains I would estimate him on the level of anton, no kidding

orgullo paisa would be a team that would struggle least in Europe as they are the most "european" team in colombia. they have bigger riders and more itt specialists and allrounders generally speaking.

this is what happened last year in vuelta colombia. duarte in leaders jersye had a flat tire with 80 km to go in a flat stage! 7 teams started racing like maniacs. with over 50 km/h until the finish. rudy pevenage said after that race he couldn't believe what he saw

duarte's team dropped back and started chasing like manicas but to no avail, duarte went so deep in the chase het got sick and even had to abondon a few days later. it was mayhem!!

this is also what I can't wait to see in europe away with those damn asskissing schlecks and contador. it's pathetic. these guys race with their hard with passion and with one goal to win.

Great news, but I am under the impression that they are going to have Sevilla as team leader for stage racing, why not Henao or Duarte?

Henao is 22 if I recall correctly, so plenty of time for become a team leader, and in the meantime learn from guys with more experience like Sevilla.

Might give Berto something to think about heh? I saw Santiago Botero ride a 4.38 pursuit in Medellin in 1994 on a concrete track, before he came to Europe. I think there'll be plenty more talent like that we have yet to see. Can't wait to see what happens. Schlecks and co. wont be pratting about track standing on the mountain when theres a Colombian (or three) 10 minutes up the road!
