Need to post the forum stats, that will tell you what happened, we must of hit a new high for members online and trying to post in the race thread, right after Froome won the 404's started :D A sign of an epic stage.

Your application stack looks like this:

nginx cache<-->forum software on http server <--> database stack.

I know the nginx cache was good, it was either the http server running out of resources, or something about a database failure.

My guess is it was the database backend running out of resources as it could not handle the thundering herd of inserts/updates caused by Froome's ridiculous performance.

I'd be interested to know if I'm close. PM me if you guys don't want to post it publicly. I don't know why you would want to hide it because it isn't that important.

Because they don't draw their information from a very large database on the site server.

Basically no reply here means you're right :)

As per script, the mods will say they know nothing even if it was a downed server or someone accidentally pulled a plug. Some things are way too predictable :D

Why would the mods know anything?

Well most forums allow mod/admins to view the error logs or error tab in the admin panel, its all there in black and white.

On the other hand, this forum either blocks you all from viewing any of that or its mums the word on the error log.

Also, is there a way that the forums could be upgraded to a more recent vbulletin? Version 4.2?

This is "old" technology

Thank you for considering...

You may want to hold off on the " thank you's" until they actually, do, "consider."

On another note: How's your stock of perishable foods?

It's a Saturday too. I'm not very communicative during weekend outages either.

To answer another question, unless it's a bug fix, upgrades generally aren't faster than the app they replaced. This would be a hardware bottleneck. Perhaps reindexing the tables might help. Logs better be written to another disk.

Beyond some simpler things, the path to handling greater load when Froome is let off the chain may not be that easy.

"I'm a doctor, Jim, not a programming specialist!"

which is my way of saying that error logs and error tabs and error whatnots mean absolutely nothing to me..... I will have UK editoral staff contact the Techies again this morning.

Most likely the server's http ports got maxed out and as you probably know apache gets into a weird state when it runs out of resources. Once someone got the nagios page, they acted on it. We didn't lose any posts so they either restarted apache or rebooted. Who knows what state the server/services are in (up to date or not), again I doubt anyone who is on here actually knows anything or will be told, its not like the end of the world or if we're paying to use it so it falls off the end of the bit bucket.

That's exactly what I said, why do you feel the need to belittle yourself?
