Voted Benoot.

I thought about only including first year pro's but in the end went with the official definition. I don't know why the poll doesn't work by the way

Fixed, see here.

Cheers.

For me a neo pro is only a first year, the others have a neo contract but arent neo pro's I think.

Benoot wins it pretty easy for me being able to compete in the cobbled classic in your first year at that age is impressive. Besides that he showed his diversity in the Dauphine, CSS, Montreal etc. Really impressive!

Yes, that's a stupid definition, maybe people use it because most riders still have a neo pro contract in their second year as a pro, but it's a strange definition.
People are using that definition because it's the official one used by the UCI. Yes, it's silly, but then again, it's the only way to have this thread be meaningful at all. Otherwise you could argue that riders who are on Conti teams and take part in 1.1 and 2.1 races are very much professional cyclists.

Fact is, the lines are highly blurred.

Is the official definition that you are on a neo-pro contract, or that you are in your first two seasons at WT or PCT level, ie eligible to be on a neo-pro contract?

Are riders who sign improved contracts after one year still "neo-pros" in their second?

Benoot by a margin, I don't consider second year pros as a neo pro. Latour showed a lot of potential as did Ewan. But Tiij battled with the big guys in the some major races

Alaphillipe, Yates A, Yates S and Bonifazio are not neo pros.

You might want to read the rest of the thread before you post something like this

Anyway, voted Benoot. Really impressive in some of the toughest races of the year, very exciting talent for the future. Alaphilippe was incredible in LBL though, so he is a close second.

Tiesj Benoot for me, he has shown great diversity, and although Alaphilippe's Ardennes performances are hugely impressive, the fact he's a first year makes his performances all the more impressive. He has also been a lot more consistent throughout the year. He performed well in the majority of the races he entered, while Alaphilippe has been more irrelugar.
Looking at their standout performances though, the question would be: what is more impressive: 2nd in Liège in your second year or 5th in Flanders in your first year?

Benoot. As I don't consider the Yates, Alaphilipe etc to be truly neo-pro, although they are on their first 2 year professional contract

Benoot seems to be the king of breaking away from the chasing group: he did it in Flanders to end 5th, in Montreal to end 5th, now again in Paris-Tours to end 4th. Quite remarkable. By the way: procyclingstats says he's 1m90 tall, is that correct? Wouldn't have guessed this.

I like Gougeard, he has been getting great results for two seasons now, he has won a GT stage, an overall race and one day classics.

I hope in 3-4 years he is ready to win a race like Paris-Roubaix. He has the engine for that.

I would consider's Benoot's acheivements more impressive than Alaphillipe's when you consider he's in his first year as a pro, instead of 2nd.

No, you're technically a neo-pro for the first two years :)

The uci/cpa/aigcp definition of a "new professional" is indeed a rider in his first two full pro seasons, a full season being one that started before July 1. See http://www.uci.ch/mm/Document/News/Rulesandregulation/16/26/52/JointAgreements2013-ENG_English.pdf

"Neopro" however, is not an official term but a colloquial expression that has been around much longer than the uci regulations about new professionals, and I have never encountered it as a reference to something other than first year pro's.
Here is a nice definition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBcOHBw-IbA

Still, though, the OP is clearly using a definition where "neo-pro"="new professional". It'd be nice if people respected that instead of skewing the poll results.

Well, a neo pro is per definition a rider in his first professional contract, which makes it the first two years. Maybe the question should be rephrased so that only first year professionals are eligible?

Amongst first year pros it's easily Benoot for me with Lopez second and Ewan third. I think Küng could have challenged Benoot if he hadn't crashed in the Giro, he was going really well in the spring.

I thought you were a neo-pro for the duration of your first contract.

Which makes it two years for almost any neo pro since professional teams are not allowed to sign 1 year deals with non professional riders.
