At least you're consistent...

And again someone starting about Gilbert even though it doesn't have anything to do with the discussion.

.
You brought it in when you said Gilbert was miles better than Boonen but that Valverde was miles worse than The great one and that he was a 2nd tier x x and x
Here's another news flash for the Valverde fans who like to thrash on Gilbert, he's banned for a reason: his dog doped.

/QUOTE]

You say this on the day it was revelead Vino and Gilbert are best friends and Gilbert might move in with vino? :p

Anyone saying Gilbert hasn't made progress since 2008 is the only blind fool here[
Who said that?

On a related note I imagine this thread will get shut down (or seriously culled) when a mod catches wind of where this discussion has headed. Shame.

Since i created the thread, i would like to say that i think the gilbert vs Contador vs Valverde banter (at a decent level, no otts from what ive seen), is better than the list of names that not too many seemed to be posting anyway.

In 2008 Valverde was obviously better. But we're 3 years later now.

Valverde will always be the better overall cyclist since he can win stage races and GTs. But Gilbert can certainly rival Valverde in the classics these days ;)

2010 Liege Bastogne Liege

1 Alexander Vinokourov
2 Alexander Kolobnev
3 Alexander Valverde

4 Gilbert

Oh and i think those of us who picked danny boy over niki boy may have been somewhat justfied today anyway (looking at roches performance there)

True :) But I do think if Deignan, Roche and Martin were all in top form I dont much would separate them in a grand tour..Hopefully some great days ahead for Irish cycling, some good young riders coming through as well :)

Spain -> Egoitz Murgoitio
Italy -> Enrico Franzoi
Portugal -> Tiago
France -> Arnaud Jouffroy
Netherlands -> Niki Terpstra (or Lars van der Haar OK )
Switzerland -> Christian Heule
Belgium -> Kevin Pauwels (I'll pick Gilbert over Boonen, Contador and ValvPiti any day !)
Germany -> Philip Walsleben
Sweden-> Thomas Löfkvist
UK ---------> Ian Field (Massive failure, anyone voting for Cav, which means anyone who voted)
Russia -> Menchov by default
USA -> Jonathan Page (Massive failure, anyone voting for Farrar, which means anyone who voted)
Slovakia-> Sagan (come back to cross, Pete ! :))
New Zeland-> Sergent
Australia-> Wes Sulzberger
Norway-> EBH
Denmark -> Matti Breschel
Ireland -> Roche
Kazakhstan -> Iglinskiy (Vino? Veritas?)
Canada -> Craig Richey
Czech Republic-> Stybar of course.

OK it was rather your favourite per country and very high on cyclocross. :p

Edit: And of course, in Luxemburg, Jempi Drucker is better than Andy, Fränk and Kim combined !

:D

Only problem is Cross isn't proper cycling. ;)

Let's see if Deignan beats Martin's time on Zoncolan then :p

(Although not exactly a fair comparison given the relative difficulty of 2011's stage).

Oh please, as if Gilbert cared whether he finished third or fourth. He did a suicide attack in the hopes of still winning the thing and it failed. Obvious he wouldn't catch a Vino and Kolobnev working together and it isn't that surprising that Valverde working together with Cuddles could catch Gilbert.

You're not going to tell me that you think Valverde was stronger than Gilbert at LBL 2010.

Winning LBL is a combination of being very strong, timing your attacks to perfection and luck. If he rides a less aggressive race he will definitely win LBL this year.

yeah I think the stage this year is a monster, I'll make a prediction that Deignan will finish between 10th-15th on that stage..But I suppose it depends if he's working for Machado or not at that stage of the race..

Clen scandal or not, but how can anyone not put Contador down as the best rider in Spain? At his best he time trials like Cancellara and climbs like Pantani.

As a cyclist, he's like a combination of Nadal and Ronaldo.
