Like I said in the Transfers thread a few weeks ago: Philipsen is lowkey stepping up. Very good win.

Shame that kinda silly crash has such consequences. Doesn't look good for a couple of riders.

Ackermann is super fast but he doesn’t make reliably good split second decisions. He was in quite a similar situation to Bennett on the Champs Elysee at risk of ending up in the wind too soon with his lead out starting to fade and Stuyven leading Pedersen past him.

Bennett let both come by and took Pedersen’s wheel. Ackermann immediately grabbed for Stuyven’s wheel, something Pedersen was happy to let him do because Pedersen is smart. Stuyven then starts to slow and Ackermann has no choice left but to go too early. By the time he’s at the line he is visibly dying.

Philipsen is very maneuverable and technical. It's why he was never a good fit as a leadout for Kristoff because the latter often couldn't follow him. But up until now, Philipsen always seemed to lack pure speed and got a massive amount of top 10 finishes, with very few victories. Maybe he just came into the wind too soon in the past. Today he came very late and he beat to strong guys, who might have started too early

Interesting about the lead out part. I suppose it’s not much use being great at moving through the peloton if you keep leaving your sprinter behind.

It was very nicely done, slipped through gaps the instant they opened, got up to top speed before hitting the wind, had the strength to hold high speed once he did hit it. Pretty encouraging for the guy. You could see he was very very pleased with the win

Naesen didn't look injuried and he seemed in good spirit when pushed over the finish line by De Bondt. Perhaps his shoe or pedal was just broken?

The speed with which the one Michelton guy coming from way behind is crashing into/over the other who's already lying halfway in the ditch is pretty insane.

Movistar's updates on injuries to their riders caught up in the crash are Lluis Mas has possibly injured ribs (at least bruised) and Roelandts has scrapes and bruised hip. Everyone else is uninjured. Granted the team likely wasn't exactly going to be doing anything of interest and likely was going to be virtually invisible anyway.

He was "lucky". If he hadn't crash over his teammate, he probably would have gone straight into that brick wall.

Philipsen's win was the 30th of the season for UAE. Deceuninck have 35 but it's a long time since another team have been this close.

Last year? Iirc Astana or Bora were neck and neck with DQT for a long time, first part of 2019.

Okay, that's probably true. But not five and a half weeks from the end of the season.

And of course Mitchelton or CCC/BMC always get the lead in January, but that wasn't really my point (even if I probably didn't elaborate adequately).
