BMC's Gilbert seemingly having to be held back from attacking a child today on stage 18:

Tensions are obviously high in an unhappy BMC camp. The GC defence has come to nothing and whilst domestiques like Hincapie may be happy wasting an entire tour riding for an ailing Cadel but it must be irritating to the more ambitious Gilbert.

His anger outburst has more to do with potentially missing the Olympics than anything else.

Honestly, I think I'd have taken at least a few punches at the guy in the tan hat had I been Gilbert. So I'd say he was restrained for sure. People are idiots for bring their dogs unleashed to a bike race.

TJVG is kind of saving their season though. Most people said he was a waste of money and it definitely looked that way for a long time. His main season goal was ToC where he only managed 4th despite a very strong ITT. After a weak Dauphine where he wasn't even close to the best uphill I thought he'd be nowhere in the TDF. It sure seemed like that in the start as well - in the first MTF, he was 46th, and on the hilly stage 10 he was dropped by a peloton of 40 or so.

Then suddenly his GC captain started collapsing while simultaneously TJVG started climbing a whole lot better. For the first time this season he was consistently climbing with the best (or at least the second best). Now he'll win the white jersey and almost certainly finish in the top 5 in TDF.

Who would've thought that after his 46th place on Planche des Belles Filles?

Agreed. I ain't punching him. Dude has an enormous black dog without a leash that is willing to run out in front of speeding cyclists.

And a cranky-looking wife. I'd keep my distance.

We keep hearing that Gilbert is coming good but I have not seen anything in the past few weeks to indicate that. He won't win the Olympic road race and has not managed one of his trademark devastating attacks all season. Not sure if BMC can retrieve their season now but they can come back strong next year. Only Evans or TJVG can pull something out of the fire for them for the rest of the season. Gilbert is just not the same rider he was last year while Ballan had a good spring without getting the big win. From the DS' recent comments they are looking for more riders which probably means some will be going as well. The only safe ones would be the above mentioned four riders and probably Quinziato, Burghardt, Phinney, Frank and GVA and maybe Tschopp who should have ridden the Tour instead of the Giro. The rest are pretty anonomous even for domestiques.

I heard daniel oss is coming to BMC. I think most of them would be safe except for guys like yannick, roe, bookwalter.

I'd have attacked the girl as I'm bigger than her.

Number one rule about being a tough guy: Always pick your mark carefully ;)

@LeviLeipheimer
US Cycling has another decade to cheer for a true TdF contender thanks to Tejay. This is the beginning of his career. Congrats Tejay

So guys, if you were BMC
What do you do with Cadel?
Has he another Tour on his legs?

They don't have to decide right this minute. They've got some time to figure out the best plan of attack for next year.

They should do what they did this year but if Evans loses unexpected amounts of time early in the race I think they will be obliged to shift the focus to TJVG asap. When Evans is riding well he does not lose much time in the first half of the race. When he does he tends to slide further down the GC. That's supposing of course that TJVG will also have the same form next year !

Bookwalter did well in the Tour last year in a support role. Probably unlucky not to be included this year.

Oss will the replacement for Hincapie I believe. they are pretty similiar riders.

who will Syzmd replace?

Szmyd has not been confirmed right?
I hope BMC does not buy him, he really has very few good years left in him.
BMC only have 26 riders, the max is 30 I think.
So he does not really have to replace anybody. BMC still have space for some riders.

He has done nothing since 2010 Giro. He used to be a great domestique. Maybe illness ? Oss is not a bad buy, strong rider for the classics for Gilbert and Ballan.

Oss is a fantastic lead-out man for Sagan and Viviani. If they're really buying him then I suspect they're buying somebody faster for him to look after.
