Boogerd claims Camenzind owes him for 1998 Lombardia win

Maybe its just me but there's no way I'd give away a Lombardia win for 40,000 Francs. Isn't winning the big races supposed to be what being a pro is all about? Isnt this what they dreamt about doing growing up, or is all just about the money?

I think that 40000 were not meant to be a price for letting the other win, but rather a sort of consolation money for working in the break. It is meant as some sort of guarantee of not having your effort go for nothing in case you lose.

Working together till the finish and the winner pays the loser is not cheating in my eyes. It's a fair tactic that benefits both parties.

Giving someone money and asking him to lose is not acceptable however.

Indeed.

Boogerd is getting more annoying and irrelevant every year, BTW. Maybe he needs the money for alimentation.

I don't know who's saying the truth (I might be a bit biased here :D) but I think it's hilarious that Boogerd went public with this. It makes him look so bad I'm thinking it must be true.

what a pathetic crybaby boogerd is.

I don't like to say it, but basically this. Since he stopped racing Boogerd is trying very hard to stay relevant. It might be a true story, but he should just realize his time is long gone.

sometimes, i really think that this sport is a joke. if this guy (boogert) is admitting the deal - he should be punished and stripped from all wins as a result of unsportive behavior.
what a farse :(
What's the farce, exactly?

What's he trying to do with a tightwad Swiss?!

Vino, the State of Kazakhstan etc., looks more reliable with payouts. Uran been counting some cash, or maybe gold, recently? :p

(sorry)
- two riders are fighting for the victory, fans are exited in front of TV and the riders just dealing of letting the other one win... it happend a lot of times. even at grand tours.

Except the riders are still fighting for the win in Boogerd's example. The loser just gets some money for working in the break so the other one actually has a chance of winning. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with that.

Like allready pointed out above. It's common use in cycling that if there are 2 guys in the break the winner will pay an amount to the loser. Only to make sure both will ride all out till the finish. Ofcourse it doesn't always happen, but a lot.

I got a question for the Dutch posters. How is Boogerd perceived now in the Netherlands? What do people think of him?

Whenever a doping case is unveiled, whenever riders smoke a great stage, or whenever the Vuelta announces its parcours I wonder why I still follow cycling.

Then some news like this come up and I suddenly remember.

Luckily as a Swiss I have now clue what tightwad stands for.
Ösi was and still is a very nice guy. Back in his prior job as postman.

Even if it's true, it's ridicolous for Boogie to make it public. Maybe he wants just that other riders will also say "He's done a lot for cycling" when being questioned :D

As the best dutch rider from 1997 until he quited.
Also as someone who rarely managed to win. He's quite populair, but it seems he needs media attention though.
He also sometimes co-commentates during the more important mountain stages or classics and I must say he's an added value, but that's mostly because he can correct the other 2.
